For Southwest Baggage claim expansion

Special facility bonds 60 mil. Airport sells bonds. Southwest pays full cost

Pays any increased rent that occurs. If southwest ceases to occupy they will pay it off in 18 months (Ie if it isn't paid off when they move to new terminal).

Larger footprint 11K sq ft.

More back of house operations.

30% design review due next Friday.

Timeline: Ready for occupation late 2025. Back of the house likely sooner.

No new rendering shown...

The idea that Southwest knows this is going to be in use less than a decade and all the way to the top level said they want this, and an expanded version from the original is great to see.

Link to original design back in 2018. This one is will be 500 sq ft bigger than the original design and cost about 3x as much (I think a lot of that is due to increases costs)

This also makes me wonder if WN would need additional gates in the not to distant future.

Wouldn't take much to get them online. I was in D a couple months ago. The next section already has a makeshift wall up. It already has the tile and I think the carpet walls had been changed also. Just needs some paint to change some red to blue to match the E gates. It also has retail/restaurant space, with a bar, which would be nice to have down there. Throw in a fast casual or something.

I had heard late 2019 they were getting ready to put in more gates. Someone told me they had seen the plans, I can't verify but I don't have any reason not to believe them. I don't know if the wall up was the start of that or not but it is in the spot where you would move the wall to. I assume covid killed it, just like the baggage claim, so maybe we will hear word of more gates soon. Especially since they are going to be back at record levels of flights late summer/fall now. That would put WN at 20 or 21 gates, depending on if they add 3 or 4, and should be enough to get them through until the new terminal.

Just arrived on LH448 yesterday on a probably %80 full flight (anecdotally) The customs area seemed just to fit most of that plane, but could see how crowded it would get if flights from Mexico were to arrive. The bags did indeed come out in the customs area, and it was nice to take the front door our and down there stairs to ground transport. Less hassle than taking the long hallway to T2 baggage claim.
It would be interesting to know the onward connection percentage on UA or Southwest for that matter.

Now I am curious...is Lufthansa also using Terminal 2 Baggage Claim...and where?

I still can't believe SWA operated Terminal 2 with just 2 Carousels.

Alex

They would be using the baggage claim in customs

They have mentioned the UA number before. I think it was around 5 people a flight.

That's interesting. It would give the airport some additional concession rent as well as give WN more gates. With the heavier use of the FIS gates this would also give WN some more elbow room. I was in STL in early February and WN had a couple of planes parked down D, I'm guessing just due to space constraints until they could be towed to a gate for their next flight.

I know the fall schedule Southwest will peak at 129 daily. Do you know what the summer peak will be?

Original July schedule was

Friday 115
Saturday 104
Sunday 125

So now Friday is at least 116 with the SAN add.

I haven’t gone back thru it since the initial release.

Based off what some others have said on this thread, it seems STL-FRA is doing decent? Don’t think anyone had that high of expectations for it so is it fair to say it is doing better than expected?

Seems like the load is at least decent, anyone have any insight into what the yields are?

Last numbers posted here from jshank
LH FRA 89.5% - September
LH FRA 90.5% - August
LH FRA 91% - July

I had no doubt it would do well here. Having flown the route twice, it was at/near full. It is a great gateway, great price/service without having to screw with ORD, PHL, CLT, on any of the legacy US carriers.

October numbers will be released tomorrow.
The airport said November was 81% but their numbers haven't been matching up with the reported numbers so take that with a grain of salt. Although that sounds like it would be about right for November.

I haven't seen yield data. I am not sure that data for international gets put out in the open, but based on ticket prices I would think they are at least decent.

Today is the last day of it, and I doubt it comes back. The times were terrible, as they were for MIA also. Midnight arrivals in Florida. Cuts back on you taking the family on those flights.

Atlanta actually did better than I thought it would. We will see if they replace those three with anything.

