Official photo of Lufthansa's first 787

First official photo of Lufthansa's first 787. The bird does look gorgeous. Plenty of lucky guys at LH will have a great time winging these beautiful birds all over the world.

I still don't understand LH's stance on 1-2-1 direct aisle access J seats. They could have done something revolutionary with the A359 but waited until the B789. SWISS has newer seats than LH or OS.

Nice, but I think it just needs some.... yellow, that's it, yellow is what's missing!

Just a tip to users: you have to actually scroll down on the article to see the PR photo shared by Lufthansa.

Sorry, but I think it looks very bland and generic. Simply doesn't stand out at all. It's "just another plane at the airport". But to each their own, I guess!

As much as I enjoy seeing a new aircraft in new colors… it just looks boring. As previous posters have said, it could use some yellow to give it even just a touch of flair.

Yeah agreed... would've looked great in THE lufthansa colors, not this bland design.

Great aircraft regardless, lets just tell ourselves the clear look is meant to resemble the look of some fine, white wine... and the tail is the logo of that bottle.

Has Lufthansa stopped painting aircraft identifying letters on the vertical stabilizer for all aircraft? I've noticed many of the LH 359 lack the letters and wondered if that's fleet wide for all new paint jobs.

The tail number on the photo is D-ABPA. According to Flightradar24 it’s a 2 year old airplane. Isn’t the airplane age supposed to start from the factory delivery date?

I still wonder how LH is going to use these birds... as just a margin A333/343 replacement (seeing as they're essentially the same size) , or as a route opener?

I'm really hoping the latter, as it could be the key for getting Lufty-proper (back) on routes like PHX, MSY, etc.

Unfortunately, this non-livery follows the modern trend for blandness. I wish Lufthansa had used a lot more imagination to take their previous iconic livery forward with more creative use of the same blue and yellow colour combination.

My understanding is that it starts on the day of the very first test flight.

Since the aircraft is an ntu plane (originally ordered by Hainan, then was supposed to go to Vistara), makes sense why it's 2 years old (closer to 3 actually).

I've just passed through Frankfurt three times in the past week (twice on LH) and all over the airport there are the old colour scheme, the ill-judged blue/black tails, and the new colours.

Fair's fair. The yellow - to my eyes - is starting to look a bit "old". The clean new white and blue - the right shade of blue - looks classy.

I was among those who groaned when we first saw the new scheme (sans yellow) but it has grown on me. I reckon they got it right.

Unfortunately they really did. Hard to identify the planes now on the tarmac when they are like in a terminal line up. You only have the registration on the aft fuselage and the last two letters on the nose gear doors.

Nice. Now their livery is as bland as their onboard product. At least they are consistent.

Wouldn't make more sense to open routes on the a333 instead which is about 30-50 less seats? Kind of like what was done with STL. So maybe they can put the 789s on the existing routes and free up some a333s for route openings

Whatever the Hainan airline 787-9 config is. That’s the config of LH. I think LH is just changing the seat covers to blue to match their branding

I believe they will be equipped with the latest cabin that was announced just before the pandemic really got going. Not sure of the exact seat count since this now includes PE

Yeah I’ve just found it now.

Total seats is 294 seats

Which is about 26 business seats, 21 PE and the rest economy

So it’s quite a drop in premium seats from the a333. The a333 sits about 42 business seats but obviously comes in that horrendous 2-2-2 config

I thought the Hainan ones were coming after the first few company-ordered ones, which were supposed to now debut the new "777X" config??

Company birds were always going to be later, these first few aircraft are ex Hainan and I believe another airline with GE engines, I believe it was said the LH aircraft with have Trents

It doesn’t seem like it because of the backlog and production and delivery problems on the 87. They ordered 5 last year that were now coming ahead of the company ordered ones.

The one that’s pictured above is the first coming and that’s an ex Hainan frame

OK, we now have an improved business product while at the same time the economy class product is on the way to the bottom with that horrendous 3-3-3 configuration :crowded: :banghead:

Better cry your tears now.... because there's almost no chance on the planet that they won't have the even-more-wretched 3x4x3 configuration on the 777Xs, whenever they finally come out.

Sidewalls shmidewalls.

Big drop compared to the A333 but pretty close to LH's A343s (30 / 28 / 221).

Which makes sense. 787 has plenty of range to replace the A343s and that fleet is older than the A333 fleet (nevermind the whole 4 vs 2 engines) so would be phased out first anyways.

Ultimately whatever directly replaces the A333 in terms of seat counts has to be physically larger (787-10 anyone?) unless LH is willing to compromise on J seats/ direct aisle access for all in the future.

If you look at UA's 789 with direct aisle access business class the seat count comes pretty close to LH's A333.

UA 789: 48 / 21 / 188
LH A333: 42 / 28 / 185

If they just needed a replacement with a similar seat count the 789 could replace both the A333 and A343 fleets.
