Re: ITA Airways News and Discussion Thread - 2023

I had booked a flight on ITA from FCO to NCE with a 10AMish departure out of FCO. Got an email and it had been moved to 17:30. They gladly refunded my money because the time frame didn't work. I then booked with LH for that segment. I was really looking forward to flying with ITA but it I not to be this time around.

Looks very sharp. Are the NEOs intended to replace the CEOs 1-for-1?

What are planned total numbers, fleet-wide by type?

They currently have 30 A320CEO in service and 23 A320NEO + 9 A321NEO on order.
Somewhere I´ve read that some or all the A321 will be the LR version, some of which will operate medium to long haul destinations in Middle East

According to informations from EAF website and italian aviation forums they will receive 5 A220-100 this year and the last 2 next year.

I wonder if the fleet plan and the current orders with Airbus and Lessors for all models will be confirmed, modified or outright dropped if and when Lufthansa
gets a stake in ITA.
LH might want to treat ITA like they do at Austrian: first bring your books in order and then you can buy new planes.
I hope that won´t be the case because the current fleet plan is really nice: A221, A223, A320/321NEO, A339, A359

So it seems like the first batch of 320neo's are ntu of S7 and leased from Avolon (thus the OE- registration).

In regards to the fleet plan and (if at all...) any LH involvement, I believe it would perfectly fit to the LH Group fleet. Except for the 339, all types are well known and part of the longterm strategy.
In fact, I even think that they would welcome the "outlier" (339) very much - on the one hand to evaluate the performance in the context of a potential replacement at 4Y, WK, SN; and on the other gain maintenance experience through LH Technik.

Say what you will about ITA, but - A221, A223, A320/321NEO, A339, A359 - would be an absolute world class fleet if it ever comes to fruition.

I call Volare hotline yesterday night and was told they are in the process of extending the validity of all Volare cards which received the 1 year extension email in December 2022 - the update will be reflected in the Volare App by end of Jan.

By the way, I made a reservation using my Flying Blue miles and tried to add my Volare card - did not work. I called the FlyingBlue call center and they managed it: they removed the Flying Blue FF from the reservation and replaced it with my Volare Premium (SkyTeam Elite Plus) manually. Now, my reservation is showing some SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits (such as a second checked luggage for free), but strange enough lounge access is not showing as complimentary.

I received the email as well. Fact is that they joined SkyTeam in a very unorthodox way. All the Elite benefits on other SkyTeam members are null. Flew on Air Europa back in June and they didn't recognize my Volare card, no status, no benefits...nothing. Just try to book a flight with Delta, Air France, Air Euopa, etc and find Volare in the options for FF...is not there (Some still show MileMiglia tho). If you are joining an alliance this is not the way of doing things.

My guess is that they notice that their FF worth nothing on 2022 so they are extending it with the hopes that they can offer benefits across the board with all other SkyTeam members.

Totally agreed. Advice: if you book Air France (cash or miles ticket), call the Flying Blue line afterwards. They will add your Volare card to the reservation manually (that is what they did with me yesterday).

It won’t be needed. They joined SkyTeam just on a courtesy membership for a period of 1 year (I guess for the sake of continuity). They are just waiting to finalize the LH deal - once that’s finalized, they will just withdraw and join Star Alliance.

I would not be so confident. This saga with LH has been ongoing for years now, but somehow never materialized.

Understand what you are saying. However:

1.- The LH deal seems to be an on and off situation. Both parties keep bouncing back to each other, and even in that scenario, implementing a whole system into the alliance matrix can take years. So I don't expect that they will join *A as soon as they are part of the LH playground.
2.- When an airline joins an alliance they are part of the reciprocal benefits. This charade their pulled of admitting ITA as a courtesy has been dreadful. It does nothing but to put a bad image on SkyTeam where there's a member that does nothing but to add a pretty logo to their website. They should have treated their membership either as a new one or as they did with Aeroflot. Just treat it as a suspended member until they get their ducks in a row.

Totally agree on that. Either they join fully, or not join. It is indeed a joke if you are a full member and no FF benefits with other members exist. It is surprising this was even allowed to happen.

