ANA relaunch AirJapan as medium-haul 787 value carrier

Tue Mar 08, 2022 4:34 am

ANA Holdings is relaunching its AirJapan subsidiary as a value carrier focused on "medium-haul" international route using a fleet of 787-8 aircraft.

Air Japan operated a fleet of 767-300ERs and 787s on behalf of ANA to host of markets pre-pandemic such as China, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Hawaii.

The rebranded airline is scheduled to take flight second half of FY23 with routes TBA.

I wonder if some of the previous markets will simply transition to AirJapan branding, or if ANA will look for entirely new markets for AirJapan?
My understanding was Air Japan with its own AOC and crews allowed ANA to have a lower cost vehicle including with some foreign crews to serve markets that often had higher leisure component for the group.

Wonder what the overlap will be with Peach that is getting A321LRs and can easily cover the Asian "medium" haul markets also?

Sometimes its so confusing what airlines do with all their brands :scratchchin:

That would be my guess as well - basically routes to China/HK/Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines and Hawaii .

That's the thing, they previously didn't do anything with the Air Japan brand, did they? Planes still flew NH routes in NH paint, just with little "Operated by Air Japan" titles, as I understand it.

I suspect the Queensland beach markets (CNS/OOL) may have a slim chance of featuring on the route map. Maybe with assistance of the Tourism bodies on both the Japanese markets (KIX, TYO or whichever the originating market may be) and the Queensland market.

They do have a public face including Air Japan branding at airports which I’ve seen plus a website.

My understanding from ANA's communication in past few years is that, such airlines' main focus would be destinations 4-8 hours away from Japan, unlike ZIPAIR's main focus of intercontential flights (Although nowadays I can't see them flying to Europe according to their hope)

Air Premia aims to offer more comfortable seats with debundled fare, which I am cerain ANA isn't attempting this

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a bigger move than Zip (equivalent). We could see quite a few SE Asian markets that have been operated by Air Japan for years (using ANA branded 787 aircraft) formally shifted over to the new airline. In other words, not just "beach" markets. This will be something to watch closely.

Might mean that the SYD service might move to Air Japan, or ANA could do a Jetstar, and leave SYD with ANA mainline, and have Air Japan service OOL & possibly MEL.

At least it's different to ANA, so in my books, that's a plus.

Will Air Japan replace current ANA routes in Southeast Asia or Asia? I know North America and Europe will still have NH flights.

It's a nice take on ANAs stripe.

What do you call the colours. A flat navy blue, and a pink brown?

They already have dozens of 787s on their AOC.

Royal Jordanian will be very happy with the free publicity they get with the new aiRJapan logo.

I wonder if Air Japan would now be a common sight at CEB, CRK and DVO with NH remaining in MNL? :scratchchin:

Reinforces the airline's LCC nature and retrieves the 783's unfulfilled hope by making the 788 the preeminent 'Regional Jet'. :wink2:

They could easily serve the secondary PH cities with their Peach product. Don't need an AirJapan widebody for such.

Will they use the 335-seat B788s for this operation?

I think they are limiting their LCC narrowbody, at least those previous gen aircraft, to range up to 4 hours only.

I somehow doubt that; as I understand it that config is purely for domestic & short haul only. Seat guru lists it as such. AFAIK AirJapan is not planned as a budget / LCC brand, rather a medium-tier carrier, so I'd expect it to be more like an ANA light than a full ANA budget / LCC.

What used to happen is they flew 763ERs and 787s on ANA AOC, supplying crew for certain routes only. Hence why all ANA 787s and international 767s carry Air Japan titles; they could fly ANA flight and switch to AJX later.

Now it seems that this is not going to happen and AJX is going stand-alone.

Strange announcing this so far out. Almost two years to launch.

I assume the 767s will be retired.
