As someone who's lived in Manchester for the past 8.5 years.... I'm not surprised one bit that it was a flight from MAN. I'm just mildly surprised it was on the KLM flight not easyJet!

Was their any reason why they fought ? Were some Man City fans and some were Man U fans ? Were they arguing over the armrests ? Was alcohol use involved ? Arguments over having to wear masks ? A bachelor/stag party group going on a sex and drinking holiday ? No matter what, this kind of behaviour is unacceptable and sadly supports stereotypes of UK males. I hope they enjoyed the special accommodations of His Majesty of the Netherlands, learning intimately the Netherlands criminal justice processes as well as parted from 100's of UK Pounds at an unfavorable exchange rate.

I’m British and some of us are the trashy of Europe.
Not new either.
From a schoolteacher in the 1970’s commenting that after spending time as it was called then ‘on the Continent’ noticing how much littering goes on here, to football ‘supporters’ behavior which culminated in 1985 with a mass casualty event and three year ban for England clubs in Europe for several years, to who is running the country now.

And yes, we are likely the worst there for brawling, usually when drunk, on planes and/or airports.
The latter could be mitigated by restrictions on booze sales at airports but profits first.

One thing that I find disturbing (apart from the recurrence of such events in general) is that in this case the captain entered the passenger cabin attempting to calm the fighters. In my view as someone not familiar with the relevant procedures in place, isn't this a significant risk for this situation to turn into a full-fledged emergency if the captain gets hurt? Wouldn't it be preferable for the flight crew to remain locked in the flight deck and bring the aircraft to the ground ASAP?

AFAIK the flight had already landed, probably explaining why the cpt got involved.

Last time I flew to Portugal my flight landed early in the morning as flights from the U.S. usually do. At the same time a flight from the UK had arrived and half the pax were so intoxicated they could barely find their way out of the baggage claim area.

i agree. the Captain should have stayed of the flight deck. if the Captain gets hurt then the 1st officer would have to fly the plane and that would be terrifying. Just ask the Irish Mirror.

Aircraft was parked at the gate when this brawl broke out. So at not time was there any risk inflight. Call was made to the military police at Schiphol who arrived quickly and removed the party. This from a internal klm memo.

This reddit thread has a video that was filmed just prior to the fight that provides some context for the beating that occurred. It looks like the guy who got beat up by several men provoked it.

But contrary to popular belief alcohol can be bought and consumed before arriving at the airport. With online check ins etc intoxicated passengers can make it to the plane before any one notices. Banning it at the airport would only have a limited effect. Those that want to drink...will have a drink, even a duty free bottle if they have to.

But I think the real problem sometimes lies on ground staff and, the airlines.
Why? well, why actually allow those guys in the flight in the first place if they are (as it was implied) drunk? I once flew out Bulgaria with a couple of guys on the plane who could barely walk to their seats. Surprise surprise, they did make as far as the runaway and the plane had to go back to the gate.
Roudy behaviour, drunkenness, etc... should be dealt before the flight do board up rather than on the air or on arrival.
Happens everywhere - the reason more brits (and some Americans, for example) get into the news is nothing to deal with them as a people - it is to deal with he fact that ground crew are more worried in putting the plane in the skies rather than sorting out these issues before the departure. Who says they were drunk when they boarded? It is almost impossible to stop people drinking their own booze "smuggled" on board.

You cannot ban alcohol because of a few idiots but I do think that better policing needs to be introduced, whether that be at security, at the gate or onboard. Over the limit...sorry your not flying. I would be the first to admit that that some of these people just hurl abuse but somehow we need to get on top of this.

I sincerely hope these guys are banned and charged with assault etc.
