Ex-Eastern DC-9s And N8990E

Fri Jan 14, 2022 4:34 pm

PlaneTags is selling pieces of ex-EA DC-9-30 N8990E, which got me curious about its history.

https://planetags.com/collections/comme ... e-planetag

Looking at Planespotters, EA had a large number of DC-9s in its fleet when they ceased operations in 1991. While virtually all of them found new homes fairly quickly, most with some combination of TW (whose -50s took a couple years to get to them), Midway, CO, and NW (who would later reunite the ex-Midway DC-9s with the ones they took themselves), N8990E, which was relatively young for a -30, never flew again.

Does anyone know why this particular plane never returned to service with another airline while most of the others did?

I can tell you that the nose section went to the FAA's Non-destructive Test Centre at Albuquerque. I saw it there in 2006 and my database tells me it was still there in early 2016. Current status is unconfirmed.

It still flew nearly 65,000 flights.

True, but I found it strange that most other -9s kept flying and it didn't. Didn't know if there was some backstory as to why it ended up permanently in the desert.
