United today released its fourth quarter and full year 2021 financial results.

For Q4 UA reported an adjusted net loss of $0.5 billion or $1.60/share on operating revenue of $8.2 billion, down 25% compared to fourth quarter 2019.

For the full year 2021, reports an adjusted net loss of $4.5 billion, on $26.4bil in op revenues, down 43% from 2019.

They beat analyst estimates on Q4, but posted wider full-year loss. Stock down a bit in after-hours trading.

Earnings call for more details tomorrow morning

Found the international breakdown interesting. The only bright spot was Latin America which includes all the Mexico and Caribbean beach markets, while Europe and Pacific capacity was down 23.6 and 73.9 percent by Q4.

And wow the already huge debt pile grows, $44.8bil in long-term liabilities up from $40.8bil in 2020.

P&W 777's will start to return this quarter, first time I have heard it would be in Q1.

Yes, debt is something that will be a drag for a long time to come.

But United's could be worse. Delta reported $47.9bil long-term liabilities at end of 2021, though they managed to reduce theirs from $54.5bil at end of 2020 unlike UA which saw its long term debt rise instead in 2021. Let's see how AA does when it reports tomorrow.

Depending on why the debt increased, that may not be a bad thing. One item to note is Delta has a few billion more in short term liabilities than UA, with less overall debt.

Encouraging tidbit from the earnings call this morning:

They expect to be pre-tax profitable in Q2.

Analysts expect Q2&3 to be positive, but back to a loss in Q4. Let's see if they make enough in Q2 + 3 to cover the Q1+4 losses.

Being so internationally and business travel-focused, will be hard to right the ship without those returning strong imo.

Kind of back to the old days, but happy to see the progress over the past two years.

Like many on here, I am hoping we will hear when United will start retro fitting the current planes in service with the new Seatbacks and TV's and Overhead Bins.

They are thankfully coming at a fast pace with our new 737 Max 8 deliveries.

Also when will the E145's start seeing the new interior too?

Hopefully we get some answers in the call!

145 interior refreshes (CommutAir) are underway. A few in service.

A few years too late on the installs for seat back PTV, other than getting the DTV contract out for free.

Really no surprise on these results. Best asset moving forward to recover is cargo. That said, nice marketing skills on a press release.

VERY interested to see what Skywest reports for Q4, and the full year. It will give some guidance for the future, for all of the regionals, I believe.