Thanks for posting these numbers for LH, is there a breakdown of the premium cabins you are able to provide? It is my understanding that the J cabin from STL does quite well with the 42 seats offered, and noticed that both AUS and DFW both upgauge to the 789 by June even though there are only 28 J seats on the Boeing.

Any chance STL could see the 789 at some point?

I don’t have a breakdown but first is sold out fairly often when I do dummy bookings.

Not sure I really see them changing to a plane with less business class if it is selling out. But I don’t have any insight to what they are thinking.

The closest comparison to the A330 as far as seats go for business is the A350 configured with 48, and that's not including the A340-600 that has first class seats as well.

Went over to BLV yesterday to see the progress on the terminal expansion. We are 2 months out from opening of the expansion. It is going to be really nice and really needed. The new seating options are great, lots of power outlets. A lot of natural light makes the space friendly to be in. They are redoing the check in counter area to have a belt behind it like most airports for bags, no more pulling your bag over to the scanner. They are redoing the back of the house to have office space for G4 if they make it a base (fingers crossed). The new security will be much better. Concessions is also under construction and will have a window to sell on land side also. Really liked the glass jetway door for some reason. Nursing room and pet relief areas being added also.

FIS construction should start soon in anticipation of Viva Aerobus coming in. They are enlarging the apron for more parking space.
Work has started landslide to match the new to the old. It will happen airside once the expansion opens

New layout. Grey areas will be expanded apron

Granted this is anecdotal, but business was totally sold out on my outbound Nov 30 flight, and all but 1 seat occupied on the inbound on Dec 11. I was pleasantly surprised.

Seems like when I check business/premium economy they usually are sold out or close to sold out.

Have done this route twice, one personal and other for business. Did business class and was very happy with it and it was full on all four flights. Worth the extra money/points for sure. Looking forward to another journey in a few months.

We took the train to MUC from FRA which was fun but apparently they serve THIS in biz and first on flights to MUC!

I'll be on 448 tomorrow, currently in my hotel room at the FRA Marriott after a couple weeks in Europe.

I'm really glad to see it seems to be doing well and hopefully will stick around long term. Being able to get home without having to go through ORD or some other hellhole is a godsend.

I just wish they'd put up some permanent signage at the T2 checkin counter, that banner makes it look like it's for a temporary, one-off charter or something. Doesn't exactly instill confidence in the longevity of the route.

Hey now. No need to make a big investment like a sign when the new terminal will be open for them in 7 or 8 years. :rotfl:

DOT has officially released their bid award for Contour for IRK, MWA and OWB.

All Contour's flights will begin August 1st with Chicago services from IRK and MWA, and Charlotte services from OWB.

In the Midwest, Contour will now be serving TBN, IRK, MWA, CGI, PAH, OWB, BNA and ORD

July 31st, 2023 will be the last day of Cape Air Operations for STL and BNA, ending over 10 years of service to STL.

Cape Air took over a failing Great Lakes in 2009, and played a huge part in getting these airports back to 10K enplanements, and I know these communities have so much to thank Cape Air for. It is because of Cape Air, these communities have grown and in some of those other cities moved on to other hubs, jet service and connection to large hubs.

For airports like IRK and MWA and OWB, this will be the end of STL service going back to the 1970's if not earlier thanks to the Ozark/TWA Hub...MWA itself has had service to STL consistently since 1950's.

I have many memories flying MWA-STL on Trans World Express, American Connection, Great Lakes, and Cape Air. Friends and Family can recall flying Air Illinois out of Carbondale, and Britt Airways, and Ozark to STL from MWA.

I personally have flown Cape Air 108 times in and out of STL to/from Marion, according to my records, I have flown MWA-STL 66 times...

My best to the Cape Air folks in STL, you have served the STL Community wonderfully for the last 10+ Years, it was always a highlight to see you guys as I connected through STL.

That really sucks, but I get the why using ORD and CLT could be easier for these cities. Easy connections to basically anywhere you want versus a stop in STL/BNA. OWB was a great weekend getaway for a cheap price on Cape. Great little downtown with some amazing restaurants and bars.