LH has just presented a LOI to acquire a minority stake in ITA Airways.

https://www.agenzianova.com/en/news/luf ... a-airways/

The group Lufthansa announced that it has submitted a letter of intent to the Ministry of Economy and Finance with the offer for entry into Italy Airways.

The company aims to initially acquire a minority stake, agreeing options to purchase the remaining shares at a later stage. Should the mission statement be signed by both parties, further negotiations and talks will be conducted in a manner exclusive right.

In particular, the talks will focus on the structure of a possible participation, on the commercial and operational integration of Ita Airways into Lufthansa and on the resulting synergies. Should a contract be concluded, the implementation of the transaction will be subject to the approval of the competent authorities.

The Italian government has confirmed LOI with LF taking a 40% stake in company with further investment down the road. Price of sale looks to be between €200-300.

Well, they have to decide how to use the Alitalia brand name if they don't want it their rights revoked for lack of use. Using it on long-haul flights makes sense, as it's a well known airline brand abroad (regardless of the financial chaos of the airline). Previously it was reported they would also want to use the Alitalia brand on short haul premium routes, but who knows.

... or they could lease the name to a small flying club, like Swiss is doing to keep the Swissair brand rights.

So how does ITA plan to fly to LHR during S23 ? Or will they just rebook everyone to BA (or even Easyjet/Jet2/Ryanair/Vueling/Wizzair out of LGW/LTN/STN) ?

according to newspapers articles appeared a couple of months ago they are expected to run out of money at the end of 2023 - unless LH decides to put some more money in - so I guess they are trying to cut at least unnecessary expenses?

If ITA does get acquired by LH, I guess some of the group’s portfolio of slots can be re-distributed to FCO and LIN for AZ.

Alitalia is a better name and most pax don't know or don't care about past buffoonery. There are other challanges besides the name to sort out.

Does anyone know when will ITA start using their A320neo? They have a few already delivered, on Austrian registration, and some were recently re-registered to the usual Irish one.

The Pope travels in the first class/business class cabin, where a bed is usually added for long haul flights. He usually goes to the Y or Y+ cabins to hold a press conference or an off the record chat with the press corps that travel with him on the Vatican charter.

DL is 3 x daily this summer, AA adding a second flight between July and August, and UA added a second daily flight in 2022 that will be back this year and extended through to October. Norse Atlantic also launching JFK-FCO, or re-launching, depending on one's point of view. So all in all, NY Area to FCO at peak will be 11 Daily Flights.

Wow, that is absolutely colossal.
I remember sometime around the late '80s there were something like 3 daily flights, one PA, one TW and one AZ (albeit, all flown by 747s). How things have changed!

Yup. TWA 840, AZ 611, and PA 110 were the flight numbers from JFK to FCO. The AZ and TW flights usually departed between 6pm and 6:45pm. The PA flight, I don't remember exactly.

The aircraft flying the Summer 2023 frequencies are:

DL (B767-300ER, A330-300) JFK
UA (B787-10, B777-200ER) EWR
AA (B777-200ER) JFK
AZ (A350-900, A330-200) JFK
Norse Atlantic (B787-9) JFK

Yep man, TW 840, PA 110 (...also via Nice sometimes??) and of course AZ 610. Good memories.
Also, the occasional Tower Air 747....

Back to ITA...someone knows which rotations are to operate the new A350 to JFK?

Just a general comment here, but I flew ITA last week LHR-FCO. I was surprised to see the cabin crew still wearing their old Alitalia uniforms, not that I'm complaining. They were very friendly and welcoming. Flight was great. I'd love to see the Alitalia name be re-adopted, but the blue livery is great.

AZ 609/608 will be flown on the 359. The other two flights on the 332.

A lot of ground staff also continue to wear the AZ uniform and plenty of service items on board are also still branded as AZ.

Rumor is that LH wants to revive the AZ brand, though what that means exactly remains to be seen. The ITA blue livery is gorgeous. The logo for ITA, not so much.
