Confirmed: RED Air MD-80 accident in MIA

Tue Jun 21, 2022 10:08 pm

My friend is on the tarmac in Miami reporting that a RED Air MD80 crashed at MIA and is on fire with passengers evacuating. Anyone have any insight?

Sounds like everyone is okay.

Not a good look for your brand new airline!

Looks like there’s some antenna wrapped around the wing.

Kudos to the crew for a safe and successful evacuation! So sad to see the MD80 splayed out like that. :(

Wow that was a pretty rough ride at the end there. Glad everyone is ok. At the start of the video it does appear the left wing is already fairly low or on the ground.

The correct question depends on the amount of speed tape your currently have in stock.

But otherwise, glad everyone got out OK. Without seeing the actual landing, hard to decipher what happened, but that looked rough. The weather isn't bad either:

KMIA 212353Z 03008KT 10SM FEW030 SCT250 28/21 A3007 RMK AO2 SLP183 T02780211 10306 20278 58004 $

8 knots of wind, good viz? Who want's to take bets they either planted it too hard for some reason or another, or they landed short and hit something?

I'm trying to figure out the sequence of events here. I could be wrong but it looks to me as if the right main went down first (starting the fire), then the left main went down. Looks as if the nose gear went down last.

I wonder if he had gear down and locked indicators for each and thought everything was normal or if he knew something was wrong and there was trouble ahead. I tend to think he wasn't aware of any problems or they would have had the fire trucks close to the runway in preparation for exactly this happening.

Gotta love those pax exiting the aircraft with their luggage... there was an accident, I think SU? where reportedly some pax with their carry ons prevented many people from evacuating on time

The ILS antenna for what appears to be Runway 30 is whats wrapped around the right wing. If it was the ILS for Runway 27 that would have been more problematic for the airport going into the summer months. Its hard to tell by re rewatching the video of thats what sparked the initial fire or not.

It also could have been a really hard landing that collapsed the mains. I've watched these Red Air pilots landing at MIA before and they really tend to come in hot, flare late and smack it down. This was a 31+-year old ex-AA bird that spent several years with Venezuela's LASER Airlines before recently being taken over by Red Air. I imagine shortages due to US sanctions of Venezuela kept this plane from getting decent quality parts for its last heavy check.

It looks like it took out the RWY 30 GS (tower and shelter). You can see in the video behind the left wing a GS antenna. It could be that the wing struck the tower and caught fire.

With 9000hrs flying the plane and seeing the video….I would guess. 1. Hard landing collapsed the left main gear which caused it to depart the runway. 2. Lost control for some reason and went off the runway. 3. No clue…let’s wait for the accident investigators to figure it out.. I like choice #3.

Hello all,
Looking at the ramp video right before the plane stopped moving, the left main gear was gone evidenced by the left wing leaning to the left. Then the right main gear collapsed plopping the plane to the ground. A small flash fire started followed by the larger fire under the right wing.
I'm glad everyone got out but did they have to evacuate with their carry ons and whip out their phones to video everything? One day someone will get hurt or killed because someone evacuated a crashed, burning plane with their carry ons...

What is a typical settlement passengers might receive from the airline in an accident like this?

Did pilots declare an emergency? I noticed that emergency vehicles weren't waiting at the end of the runaway.

Passengers escaping with luggage should be banned for life from flying any airline and fined at least $25000.00.

Typically it will be governed by the Montreal Convention. The airline is liable for up to a maximum of about $175K for "bodily injury" if they weren't negligent, but things like pain and suffering aren't covered. The Montreal Convention will also determine what one could expect for lost luggage.

If this airline is as shady as some folks seem to think, then the passengers might be lucky to get anything in compensation.

The thrust reversers´ position is interesting. Seems the plane pancaked before they were able to extend completely. So I suppose they had no braking action other than friction.

I’ve watched this video several times. 1 minute 45 seconds before the L1 door was opened and the slide was activated.

This seems like WAY TOO MUCH TIME was wasted to get the passengers seated in the front of that plane out of a potential very bad situation…

Mainly if their stupido fellow passengers were leaving throught the overwing exits with baggage. The one walking away with two rolling luggage is the worst example.

There is no such thing, not in aviation accidents. Because there were no deaths, amounts will be quite small.

Now I have to ask - why are you asking? The fire was probably still smoldering when you posed the question.

What has happened to passengers, absolutely despicable behaviour displayed by those aboard, LEAVE EVERYTHING ON BOARD is an unambiguous instruction and it takes the mind of an idiot not to understand that.
if it was up to me every single one of these idiots would be taking a trip to Moscow and paying their respects to the 41 people who died due to this exact selfish behaviour.
it cannot be acceptable to get away with this and these people need to be barred from ever so much as setting foot at an airport ever again.

if I myself as a FA ever did anything even close to this during an evacuation, I would never be employable again, and yet the pax who do this get let off.

What's strange is that my flight landed about 15 minutes later at MIA and nothing looked unusual other than we landed on one of the northern runways and usually in afternoon and evenings arrivals land on one of the 2 southern runways.

According to aviation-safety.net, this aircraft (whatever its current registration is) began life as N16545 with American Airlines.

For me, at least, this was my last-ever MD80 flight of any kind, in September, 2010, flying it DFW-SAN. According to my notes, it was an equipment substitution after a three-hour delay.

Sadly this crash will likely shut down this still new airline. It was created in partnership with a Venezuelan airline to offer cheaper flights and for the DR to recover from the loss of tourism from the Covid-19 Pandemic. They had plans to expand this year to several cities in parts of South, Central American and USA, looks like they are destroyed like this aircraft was, but was also facing other LCC's based in the DR and elsewhere in the region. https://onemileatatime.com/news/red-air-miami-airport/.

About 1:58 from "landing" to first ARFF on site applying foam / water. Pretty fast. Less than a minute for the first airport vehicle to arrive. Excellent work by MIA airport ground and rescue staff getting to this one pronto.

Actually no, its a charter operation to run passengers flying LASER from CCS to MIA via SDQ, and since sanctions don't allow for flights between the US and Venezuela, they would hop on Red Air from SDQ to MIA as a charter flight.

There is already plenty of airlines and flights offering flights to DR, and this operation was never meant to actually help anything other than to avoid the sanctions and profit as a result of the sanctions flying passengers to the US from Venezuela and return.

Lots of liveatc recordings:

2022-06-21 MIA ground at 2230z - start listening at 09:00
2022-06-21 MIA south tower at 2230z - start listening at 10:00 (oopsie to the captain that broadcast his cabin announcement on the tower frequency).
2022-06-21 MIA south approach at 2230z - start listening at the start where you can hear L5-203 (landing cancellations starting at 08:30)

Hello all,
Watching all of the videos, I must credit the MIA ARFF teams. They had one truck at the aircraft super quick before the fire really got going with the other units following soon there after. Yes I'm a fan of ARRF teams and they train constantly for events like this but these crews yesterday made a bad situation from getting worse...
