New Bodø Airport

Fri Dec 09, 2022 9:47 am

Apparently the plans for a new Bodø Airport in Norway have been given the green light after years of debate.

https://kommunikasjon.ntb.no/pressemeld ... 46&lang=no (in Norwegian - scroll down for two pictures).

Work will begin in 2024. The new airport will be located approximately 900 meters south of the current airport. According to the plan, the airport will open for operations in 2029. Today's airport will be in operation until then.

My understanding is that the Norwegian Air Force will move out, freeing up space currently used for military purposes. The civil airport will move to that area. From what I gather, it will not really result in a larger airport - terminal does not look bigger than the current one and the new runway will apparently be even slightly shorter. So it obviously is mostly about making the current area available for urban development - the airport is in walking distance to the airport (I remember walking to my downtown hotel from the terminal when I visited). Interesting, though, that they invest so much money given that Bodo is a really modest city of 50.000 or so inhabitants.

I'm a little thrown off about the location by looking at the CGI photo. Looks like the new terminal will be far down at the southwestern end of the airport. The picture does not show a threshold for the runway which is currently there. Will they be getting rid of that? Not all too familiar with this airport, but looking at the airport ramp on Google Earth they have quite a lot of space to build a new terminal closer to the current one instead of moving that far down...

You are right about your accusations about the new Bodø airport.
The military wil move to Evenes (EVE) and Ørland Air Base and the civil airport will then move 1km south and take over todays Bodø Air Base.
The new airport won't be any bigger (at this stage), but can expand if needed. Not that imo will happen bc there won't be any VFR traffic with need to bigger infrastructure. VFR traffic will go to Tromsø.

The main reason for this move is:
a) The need to replace the runway, which is in terrible conditions.
b) The terminal is to small inside with its semi circular shape.
c) City of Bodø want to expand its boundary and house more people. Therefore they will takeover todays Airport area and creat a new neighborhood with room for 15k homes and 20k workplace.

Hope this explain little more about the "new" airport.

Where are the additional 15-20 people going to come from to require all this new space for housing and industry?

I think its more of a wish thinking then anything else. The entire part of that country is in decline population wise.

Not quite correct. Nordland county has an 1.9% increase in population since 2010. City of Bodø increased it's population by 9% since 2010. If this continues Bodø will need that extra space freed by moving the airport.
Northern Norway as a whole has 0% increase/decrease (more or less). I wouldn't call that a decline in population.

To what extent does Bodo currently serve the Helgeland catchment area? As the new Arctic Circle Airport will open in 2025, there will be a jet-capable airport in the Helgeland area that is currently served by STOLports like Mo i Rana, Mosjoen and Sandnessjoen which cannot not offer flights beyond Bodo and Trondheim. So I guess some folks from the area north of Mo i Rana and south of Bodo these days use Bodo, but will have an alternative in the future.

For a city that currently has 42k inhabtitants and another 13k or so in the area around it, 15k new homes is a lot - that would mean accommodation for approx. 30k people. 9 per cent growth over a 12 year period translates into something like 300 new inhabitants annually., so it would be enough additional capacity for for almost a century (actually, Norway is one of the few OECD that will not see a decline in working population until 2060, but actually a growth (as far as I remember, the biggest in Europe)..

The population issue is interesting, as large parts of the population in Bodø are military employees working at the air base. Closing the base frees up both housing and cuts job opportunities in Bodø by a lot. Meaning investing in new housing and creating a new part of the city (at the location of the old air base) will not be very lucrative.
When Fornebu (FBU/ENFB) closed in 1998, it took decades to build that part of the city, only mega corporations moved there in the beginning, and the new public transport line began construction only 2 years ago, 22 years after the closing of the airport.
