Stored Olympic 747 tips on tail due snow in Athens

Wed Jan 26, 2022 6:13 am

Stored Olympic Airways 747-200 SX-OAB managed to tip onto its tail due snow at former Athens Ellinikon Airport.

Why is this ircraft not being scrapped ? It has zero chance of ever flying again and I very much doubt the parts have significant value any more.. meaning it's now nothing more than rusting disused machinery

How much is left of the old terminals at the old ATH airport? Kinda brings a tear to my eye watching her want to fly again. She belongs in the sky :weeping:

They are heavily decayed derelicts. Last pictures I saw the concrete was rusting and everything.

She belongs in the scrapyard, and needs a meeting with some heavy duty cutting equipment. This is not some special case aircraft of special interest deserving a place in a museum... it should be treated like any other end of life aircraft and recycled into Coke cans.
If left in its current state, it gives more justification to the green movement as to why flying should be taxed more heavily

Snowballs disappear at the end of winter and leave no trace.
This useless rust bucket lump of metal needs to do the same

If somebody wants to preserve it without engines why not put some sandbags in the nose?

The re-bar beneath it does, especially with time, and especially if it was badly-done concrete in the first place, where sea-side sand, insufficiently washed, was used in the making. The salt tears up the re-bar, ergo, rust.

Some time before dark yesterday the plane was slowly shifting back to normal as the snow slowly melted. Thankfully it was reported that no damage was obvious. We are anxiously waiting for more updates in the afternoon. You see, to all of us Greek aviation enthusiasts, this plane is our pride and joy...

Yes indeed, Greece is famous for its ancient ruins after all. You can imagine a rampant gang of A.nutters applying this approach to The Parthenon too !

Greece has a long tradition of leaving wrecks rusting. There are a few shipwrecks lying on beaches for example. They actually make for beautiful pictures.

I love the airport still having parked airplanes.
I remember landing there as a kid on a Laker Super One Eleven passing so many parked greek military C-47s on rollout on the coastal side.

There is a plan for a museum to be built on the site to preserve the history of Olympic Airways, but sadly it looks like all the aircraft parked on the ramp have deteriorated too much to be saved. Keep in mind that during the years of the financial crisis there was virtually zero funds available for any kind of aircraft preservation, that's why they appear in such bad shape. Shame.

The problem with the preservation of the three Olympic planes is that the so-called “Investor” (Lamda Development) want the land cleared, the buildings demolished and everybody out. Currently they do not give permission for entrance in the former airport. If they were cooperative we would go very frequently to do preservation work. Sadly, it is beyond our powers.

How does an abandoned aircraft that's been sitting at an disused airport, that's has been barely redevolped for decades, have any correlation with taxing flying.

It's on a brownfield site as the environmental cost of aviation goes it's pretty much a non-factor.

The “Investor” has bribed key persons- to put it diplomatically- but I cannot elaborate as that would be political comment.
By the way, I have just learned from the Cultural Society of Olympic Airways who own the planes that the 747 has settled back to normal position on its own...thankfully!

I see that the Vr is greatly reduceded with frozen precipitation shifting the center of gravity.

Put some sandbags in the front cabin to keep the weighted gravity down. Duh! :banghead: Tell service at old Athens airport to get some old sandbags in the front. It should be no problem.

It’s not abandoned There’s a group who want to preserve it but there are problems with access to the site. I’m not sure why you have such a problem with a group trying to retain some aircraft and airline heritage.

In the video, it looks like the flight deck windows are open on the 727. That can't be good for any future restoration work.

No one seems to take issue with the idea of preservation, but more so see the reality of the situation.

The group may want to preserve the 747, but they haven’t yet and cannot access it for whatever reason. For all intents and purposes that means it’s abandoned. And based on the information available, it will require an absolute fortune to do any such preservation work.

So it’s nice to see that people care, and it’s all fun to say that you want it preserved…but the reality is that it’s a rusting hulk that no one is looking after or making any preventative effort on.

Why should this 747 be preserved ? I don't see anything particularly special about it
Maybe one could chop off just the nose and have a walk-in cockpit as an exhibit of when Onassis owned Olympic and the airline was something impressive in a museum in Greece somewhere... but to preserve an entire 747 is a lot to ask

I don't think anyone here is against aircraft being preserved, but I personally don't think the aircraft at Ellinikon can be classed as 'preserved'; they're abandoned. If they looked like they did when they were in active service, then I'd accept they're preserved. There comes a point where it's almost painful to see them in such a bad state, and if no one's got the money to do anything useful with them, it may be best to 'put them out of their misery'. The land will have to be redeveloped at some point, and I highly doubt a developer will be okay with some old, rotting aircraft sitting on his land.

Maybe they could go into a museum with some old Alitalia and MALEV aircraft, the museum of poorly run European flag carriers.

Then magically the reversers deployed and a ghostly voice was heard inviting passengers to remove their seatbelts. Followed by overhead lockers pinging open whilst an argument blew up amongst the gods as to who was entitled to disembark first... 8-)

Even today? Two of my pals from school, along with three other guys, were arrested in the mid-1970s for plane-spotting at Greek military aerodromes, and they spent some months in jail.

One of the volunteers repainted it by hand a few years ago amazing talent . I was at an open day prior to Covid and the interior is surprisingly good . The interior design was specially selected by Onassis direct from Boeing.

It should be preserved but Greece is not like other nations when it comes to Aviation and care very little about these things. The former employees and enthusiasts have done well to save it up until now.

I doubt it will last another year though sadly . Glad I got to fly on it in the 90's and then see it again.

Ship SX-OAA went to TWA if I remember right. Ship SX-OAB is the one in this story. What happened to the ex SQ birds they bought in the early 80’s after Greece entered the EU? I think there were 2 or 3 of them?
