Well, yes, maybe in the not too distant future. Sigonella was a pretty large base, so part of the infrastructure is already there. This has been in the pipeline for quite some time.

I wasn't thinking about next year - I was thinking about Sigonella opening up as a civilian airport for July and August 2023 while Catania airport repairs the damage from the fire

FLR-FLO
Florence is smaller regional airport with a very short and challenging runway. Not a chance of a direct flight. Longest flight at the moment is Tel Aviv on either the A319, or the E2.

The comment you responded to was very clearly a joke. FLR to FLO would be Florence to Florence. The longest (and only-est) current flight from FLO is on AA to CLT at a whopping 99 miles. I would assume that the poster was poking fun at all of the new route guessing that happens on a.net, most of which never comes to pass.

Exactly. I do love the novelty of flights like Charleston WV-Charleston SC and Wilmington DE - Wilmington NC though so I would be happy to see FLR-FLO regardless of how facetious I was being.

As often used to be said, “sarcasm is a low form of wit.”
Genuinely surprised no one contributed an intellectual response for future Italy-US service opportunities.

Is there really a market for routes that don’t exist already? US-Italy is already incredibly well served.
FlyingSicilian wrote:I have dreamed of Commercial CTA USA flights but alas no. Covid killed UA PMO EWR before it could start and no other Italian carriers have taken it back up either post Meridiana. With the success of NAP I think something will be announced in the next two years...fingers crossed.

Italian Government introduced price cap on flights to Sardinia and Sicily which I assume will be struck down when it eventually gets to E.U. Courts.

A great addition, given Sicily's ever increasing popularity as a tourism destination. United had announced daily EWR-PMO-EWR service in 2019 to begin in Summer 2020, using a 767-300ER. The route obviously never launched in 2020 and has not since. Wondering if they ever.
AZ used to operate one of its JFK-FCO frequencies in the 1980s and 1990s as PMO-FCO-JFK.
Didn't the airline that preceded Air Italy (was it Eurofly) operate JFK-PMO at one point, in the summer?

Meridiana ran PMO and NAP to JFK for many years seasonally.
