QF164 diverting to CFS (Coffs Harbour) according to flightradar24. I note the last flight there was 4pm local time, would anyone even be there to assist with the divert?

Thanks for the update, was hard to predict where the QF Tasman’s are diverting. The QF28 opting to divert to NTL indicates they were low on fuel otherwise BNE would’ve been the better option.

Interested to know why Brisbane would be better. It's a storm and it will pass and it's nowhere near curfew. It'll be a 15 minute jaunt down to SYD.

You need to take into account the crew tour of duty hours. Easier to recover passengers from BNE or MEL than NTL.

Fair enough but how many 787 crew do they have hanging around Brisbane?

You also need to remember that flights like the long-haul flights, and particularly the NZ flights on the 737 are limited in how much fuel they can upload without busting one of their weight limitations.

Similar with QF164 CFS-SYD, meant to have gone an hour ago. Must be have to do some kind of refuel in this situation or just flight planning with ATC etc?

Interesting to see if any dispensations are granted with QR908 enroute.

I'd have expected that QF would have arranged a pair of pilots in a car to NTL as soon as they knew it was heading there.

The ME3 are always prepared to pay the fine opposed to arranging accommodation for 500+ pax…

Curfew should be waved in these circumstances to minimise disruption but we know that won’t happen.

Hopefully SWZ will help in situations like these.

The ownership structure of 3K was problematic, but to be fair, QF has had a number of financial issues over the past 15 years that they didn’t have the capital to really push the brand to scale.

RedQ was the way to go. Targeting the rising middle-upper class across Asia would have made more sense.

It was better with the Sing Govt Authority than Westbrook, but reality is Singapore Airlines (and it's Scoot Effective sub) are always the priority in that market.

At some point QF will have 321s to secondary markets like Phuket, Manilla, Ho Chi Minh etc. Though suspect 3K may still have a role (even with the forced move to T4)

One of those albino VA 73G’s NHW returned to PER yesterday after suffering an engine failure evening whilst operating VA471 to BNE, will no doubt be on the ground here for a while whilst a replacement engine is sourced and transported across to WA.

Also CI52 SYD-TPE departed about 2330

QF103 to HNL has been delayed to 1330 Sunday, according to QF's flight status

Update on Jetstar's next A321LR's

OFS had its second test flight on 14 Feb, would think this would be delivered of the month
OFU had engines installed after painting and was spotted on 8 Feb, would think this isnt too far away from flight testing
OFV rolled out of final assembly on the 11 February

Honestly a real shame, it gave a lot of reach to QF and really make SIN into a hub that not many other airlines have overseas in this day and age.

That being said with Scoot constantly rising, Airasia and all the other lowcost airlines in the region from T’way, Zipair, GBA, Vietjet etc its increasingly harder for them to compete for a pie that whilst growing again had shrunk so much due to covid.

For SIN based QFFs it was great to have lounge access and I always had a soft spot for the OKA route as it allowed through ticketing to KIX and NRT with Jetstar japan.

Part of SGN being dropped is maybe also due to the demise of Jetstar pacific.

Agreed, although the market and QF have changed so much since its establishment. Consider that within a few years after its establishment, QF were routing daily SYD-SIN-LHR, MEL-SIN-LHR and SYD-FRA-FRA through SIN, supplementing it with connecting PER-SIN, BNE-SIN and ADL-SIN. JQ were also feeding CNS-SIN, DRW-SIN, MEL-SIN and PER-SIN. In addition, BNE extended onto BOM! So SIN was in a good position to feed to and from additional regional routes, and advance from being a scissor hub.

But the world and market changed entirely. They dropped FRA and switched LHR flights to DXB. The ADL flight and extension to BOM was dropped. Scaled up SYD-CGK and SYD-MNL over time. All this reduced the critical mass and couldn't be supplemented by connecting traffic from third party airlines which they had less control of capacity and revenue management.

A point you highlight is that 3K was never able to build a legitimately independent low cost operation that could compete. Like Scoot (and Tiger) they could not really compete with AirAsia, Lion, Batik Air, Cebu Pacific, IndiGo, VietJet Air, etc who will always beat Scoot, Tiger and Jetstar Asia on cost structure. Even SQ folded Tiger into Scoot, and Scoot has been a mechanism for SQ to shift its own cost base.

QF had an opportunity to set up SIN as a secondary hub but unfortunately lost the opportunity though, admittedly, it wasn't all their fault.. SIN was even encouraging it at one stage and wasn't really protecting SQ with a completely Open Skies policy.

