I came across this awesome video of a JAT DC10 at JFK in the '80s. Apologies if it has been posted before. Lots of cockpit, cabin, and ground footage together with other aircraft from that time.

JAT always fascinated me as IIRC they were the only soviet carrier with such an extensive Western built fleet and had a network which rivalled many of their European counterparts.

SU obviously had an extensive network but in the '80s it was operated by their IL/TU fleet.

I remember watching those JAT DC10s up close at JFK T2.

The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was not part of the USSR.

Yugoslavia was not a soviet state nor a Warsaw pack nation under Tito.

Indeed he was pretty much the architect of socialism with capitalist principles ( decades before China) and founder of the non aligned movement.

Being half Serb and half Croat he held the country together remarkably well.

Now as for Jat, Inex Adria, Pan Adria and Aviogenex they all performed the important tasks of bringing in Hard Currency from Western Europe through cheap tourism in the main.
Jat also maintained global links with the Serb, Croatian, Slovene and Albanian diasporas around the world as far as Australia, and North America using 707-300s and later DC10 series 30 aircraft .

Romania also bought western types for Tarom including the BAC1-11 ( they built the last ones !) and Boeing 707s

LOT acquired Viscounts early on through later on were to go with Ilyushin and Tupolev however they didn’t want too .

Tito had gaul and strength to standup to Moscow and ruthlessly routed out Moscow aligned people from the Politburo at every turn.

Was he a saint god no , ruthlessly controlled the media and news dissemination, dealt dissidents with a heavy hand ( long prison terms) and applied a greater good approach to many things.

I do too, but I thought they used the Pan Am Worldport (T3) at JFK? I remember seeing them in CLE around 1990 as well, as JAT operated into CLE once or twice a week during parts of the year, through YYZ, ORD, or JFK (I don't remember the routing).

I was just about to say that given how non aligned Tito was. If anything it was more impressive that Romania clearly part of the Soviet Bloc acquired 707s under Ceaușescu and BAC-111s, a few locally built.

Any thruth to the story I heard decades ago that JAT partially paid for those DC-10s with pork, in some barter deal?

IIRC some DC-9's were paid with pork as part of some Yugoslav-US trade deal.

They did at one time. You could easily watch the action from T2 though because they always used the gates facing NW/DL because NW handled their weight and balance and I think below the wing too. My parents were NW and my dad was JFK ops and handled them every night, hence the frequent trips to Jugoslavia through the favors of their US country manager. I flew JAT 707's (former NW birds) in 1978 from the Worldport to Zagreb and the then brand new DC-10 to Split and Belgrade in 1979 from the TWA terminal. In fact I flew the very last flight with the McDonell Douglass crew familiarizing the JAT crew. Somewhere over the N Atlantic separatists phoned in a bomb threat to the Jugoslav Consulate and when we landed in Split we were met with Jugoslav military and whatever they called the internal security service (I was 9 so had no idea what they were called) where everything and everyone was taken off the aircraft and searched and questioned. As the only 3 US citizens on the flight this took over 8 hours for my parents. I was done in just a few minutes and then put in the custody of a coffee shop waitress at the Split airport to wait for my parents where I learned the joys of both Vodka and Turkish Coffee. This caused us to miss our connection at Belgrade and had to wait 2 days for the next flight to Sydney via KWI and SIN on another former NW 707. Good times

Such a great video... Real airplanes, real noise, real cockpits and no IFE systems! For all its safety and comforts, the technology has certainly taken a chunk of romance out of it...

Despite the quality, it is great video of typical JFK in the 80s during the early evening "push" to Europe. For those wondering what the turbo-prop was with the white tail, it was a Ransome Airlines Mohawk 298 ( an "Americanized" French Nord 262 with re-engined PWC PT-6As). The northeast was about the only place you could see this aircraft type in the world where they frequented DCA, PHL and JFK serving smaller cities regionally.

What was the last aircraft type JAT flew from BEG to JFK (excluding Air Serbia)?

What an awesome video! Thank you for posting that! I had forgotten that DC-10s had an additional two-wheel bogie centered between the four-wheeled main landing gears. Wow, all of those historic aircraft and not a winglet in sight!

Josef Broz Tito was an interesting man, all right. He firmly held Yugoslavia together under his unique brand of socialism. It all came unraveled after his death. I've lost count of how many independent states have come from the former Yugoslavia so far.

Very cool video! That brings back memories from my childhood. We flew on a JAT DC-10 from YYZ to Belgrade in the early 1990s.

The DC-10. JAT never operated any other wide body except for a very short term L1011 lease in the late 80s (might have been a wet lease). JAY was obviously always struggling after the fall of Yugoslavia in the early 90s/subsequent conflicts in the region and could never afford a full fleet modernization.

What great video, and not a boring A380 or 787 in sight, I use to see JAT at Melbourne on a Sunday afternoon, use to come in from Sydney and then down to Melbourne before flying out to Singapore, Abu Dubai then on to Belgrade, loved their DC-10/30s. The only Eastern Bloc country to tell Moscow to shove it their [email protected]#$.

The last Australian routing that operated for many years was BEG-DXB-SIN-MEL-SYD, twice week with a 3rd flight sometimes in peak season. Pax were usually VFR Yugoslavs or Scandinavian backpackers (this was one of the cheapest ways to get to Australia back then before fares came down- they took a ferry/train to BEG and then paid for the Australian tickets in dinars).

Fun fact: as the Australian Govt. kicked JAT out of Australia at the start of the war the local staff were on full pay (courtesy of the Govt) until they found new jobs- the union negotiated that as it was the Govt, not the company, that made them unemployed.

I always thought the main reason Tito was able to not obey the Soviets was Yugoslavia was too far away for the tanks to get to, even via other Eastern bloc countries.

Great video and memories . I still have the JAT DC-10 promo brochure and JAT timetable from back then. They used to run it between BEG-TIV in Summer also.

The DC-10-30, & -40 (as well as the MD-10 & KC-10) have the center two wheel bogie. The DC-10-10 does not. JAT operated the -30.
