Schedule updates have been very light on new routes and with all the chops they have made to the schedule (not that they are the only one chopping) there isn't much to get excited about.

I have high hopes for the end of June extension? I mean they should be staffed by the end of year.

It’s hard for me to get excited by anything in an extension when they just keep chopping them later. Even if something shows up in it, they might get rid of it before you get there.

Yeah your right one could hope we ever actually see good news anymore from WN they like to disappoint these days.

It's not that WN "likes" to disappoint as much as they would like for 737-7 deliveries to get on track. They're still in the process of rebuilding depth after the frequency trims thanks to Covid. New adds will just have to trickle in at their own pace.

Two years in a row Southwest has canceled my non-stop on vacation and replaced it with connections. This year was even worse as they had nothing available on my departure date. Told me to fly the day before or day after...

WN was facing aircraft shortages due to the MAX grounding before COVID-19. Then COVID hit and caused unprecedented challenges to the airline industry, including staff shortages and supply chain issues.

Now, WN wants to rebuild their network but are facing staff shortages among other problems I’m no expert at disclosing. They’re doing the best they can.

The strength of SW for this infrequent flyer was a lack of hassle, along with halfway decent comfort and service. I am gathering from this thread SW is having difficulties maintaining that.

Interesting that they are promoting this as “restoring their network” when all they’re doing is redeploying capacity.

Meanwhile, F9 and NK are eating away their peace of the pie in Florida.

They fail to mention all the cuts.

I really thought they would cut back intra cali flying not add to it.

Guess it is good those 16 new gates at DEN have been delayed from original plans.

There are some stations such as BOI, MDW, CVG, DAL, DEN, GRR, GSP, HOU, LAS, SDF, MEM, OMA, MCO, PHX, SLC, and TPA that have enough demand for more WN flights than is currently scheduled for Summer 2022, but most of these stations are seeing some cuts on WN due to the fleet shortages, staffing shortages, and operational issues that WN is currently facing.

My only insight is from DAL and DEN to Chicago. Normally there are lower fares available closer to departure date at ORD vs MDW. That seems to tell me thatt ORD is not doing as well AS MDW -- at least for routes I listed.

My only insight is from DAL and DEN to Chicago. Normally there are lower fares available closer to departure date at ORD vs MDW. That seems to tell me thatt ORD is not doing as well AS MDW -- at least for routes I listed.

The Florida Panhandle and Hawaii had stronger demand for WN service in January 2022 than in January 2020, whereas the other markets that had WN service in January 2020 had weaker demand for WN service in January 2022 than in January 2022.

Station load factors on WN at most of the stations that had WN service in January 2020 were below January 2020 levels in January 2022.

Side note, but that LinkedIn source is good for weekly route news. I used to get it from enilria's thread here, then Crankyflier's Monday blog posts (rip Skeds of Air Lines). Now I'm using this.

Sad that the linkedin doesnt do international updates

Does the tabulations you quote actually add Manchester NH, MHT Providence, RI PVD in with Boston as one city or are you adding them together yourself? They are in the same region of the country and they overlap but not co-terminals or anything like one destination the way a SFO and OAK are.

1Q22 earnings are out. Loss of $278 million.

Options exercises and -7 conversions mean 81 -8s to be delivered this year, and 21 -7s.

I added up the number of passengers and number of seats from BOS, MHT, and PVD to come up with the numbers for Greater Boston (even though I had also mentioned the numbers for each station separately).

The DOT Consumer Airfare Report also treats MHT and PVD as part of the Boston market in addition to BOS.

Let's hope that they do add more routes to restore their network as they mention in the earnings call. We have not seen that yet.

Was talking to a pilot the other day he said they had a class of 30 pilots committed to show up and only 10 showed up. They have multiple offers from other airlines and going with the best option.

From the earnings call: "DON'T SEE A PATHWAY YET FOR SUPPLY TO GET BACK TO 2019 LEVELS UNTIL MUCH LATER THIS YEAR"

Sounds like potentially positive capacity in Q4 vs 2019, assuming demand, fuel, and staffing are all in order.

I would argue they have been restoring it. Is it fully restored? no. But it is back a fair amount from where it was a year ago.