RedQ was the initial strategy but it was doomed from the start as SQ would have always moved to crush a full-service carrier on its own turf. 3K was a logical vehicle but the ownership structure meant it was always under-invested. SQ also responded aggressively pouring resources into Scoot with both new 787 and A320NEOs acquired. In 2018, the QF SIN Scissor Hub strategy further fell apart when 9W went under and QF has never really satisfactorily filled the gap that left them with.

What is left is not without some use though it doesn't seem any of the owners are particularly interested and the forced move to T4 so Scoot can occupy the space in T1 seems to suggest that SIN has decided to side with the home-team.

I do agree the forced move to T4 is unfortunate and does show priority to the SQ group. Does 3K still codeshare with EK, and a couple of others?

I think Jetstar Hong Kong, and Vietnam distracted QF they should have solidified Singapore, along with the 330s based up there although tbf 3K was profitable for a few years, and Jet Star Japan seems to be doing well. I do wonder once things stabilise we’ll see them grow again. There is a lot of money to be more easily made in Australia at the moment, so easier to send the 320s off to WA for guaranteed returns than risk in Asia.

I wonder how the locals Singaporean markets judges the 3K brand and link with QF ff scheme? For markets outside of Singapore I do think more 321XLR flying P2P from both JQ and QF will help the Au market - inter Asia I suspect no brand loyalty in the LCC space, who ever is cheapest wins!

Whatever happened to the agreement signed between Jetstar and Air Asia for odd partnership?

Did it overnight? Would have been a nightmare for customs clearance etc - would have had to wait for ABF to come from the port.. not sure that was the best call. Wonder if they overnight pax in NTL or bused them to SYD. CBR probs would have been a better call!

Yup! From my memory past life 200-300k per year for the ability to file as an alternate, plus the fees for use if you drop in. My carrier at the time wouldn’t pay, so never held CBR as an alternate UA clearly does, so must be some fuel savings in being able to file for CBR as an alternate over MEL/BNE. From an environmental perspective wonder how much extra fuel carriers are carrying around using SYD,MEL as alternates when they could use CBR?

I’m sorry but the ACCC should have a look at CBR - family owned airport, and charges for everything! GHA have to pay a rental fee for GSE parking on the apron- on top of the normal office rentals, staff parking, checkin fees etc. Be interesting to see CBR traffic if they didn’t charge as much! I did hear that’s of the top 10 most expensive airports in the world - Australia has 5 in the list. Not sure if this is still true or accurate.

Certainly did and as previously mentioned MEL/BNE would’ve been a better alternate but I suspect limited fuel was the reason for NTL diversion.

United has long had CBR as an alternate. Both the 747-422s and 777-222ERs came up slightly short on payload/range, especially with winter headwinds, and having a closer alternate did have a material impact on the payload they could carry. Presumably the cost was therefore worth it.

Delta also started using CBR as an alternate for the same reason when they switched to the A359, as their A350s (or at least the early deliveries) had a fairly low MTOW. I think they’ve all been increased now so not sure if they still use CBR.

There is an article in the SMH about it. They say on the plane until 2am when they were let off and spent the rest of the night in the terminal. They got given Macca's. Lucky there is one within a few minutes of the airport lol.

Pretty awful experience after a 14 hour flight.

Not a pleasant experience but sometimes there's not much more they can do in these circumstances

Is it too much to read into the situation that the fuel might have been that critical on this flight that they had to land in NTL instead of at CBR where they would have far better airport facilities for such a situation?

It might be about time NTL became better equipped to deal with situations like this though. Not the first time a widebody has been diverted to NTL. Last year passengers on an a330 sat on the taxi way over by the RAAF for 5 hours. NTL didn't have the stairs to reach the aircraft and ended up having to approach the RAAF for help.

NTL preaches about becoming a new International gateway to the Hunter. Investments have been made for the runway/taxi way upgrades etc. Now it's time to train staff (and/or contracted ground handlers) in operating equipment for widebodies and invest in it. It's not the last time NTL will be used as an alternate.

In addition, the storm was coming from the south-west, so they may had to use extra fuel to fly around the storm in order to reach CBR - fuel they perhaps didn't have. But that's just speculation on my part.

Well there you go, of all the diversions yesterday the QF28 was definitely going to be the one to watch out for and it certainly hit the news headlines!

Re CBR, QF sent the Hawaii and Tonga flights there so I doubt CBR access is the issue.

I do fond this interesting. Seeing AJ was saying Perth airport was stopping expansion, tho some of these aircraft could be used.

Doesn't Jetstar fly from Terminal 1 at Perth? So none of these are being used into South-East asia? Including say Jakarta which they couldn't get up an running with QF.
Just saying.

Qantas is commencing MEL-CGK services which means their seat allocation would be exhausted once launched.
