Keeps getting asked in this thread with no sourced answer but rumor is PW GTF.

Well CALTECH (who seems to be in the know) said they are being RTS=Return to Service and that doesn't sound like parted out.

I am sure he does but of the 20 frames UA bought, 6 have already been parted out—4 in Tupelo and 2 in Marana.

With apologies to CALTECH, another of the ex-WN frames (N7711N) that UA acquired has flown to TUP for part-out.

Actually went out on 7/8 as UA 1973 SFO - ORD. Flight was delayed almost 4 hours. Last minute sub?

Currently on 32, it did have the full bulkhead wall also found on the later MAX 9s, and they did also add USB-C outlets in first class!

Interesting. Just USB C up front?
Purple E+?

No purple E+, back to dark blue like later MAX 8 deliveries,
And only USB-C up front, Economy has USB-A on the IFE screens and the 2 power outlets under the 3 seats.

320 RTS news at LCQ-
N442 good check flight 7Jul, started flying pax on the 9th.
N434 good check flight today, likely flying pax early this week.
N430 check flight scheduled 2688/10Jul. This a/c was previously marked as fleet exit along with N431, which is currently at SAL.
5 320s and 2 319s are still stored.
Will be interesting to see if UA pulls 2 a/c to backfill open slots, or if they start RTS on 319 N842UA which is stored at LCQ.

Just saw that a 78X subbed in on a EWR-JNB turn. I really wonder what the capabilities of that aircraft would be a with a bit more TOW/thrust

It was a last minute swap due to the scheduled 789 going OOS. It was weight restricted to the 789 capacity initially but it looks like they cleared non revs in the end.

The flight there isn't the real issue, taling off from JNB must have been rough.

The 787-10 has the same MTOW as 787-9.
Performance should be similar, unless rotation angle is a problem.

The EWR-JNB leg clocked in at 15:44, so even it would 'pose a problem'. Most people on here seem to think anything over about 12 hours starts to incur weight restrictions, so going nearly 4 hours over this is amazing. It's simply incredible that it flew with all the passengers, including some standby's.

I'd like to know how it performed, the takeoff weight, etc. It really goes to show you how capable the aircraft is.

The return was actually shorter at 15:03, but it has more issues with takeoff as you alluded to at JNB. Again, I'd like to see the 'numbers' for these flights. Great job for the 78X, nonetheless.

You have to factor in the fact that the 787-10 has a 15,000lb higher OEW.

There has been a leadership shake-up at United. Of note, Andrew Nocella, previously head of the hard product (and apparently responsible for United Next), will take over the soft product. Not sure who previously ran that group but I am hopeful this will mean good things.

Flew with all the booked 787-9 passengers a max of 257. Even if you added some lucky non revs, it wouldn't be close to being full in the cabin, which would be 318 seats.

What about the Boom Supersonic jet. Where does that fit in. Suspend reality for the moment - if the plane works out as planned, is it a jet that's deployed from SFO/LAX to Asia or Australia? Or EWR to Europe or South America?

What about the Boom Supersonic jet. Where does that fit in. Suspend reality for the moment - if the plane works out as planned, is it a jet that's deployed from SFO/LAX to Asia or Australia? Or EWR to Europe or South America?

Any place with a lot of wealthy people on the other side of an ocean from a United hub, but within 4250nm of that hub, would be a candidate.

Newark and Dulles to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Zürich, Brussels? Maybe a San Francisco or Los Angeles to Tokyo with a fuel stop in Anchorage? Maybe a San Francisco or Los Angeles to Sydney or Melbourne with fuel stop in Honolulu?

UA mentioned SFO-NRT and EWR-LHR/FRA routes when they signed up for the plane.

Wiki says the 78X has a max payload of 126,300 and MGTOW of 560,000lbs. However, if the tanks are full that gives you 522,373 (empty weight plus fuel), so payload could only be 37,627. That's 188 passengers at 200 lbs. and no cargo.
The 78X thrust per engine is 76k vs 71k, meaning the fuel burn must be higher and the service ceiling is 2,000 feet lower. For it to make it is amazing since the flight was 500 NM longer than the stated range of the 78X.

787-10 range chart has it carrying ~28T around 7,000nm. It is winter right now in JNB which helps performance.