Damn. Worked at Cape for a year and a half here at STL. Never thought this would happe this quickly. The pilot shortage has really hit them hard.

I'm sure the Contour cities are happy about ORD and CLT though. I saw a lot of double connections on 9K interlines with American (stuff like SAT-DFW-STL-IRK and RDU-PHL-STL-MWA). The enhanced connectivity will be a boon overall.

Cape, due to being short on pilots, not being able to bid on all the routes skywest dropped really hurt them. I think they could have picked up a handful.

Maps-Are you still there or did you leave prior? You and the many others at Cape Air in STL have been part of my journey flying in and out of MWA through STL to beyond (usually flying to ORD). I have become friends with some of you guys outside of the airport and have kept in continued touch.

The lack of double connecting will help quite a bit, however a lot of folks would fly MWA-STL and simply take Southwest even if that meant having to recheck their bags. I heard it was a lot of passengers flying up just to take Southwest. For those flying to Chicago like me, having a non stop will help save on the travel time which took 3-4 hours.

Agreed, shoot depending on the range they could have offered more Chicago to be competitive. They had the chance to go for TBN, CGI, PAH, along with the currents, MWA, IRK and OWB.

I wonder if this will change how Cape Air deals with the new Tecnam Planes...then again they still need to replace those C402's.

There are some markets with higher PDEW's out of STL in Q3 2022 than BOI-STL that don't currently have any nonstop service out of STL/BLV such as ALB, BUF, BDL, ORF/PHF, PWM, RNO, RIC, and GEG.

The lack of daily STL-PDX nonstop service is the biggest hole in the STL market as the PDEW of STL-PDX was 102 passengers/day in Q3 2022.

There is also more than enough demand for the return of daily nonstop service to PDX from STL on WN with the amount of O&D demand that is there between STL and PDX along with the amount of connecting traffic that WN would have on the STL end of the STL-PDX route.

There are also only a handful of markets east of the Mississippi River that have both daily WN nonstop service to STL and daily nonstop service to PDX on another airline, including ATL, BOS, CLT, CHI, DTW, NYC, MCO, and WAS.

STL isn't on their Wishlist, it is for BOI.

Hence the point of Jshank's post.

I know it says Southwest, but I would be willing to bet Alaska could fly an E175 STL-BOI to test the demand, and still offer BOI connections beyond, but it could hit their STL-SEA.

Southwest does seem the most reasonable.

This would be a longshot. Even TWA didn't do BOI-STL

Interesting on Boise. I would think SWA would be a long shot as I would put (hear come the groans!) Chicago Midway going non-seasonal, Kansas City or our favorite, Nashville would come first.

Nashville I agree with, especially since they are on the near term wish list. I'd think on WN STL would still come before MCI. Quite a bit bigger station so more connections, especially to the east, when neither has much O&D (30s each way a day). Plus, they actually want a flight to STL, no mention of them wanting MCI.

LAS goes away on Allegiant from BLV?
That's interesting. Is this the first time that's happened since BLV resumed years ago?

It was seasonal a few years ago also. Took breaks in fall for a couple years. But not this early. Allegiant has been cutting back long routes in favor of short ones so this might be part of that. Go on break until workforce, other factors, improve. I’d guess up becoming a base would help also.

It seems as though Allegiant has been less reliant and 'hot and heavy' on LAS in the past couple of years. Not just at BLV but a few other stations.

A few things
1 - They've clearly the spread the love and are offering more destinations for more people - so the appeal/need for Vegas dwindles as interest and vacation plans are made to other destinations.

2 - A part of it, I believe, is with all the new casino and resort builds in Vegas - the base cost of a Vegas vacation has substantially increased.

:o Good size also. I would love to see some other updates in T2. New digital screens, etc to make it feel a little newer or up to date. But this is a start.

Do you care if I steal this pic to post on twitter? I can credit you.
