NZ - Dave the goose & EK - Gerry the goose

Fri Sep 02, 2022 7:37 am

Since 2016 Air NZ has had Dave the goose as part of its ‘better way to fly marketing’, the story of Save the goose who decides to fly Air NZ instead of flying during his migration. The adverts have been refreshed several times, but seems a staple (at least in AU) of NZ marketing.

Fast forward today and Emirates have released Gerry the goose, who has decided to fly emirates for his migration… with the slogan ‘fly better’

NZ have come back with a tongue and cheek response. Gerry’s ya goose chose the wrong airline.

I’m sure NZ is insignificant to EK, but does seem poor form to rip off someone else’s campaign- is this a case of imitation as a form of flattery, or a media agency who didn’t thing NZ would notice? Are there any other examples in airline marketing of such a obvious rip off

That'll rustle some feathers in NZ! I've seen NZ's lawyer too, he will rip EK a new one for this!

But seriously, c'mon Emirates really?

Honestly, brilliant campaign (and reprisal/response) from NZ! I'm such a Gerry Fan, and was unaware of him (which is rather surprising, considering how many iconic NZ commercial campaigns that there have been as of late). Kudos to NZ, the marketing/media Team, and h/t to Gerry!

As for the 'response' to EK, who know - they have been on a partnership roll as of late, and their recent partnership with UA has a surprising afterthought of how increased partnership between EK and NZ might be beneficial. NZ could (although in a smaller amount/range) partner with EK (much in the same way that QF did) in order to access destinations at DXB, and/or partner to Europe (and crucially, to LHR). "If you can't beat them, join them" might just as easily help both the "Gerrys", all the while.

I am not suggesting that EK should join Star Alliance, however am suggesting that a codeshare with United would have seemed less likely than one with NZ, and I do wonder if such expensive marketing would truly not dove tail, and/or work out for both in future.

NZ Is known to be cheeky when it comes to communications and marketing. So seems about right for them to have reacted, and naming EK.

Pathetic on Emirates part. Seriously get a grip on your own idea......... dont steal Dave ..... ANZ owns it when it comes to this Ad idea.

Air NZ has responded, in the most Air NZ way possible.

Unfortunately, this happens all the time in Marketing. The younger generation think they won't get caught when they rip off a campaign from afar...

Sounds like they didn't do they research, its pretty obvious on NZ's social media that they aren't scared to call out other airlines.

Herman the duck was added to a Wisconsin Central Lockheed Electra back in 1948.
The use of flying fowl is not new.
