Did United Fly Into Ely Or Elko Nevada?

Mon Apr 22, 2002 10:55 am

does anyone have any info on United Airlines flying into Ely or Elko Nevada during the early to mid-80's?

Better yet, any pictures?

Cheers!

I don't know if the service went into the 80s but UA had a daily Ely-Elko-Reno-San Francisco flight in the 1970s. It was operated by a Convair 580 and was the last mainline prop service, I believe, for any of the US majors at the time.
The day you stop learning is the day you should die.

Yes, UA flew 721/732 service to both E cities in the mid-late 70's.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

There are present rumours going around that SkyWest will enter back into the Nevada market as a United Express brand.

I heard that Skywest will fly 2 daily flights to Reno from San Fran on the Brasilia and they will continue on to Elko, Nevada.

The flights for EKO/ELY started in SLC and ended in SFO with a stop in RNO. It originally started with props and went to jets later on. It operated once daily.

There was an article about this in the original Airliners magazine (the Kalmbach one). As I recall the SFO-OAK-SMF?-RNO-EKO/ELY-SLC flight was United's last piston flight (DC-6 until 1970); although the United timetables gave no indication of it, during 1970-77 the flight was operated by a Frontier CV580 (in Frontier paint? with Frontier crews, I assume. When did Frontier drop the 580, anyway?). In 1977 they switched to a UA 73S; did they ever fly a 727 on the route?
