FLL: New International Carrier Coming

Tue Jan 31, 2023 8:23 pm

According to the monthly email newsletter sent out by FLL today, the airport "anticipates sharing some big news on the arrival of a new international carrier soon." (Source: https://www.broward.org/Airport/Busines ... 023_ac.pdf)

Could it be QR? I don’t know, I’m throwing guesses based on how EK left the market not too long ago.

Qatar has been flying to the South Florida airport with Intercontinental Infrastructure, Emirates moved there for the same reason. Highly doubtful Qatar would fly to FLL when MIA is 30 miles down I-95. Qatar has been at MIA for years.

Another reason Emirates moved was the yields at FLL were lower than their other US gateways. FLL makes sense for an airline like Condor or French Bee.

I'm thinking smaller. Perhaps Arajet from the D.R. or another smaller Caribbean carrier.

If were talking long haul carriers, if its not at MIA there isnt much chance itll show up at FLL unless its a charter.

has Wingo applied for US authority yet? I wonder if they'd try to link Bogata/Medellin with FLL?

That was my thought as well:
- as this would be a high demand route for Arajet (and with their business model, could really feed connecting passengers with a fantastic option)
- it would fit with their recent expansion drive (and/or providing some of their higher yields that they might need to add soon on the O/D, apart from filling the aircraft with connecting passengers).
- it would allow South Florida access, at decent costs (versus MIA).
- it is a decent aircraft utilization route (with not needing a long stage length for the route).

MIA has worked to reduce its cost issues. This is what led to NK, WN, B6, etc. all starting ops there recently and F9 to use it as one of its hubs. I do believe when Arajet finally does start flights to the US, it would be more likely to fly to MIA than FLL.

Not to get off course, but how many airlines would that make on YYZ-MCO/SFB?

Arajet would be nice, would like to see them start US ops

Good point, I never thought of that. Seems as if others are reporting that Porter is the new airline.

Kind of a burn to MLB who had Porter for a while, albeit seasonally, with them going to MCO now. Granted now MLB has all of those TUI charters.

Do you have insider info that these are being announced tomorrow to go along with the inaugural E95 flights to YOW & YUL? Or will they be spread out over a few days/weeks like the flurry of new routes announced in December?
