WN is going to be dropping the following routes in June 2022:
DAL-SDF/MSP
DEN-CLT/RIC
HOU-CVG/DTW/MKE/MSP
TPA-RIC
DCA-JAX
IAD-MCO

WN will also be reducing DEN-CVG/GRR/BDL/JAX/ORF nonstop service to Saturday-only starting on 6/4/2022 and resuming DEN-ALB nonstop service on a Saturday-only basis starting on 6/11/2022.

I would likely expect WN to re-add daily nonstop service to DEN from ALB, CLT, CVG, GRR, BDL, JAX, ORF, and RIC once WN has more planes in its fleet with WN's plans to significantly expand at DEN.

One reason why WN was dropping some routes and reducing some others to Saturday-only in June 2022 is due to the fleet shortages that WN is facing with the delays in getting the 737 MAX 7 into service.

Shrink until the MAX7 gets certified…. Could be in 2023, we have no clue. So, if I had to guess, XNA-TUL 6 times daily

Southwest Airlines flight attendants vote no-confidence VP Flight Ops.
Union claims the company creates a hostile work environment and fails to enforce mask mandate on its pilot group and has created a double standard among workgroups.

A little surprised they aren’t bringing back BOI-MDW. Would think that doesn’t bode all that well for anything east is that.

Yeah those loads were pretty good along with SNA and I had heard that was getting added back this month but it didn’t ? MDW has been brought back twice and hasn’t stayed for some reason even with good loads

WN had made some cuts in the Summer 2022 schedule due to the plane shortage that WN is facing due to the delays in getting the 737 MAX 7 into service.

Hobby is the first five star airport in North America per Skytrax:

While WN is not the only player at HOU they are the biggest by far of course so this news could only help them I presume.

Nice for HOU, but non-av geek Americans don't look at SkyTrax ratings, nor do they pick an origin or connecting airport by amenities. Price and schedule.

They’ve done just fine in MSP, but they certainly don’t mind dropping routes. Down to 21 departures to just 7 cities. Cant support a LAS daily? OAK gone. Now HOU/DAL? Sad for MSP customers because it’s less and less competition.

WN is facing a fleet shortage due to delays in getting the 737 MAX 7 into service, and WN was dropping some routes that had enough demand for nonstop service from its Summer 2022 flight schedules due to the fleet shortages that WN is facing.

MSP can likely support the return of WN MSP-LAS nonstop service with the WN hub at LAS along with the additional connecting opportunities that are now there to FAT, LGB, PSP, SBA, and Hawaii through LAS.

There are also some other adds that could be made by WN out of LAS once WN has more planes in its fleet such as (a) the addition of LAS-CVG/MEM nonstop service, (b) the return of LAS-BHM/FLL/JAX/LIT/ORF/PHL/RDU nonstop service, and (c) the increase of LAS-BUF/CLE/DSM/DTW/SDF/ICT nonstop service back to daily nonstop service.

Maybe a route without three competitors would do better.

How many less planes do they have than summer 2019. You would think with the MAX grounded they wouldn’t be down planes even with the MAX7s not here yet.

WN currently has 17 more planes in service than it did in Summer 2019, with WN currently having 737 planes in service vs. the 720 planes that WN had in service in Summer 2019.

WN also has more nonstop service to Hawaii from the contiguous U.S. than it did in Summer 2019.

WN has also added or resumed service to 18 additional domestic destinations since Fall 2020, including BLI, BZN, ORD, COS, VPS, EUG, FAT, HDN, IAH, JAN, MIA, MTJ, MYR, PSP, SBA, SRQ, SAV, and SYR.

There are also some other stations that have more WN flights in Summer 2022 than in Summer 2019 such as AMA, AUS, DSM, LGB, MAF, PWM, RIC, and ICT.

So there really isn’t the fleet shortage you say. They just choose to fly other routes.

WN has 717 aircraft in service and are adding early delivery 700’s to the fleet slowly but surely—45 are still available at this point in time

The ‘fleet shortage’ stems from redeploying those aircraft to new leisure markets and expanding Hawaii during the uncertainty of 2020-2021. Much of this capacity came from high frequency markets that lacked demand for business travel. WN recognizes they need restore ‘depth’ in the schedule with additional frequencies in those same markets to stave off the competition. But not at the expense of closing any of the new cities or reducing Hawaii flying. The delay in MAX 7 certification is causing a hindrance to this goal, and I think this is why we see WN cutting a lot of BWI transcon service, a reduction of flying in highly competitive and low yielding TPA & FLL, as well as fewer west coast long hauls out of MDW. They simply don’t have all the aircraft that they want and need to accomplish their 2022 goals due to the certification delay of the MAX 7. Otherwise I sincerely do not believe we would have seen the reductions we’ve seen in some of their strongholds.

