REX to withdraw from 5 more routes with another 2 potentially to go as well

The ones going are

Adelaide to Kangaroo island
Sydney to Bathurst, Grafton, Lismore and Ballina

I thought they left KI already a while ago? Remember there was some media uproar. Or was that QFLink?

They said they were going to pull out, however reversed their decision, but now appear to have re-revered their decision and are now pulling out again.

Bathurst to Orange Airport is just a 40 minute drive, so the competition at Orange has decimated Bathurst flights
Same goes for Lismore to Ballina Airport, REX put on a late arrival and early morning departure to/from Ballina, matched by QFLink
Grafton was tagged with Lismore, so that's gone as well
Kangaroo Is was direct competition along with Albury to Melbourne

So REX are correct in what they claim
QF are bullies
They have deep pockets
Would they have gone down this path if REX did not start up 737 operations ?

One needs to understand that REX were between a rock and a hard place when it seemed like VA was gonski
Without the flow of passengers from REX to VA onward and the same in reverse REX would have been vulnerable
Passengers wanting eg. Armidale to Melbourne would just go over to QF
So REX kind of had to do something, then VA got a second life and REX were likely too far in to pull out....

QF are not troubled by ZL's 737 operations. They are just too insignificant for anyone to really worry about.

ZL's jet operations was a vanity project that was doomed as soon as it became obvious the VA would survive. ZL had hoped to do the same thing that DJ did when AN collapsed but, this time, there was no collapse and the Covid crisis meant the temporary shutdown of operations did not affect customers in any real way.

In fact, VA managed to shed huge amount of debt in administration and is now more formidable than it was pre-Covid. ZL should have walked away from its mainline jet operation as soon as there were obviously a number of parties willing to invest significant amounts in VA; that they didn't was a massive failure by ZL's Board of Directors and has imperilled the whole business.

Qantas VH-OQJ is about 40mins from touchdown in Sydney bringing the A380 fleet back to 4. Good to see another big bird in the skies once again

Also JL is moving MEL to a morning service for the first time, but it looks like it’s back to the red eye schedule in northern winter.

I actually booked MEL-NRT-FRA connected well! Alas they moved it a day earlier and ruined my Tokyo transit as borders won’t have opened. Tricky with split hubs between NRT and HND for Euro connections
