Simple, they don't really need to. At least to LAS, the competition is two airlines that charge for everything and occasionally drop the route for a few weeks, and they only fly redeyes eastbound. Even if 25% of AA's passengers (the average for CLT as of a few years ago) are O&D, some of the ULCC passengers wouldn't have booked if not for those options in the first place.

A2, A4, A6, A8, A10, and A12 will be AA by end of next month and will pick up 7 more when DL moves to A North. They use like 100 out of 116(estimate) gates at CLT. Right now LCCs have an opportunity because AA might not be able to flood a competitors route as they have done in the past.
They don't need any extra gates, all they need to do is lower fares to cheaper than the competition. They have a ton of flights on a lot of routes. See why JetBlue couldn't make Florida work (US sent down widebodies with cheap O&D fares that still made money because of the connections). When Spirit and Frontier arrived they only responded by offering basic economy, not a huge discount like they have in the past (they did the same to WN in PHL).