I took that to mean -700s, because of the "early delivery" and the use of the present tense, as well as the "45 are still available". Happy to be corrected, though.

The “slowly but surely” statement is throwing me off.

Only Seven MAX 7 have been built to date and are either stored or used by Boeing as test aircraft. The FAA has not issued the aircraft type certificate.

Southwest does have ~250 MAX 7 on order with another 250+ options. Delivery dates TBD pending above approval.

Perhaps he was saying two things in one sentence here. Could 45 -700's be available for purchase as they await their fate from other airlines? Some of Delta's -700's just got a new lease on life.

As for the "early delivery" I am guessing that this is all MAX7.

OR

This could mean that WN is taking 45 of the first MAX7 to come off of the assembly line before Westjet starts taking their own deliveries.

WN has about that number of early build -700’s that have been parked since the height of the pandemic that were due some heavy maintenance that could be brought back into active service. I think that’s the 45 -700’s being referred to. I know that management would prefer to retire these frames rather than fly them again, but given the slipping timeline on when the MAX7 will gain certification, it’s looking more and more like those remaining grounded -700’s that were slated for retirement may actually be returned to service until the MAX7’s start to come online.

Only 12 -700s remain in storage. The others have already returned to service or permanently retired.

One would have to know where these 'parked' - not scrapped - examples are in their maintenance cycles. They won't get $$$ checks - WN will pause expansion, instead, because once the maintenance is done the money is sunk and they can't be sure how profitable new routes/frequencies will be.

I'm not sure that many (any?) of the remaining parked 73Gs are the lowest hanging fruit for providing capacity for expansion. It's hard for me to believe that a heavy check on a 73G makes more financial sense than forgoing the sub-optimal yields and fare deficit at a place like ORD.

I know that management would prefer to retire these frames rather than fly them again, but given the slipping timeline on when the MAX7 will gain certification, it’s looking more and more like those remaining grounded -700’s that were slated for retirement may actually be returned to service until the MAX7’s start to come online.

One would have to know where these 'parked' - not scrapped - examples are in their maintenance cycles. They won't get $$$ checks - WN will pause expansion, instead, because once the maintenance is done the money is sunk and they can't be sure how profitable new routes/frequencies will be.

SK is planning on getting rid of its 737-700 and 737-800 planes in the next 2 years, and some of SK's 737NG planes are 10-15 years old.

KL is planning on getting rid of its 10 remaining 737-700 planes this year, and all 10 of these remaining KL 737-700's are less than 14 years old. WN still has many 737-700's remaining that are older than the remaining KL 737-700's in its fleet.

WN might be able to pick up some used 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft from SK and KL if necessary.

WN can also convert some of its 737 MAX 7 orders to 737 MAX 8 orders if necessary.

Sorry for the confusion on the 45 700’s available to WN. I meant the “old” 700 series or the first 700’s delivered in the late 90’s. The registrations are mostly N7XX. This 45 number decreases about every 5-6 days as more and more are returned to service. Last week N770SA returning to service with most going through MIA which currently has 5 being serviced. I am not saying all 45 can or could return to service but none of the 45 have been scrapped or made parts donors and were parked serviceable during the pandemic. They flew to numerous places but the vast majority went to VCV. And they can fly out!

In keeping with the 5-6 days I noted above, N784SW will re-enter service on Wednesday from MIA to BWI.

As noted above, there is not 45 700s in any type of storage. 784 has not been in Mia for 5 to 6 days, and aircraft assignments for Wednesday are not available yet. What if they aren't finished with 784 tomorrow?

I really hope some of this will happen and he also in other articles doesn’t leave out the possibility of a premium product.

Please read what I write before reacting. I did not say 784 had been in Miami for 5-6 days. It has been there over 3 weeks and will go into service on Wednesday. I said that WN is bringing back the old 700’s at a rate of one every 5-6 days. And you are right that there are not 45 737’s in storage as on Wednesday that number falls to 44.

There are currently 3 -700s stored at VCV and 8-700 stored at PAE.

48 -700s are off the Opspec and not returning to service.

Wrong again. You are right about PAE but not VCV. There are 26 at VCV and I am not counting 918 which is a lease return and most likely headed to Avelo where three of her sisters ships ended up. And I am not counting any of the AirTran birds headed to United which are mostly parked at ROS. The balance of the 45 are parked at other airports.

There were 24 700s in temporary storage as of Sept 30 per 3 quarter results with a total fleet of 727 at that time expected to end the year at 728.

WN making more schedule cuts due to COVID & demand? DEN has been running ~75 fewer flights than originally scheduled.

Nashville under the eye of another winter storm watch. Should be another fun time for cancelled SWA flights like last week.

Is there something different about the former AirTran 73Gs that made WN want to offload them, and/or is there some reason UA wants them?
