N757AF gets fresh paint

Thu Jul 07, 2022 2:16 am

I noticed this video showing N757AF getting a fresh coat of paint along with an updated design for the tail. For whatever reason both outboard ailerons seem to be removed. Apologies for the music but I thought fans of the 757 would appreciate to see another hot rod getting to live on.

Ailerons presumably have to be painted and balanced separately as their shape and weight are critical for flight control and flutter purposes

Where is the new engine coming from? Didn’t they have to borrow one just to move it?

Glad to see another 757 getting a fresh coat of paint. I like the American flag on the tail too. Looking forward to seeing this Renton hot rod blast around the country and world again.

Personally, I do not like the look of the RR engines on the 757, but this is a stunning paint scheme. Very impressive with the high gloss finish.

It really does look amazing - great job. Not a huge fan of the way the flag is stylized on the tail - feels very clipart-ish which conflicts with the retro 80's style livery of the jet. Super cool though!!

Judging by where the aircraft is being serviced I highly doubt it.

Looking closely I believe it's paper protecting the inside of the window. They appear to be painting around the doors and may have covered the inside of the windows. At 4:01 of the YouTube video you can see on the first window it's paper that's partially torn.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the tail was “North American Airlines.” It’s awfully similar to their flag logo.

It's flying will probably be paid for as campaign or PAC expenses and paid for that way, new engine lease included I'm sure.

Good catch!

Is that SOP for painting a plane, or is there something else going on inside?

I personally don't get the hype, it's as tacky as the man who owns it imo. The flag on top of black looks atrocious and now the only gold on the plane is the titles leaving all the elements of the design looking arbitrary. As the old adage goes, "money doesn't buy taste".

I honestly have no clue but I'm sure someone on here knows. They probably do a pretty extensive job on covering all the interior tidbits assuming they weren't removed.

There's another old adage "to each their own"also this is an enthusiast page and an old 757 getting it's life extended should be a positive thing regardless of the owner.

Cool video.
The brief shot of all the painting supplies stacked together on the hangar floor (about 1:03) was interesting. Always impressive to see how much material goes into this kind of work.

I have to imagine painters enjoy this kind of one-off work. Must get old painting the same exact airline paint jobs over and over again.

I agree that the titles and flag look tacky, but the base scheme is at least unique. And I may be wrong, but I think the titles were the only gold on the old scheme too.

I'll admit the flag is better than the ole T

Also the classic RR decals, still a good touch.

Did they paint over the already existing black paint? Did they strip the fuselage paint?

It appears that they painted over the old paint except on the vertical stabilizer and probably some other components. Because this plane has relatively low utilization they probably aren't as concerned with the extra weight from the old paint versus a commercially operated aircraft.

Agreed, I thought it looked dated and tacky when I used to see it at LGA all the time. All these years later, it just looks even more dated.

Oh no they are going to be angered by this. All that talk of it never flying again. I don’t think it has 10k cycles on it. Paul Allen owned it. I think he had two. It takes a while to get a plane that sat for 4 years back in flying condition. It might have been better to store it out west. NY has cold winters and humid summers. Not the best conditions for an aircraft that sits. There are 757’s of similar vintage that have flown 3-5 times a day for the last 30 years. They are meant to fly not sit on the ground.

Surprised they only sanded down the wings and just cleaned and put primer onto the old paint for the fuselage.
Wouldn't you get better adhesion if you'd remove the old paint and started all new?

Or how are aircraft usually re-painted?

I figure since it probably sat in storage for most of its previous paint life and how it looked once cleaned, was probably not worth a full strip of the black and the extra weight isn't much.

I was a big fan of the dark US Airways liveries, even though they were looking pretty nasty when they were overdue for painting. Trump has good livery taste at-least. A lot of people around these parts miss cheat lines and that whole era.

It matches the US Airways/TWA look of the Air Force One livery proposal its owner also came up with in MS Paint.

Not commenting on whether or not Trump should run again, but IMO this is another indicator he will. If he was not running he most likely would not have repainted the aircraft. This probably is the part of the 2024 campaign branding effort.

I was of the opinion back when the original Trump 727 was painted that it looked like a campaign aircraft livery.

It’s pretty clear he’s running again.

He flat out says “a lot of people are going to be very happy” which is what he said before 2016.

I posted this on the thread we had from 6 months ago on this and for some reason it got deleted and locked. Cool video/paint job, imho, the plane looks pretty great.

https://youtu.be/fXfmvzsaTp0

Longer/older documentary;

https://youtu.be/gDdIE0u9NCY

If I recall that thread, it was originally delivered as an airliner, but then used/owned by another billionaire at a fairly young age for the frame, and it has less than 20,000 hours/6,000 or so cycles on it now. The front part has extra sound deadening so it is very, very quiet.

If it is well maintained it should last a long time/go to another owner at some point (let’s keep the politics out of it please); even though it was built back in 1991, I could see it being one of the longer-serving/surviving 757’s eventually.

It was flying Saturday, 15 October, looked like touch and goes around the Lake Charles area. My guess is test flights after maintenance.