While I have serious doubts about 2/3 no-showing, it's been happening everywhere; WN isn't alone in this. If you can be domiciled in your preferred city and/or get the chance to fly something that isn't a 737 for equal or more money at DL, UA or AA, wouldn't you take another offer too?

I'm going to say they were thinking of ASMs when they said supply, and not revenues. High fares and load factors may give them 100+% of revenues on a bit lower supply.

I don't think WN is the only carrier that will struggle to get back to 100% supply this CY. DL is still replacing the mass of planes they retired, and on their last earnings call, IIRC, they said they still had a 1-2 year backlog in pilot training (after the large displacement bid with 777 pilots and MD88/MD-90 pilots sequentially bumping all down the chain).

There are some routes out of Texas that WN was originally planning on operating in Summer 2020 that WN hasn't yet resumed or that have been completely dropped by WN, including the following:
AUS-BOS
AUS-PNS
DAL-BOS
DAL-CLE (Sunday-only)
DAL-DTW
DAL-MSP
HOU-AMA
HOU-BOS
HOU-CLT
HOU-LIT
HOU-MKE
HOU-PIT
HOU-PDX
HOU-SEA

Is WN likely to re-add any of the above routes once WN has more staff and more planes? If so, which of the above routes out of AUS/DAL/HOU are likely to get re-added by WN?

Some other WN routes out of DAL/HOU that WN was originally planning on operating on a daily basis in Summer 2020 are seeing suspensions or less-than-daily nonstop service.

If you're looking to streamline and increase the efficiency of an airline, the last thing you would want to do is acquire another one.

This is misinformation, 20/30 in the class are new instructors. The class was always scheduled at 30 pilots. The training/hiring bottleneck right now is due to an instructor shortage.

That presumes you're willing to terminate routes and frequencies of the other carrier, under the presumption that the assets (planes, people, gates, etc.) will be more profitable under WN ownership... after you pay the buyer's premium to the current other carrier market cap, bring them up to WN wage rates, and pay all of the integration costs.

That reads like somebody on Twitter has little experience in business finance, or M&A specifically.

Looks like as of June,

N8619F will be the new Illinois One
N8620H will be the new Tennessee One

Stupid Southwest management paints a leased aircraft (N918WN) in Illinois One colors then terminates the lease and then has to spend money on doing it on another plane. N918WN is now N707VL with Avelo.

This is misinformation, 20/30 in the class are new instructors. The class was always scheduled at 30 pilots. The training/hiring bottleneck right now is due to an instructor shortage.

Your information is false.

I'm sure many will agree with Kelly.

https://www.inc.com/kelly-main/southwes ... fired.html

"As it holds on to doing what has served it in the past, it's failing to serve its customers (and its employees) in the present."

"Even the most brilliant growth strategy will fail a business--and its customers--if it doesn't have the infrastructure required to support growth. Southwest is making the rookie mistake of holding onto what got it to where it is, not realizing that this won't get it to where it wants to be. In return, it is fumbling to deliver the value it sells, leaving customers running into the arms (or in this case, seats) of competitors."

This notes they need 35 flight instructors now and up to 60 to train 1200 more pilots.

And... Alaska is the overall choice. Makes lots of sense outside of Alaska's regional ops.

Helps Hawaii

Helps West Coast particularly PNW.

Gets you into Alaska, kinda like their intra Texas Ops

Gets bunches of Boeing 737s and pilots and FAs and support.

from the call -

Mary Schlangenstein

Right. Okay. And how many flight instructors do you need to add to be fully
staffed?

Andrew Watterson

We're looking somewhere between -- to hit our plan, 35 to 38. To exceed
our plan, a little north of that, say, 50 to 60.

An Alaska merger would be a shame it would ruin such a good product that Alaska has worked so hard for over the last 75+ years.

AS and WN won't merge. WN wouldn't hold on to the intra-Alaska network, nor the E175s.There's no point in even discussing it.

And still WN craps on their second state outside Texas by giving nearly every other state in their network a plane EXCEPT Oklahoma!

Southwest is not going to buy another airline to get more jets. Have you seen the order book?

B737-7 Max firm = 248
B737-8 Max firm = 211
B737 Max options = 183

Staffing the jets and hiring supporting station personnel is the challenge.

Is there anything "firm" about the Max 7, just askin'.

Ordering them and getting them into revenue service seems tricky.
