KLM 737 lands with cargo door open

Sun Aug 07, 2022 8:26 pm

A few days ago a KLM 737-700 landed in AMS with its forward cargo door slightly open. Wouldn't they have an indication in the flight deck it was not secure? Would they have "not been able to pressurize" on the climb out? Or could it have popped open on landing?

Would have had to happened on approach to AMS or on landing with how the door is designed.

Pressure panels would have blown if it happened in the cruise so as mentioned above can only have happened in vicinity of AMS.

On the 737 opening a pit door should illuminate the associated "FWD CARGO" or "AFT CARGO" light on the door warnings section of the overhead panel and also trigger a MASTER CAUTION - DOORS light on the dash. Where I work it's on the checklist to confirm all the door warning lights are off before engine start and they are plug doors so in normal flight when the cabin pressurizes any already closed pit doors would be held tighter into the closed position by the pressure difference.

And don’t forget that the door opens inwards. Which means that cabin pressure puts it to closed position.

They would not push back sometime the door May need to be opened and shut because the light is on. With it wide open there would be an indication in more than one place. I do t understand how it opened up. The handle has to be pulled out and turn. The 737 cargo door open inward and up.

The handle likely was not fully stowed upline causing it it to shift and pop open on landing (best guess is the handle was turned half way). Used to be very common on MD-80s and still is common on CRJs

Cargo- and passenger doors of 737s are helplessly outdated constructions. Some people will come to say that those are "working perfectly" but in reality both are a pain in the #&@ for crew and ground staff as well compared to Airbus (which is a 30+ years old design itself).

Thank you for the info. Question if you don't mind: did B737MAX change any design of the cargo doors or it just copied from B737NG/Classic? Could you also specify whether you are referring to B737 classic or B737NG? I am just curious, no other motives (i.e. not a fan boy of either A or B, just a curious man).

They're pretty much identical. The only real issues for ground crew are that they are rather small.

Open inwards so can be blocked by luggage that has moved forward in flight.
Require people to duck down when positioned in the doorway.

If there's is an advantage other the airbus it's that they are far quickerr to open and close and don't require the aircraft to be powered.

Featured on the MAX is the exact same cargo door locking mechanism as seen on the 737 classics and NGs. And then passenger door mechanisms to my knowledge are the same (Or atleast appear the same from visuals).
Definitely seen a fair share of passenger and cargo door handles not stowed properly on the 737s. Definitely in need of some form of change.

Yep, can be blocked by baggage; occupies quite some unusable space of the cargo hold; on some subtypes the aft door is too high to reach from the ground when you want to close it; if it's not adjusted properly thinner loaders might not be able to pull it down when closing it; the latch handle tries to cut your fingers off (but at least to kidnap your gloves) occasionally. The hydraulic operation of the Airbus is a dream ride in comparison. Worth noting that on the first 320 family aircraft the latch handle was similar than on the 737 but they realised that it's a source of injuries and changed it to a bigger, single hand-operated one after a few years.

the inward opening cargo doors on the 737 are old to be sure BUT a time tested design. and? How many T 737's had been delivered BEFORE the first Airbus was delivered? Airbus had the choice in what to do or to Not do with their doors. and I can say this. their Hydraulic door opening system? "Ain't ALL THAT" especially since you have to disassemble damn near the entire Cargo pit and remove the floors to get to the hydraulics that operate the door. while the Boeing is not much more than a simple Spring. And the larger Boeings have electric rotary actuators and NO hydraulics on the doors
If you haven't had to work on Both? then you wouldn't be so quick to bash one over the other.

There you go, just like I said. Small problem is that the people "working on both" is a tiny-tiny fraction of people trying to work WITH both. It's very easy to maintain an axe but a chainsaw is a lot better for the job. Mainly if you need to pay the same price for them like you do here.
