Irish 2/23: Cleared takeoff and rolling ...

Wed Feb 01, 2023 5:21 am

A slightly delayed pushback this morning! Welcome one and all to our new thread and let's hope we see some more positive developments for the Summer ahead. We've seen EY announce A350s for DUB and now, the flight from NOC to LHR, a very significant boost for the NW. Let's hope 2023 is a bumper summer ...

Here's a link to the old thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1479839&start=250

A recent return to Dublin Airport after lockdown brought me to T1 for the first time in more than three years.
How shabby it looked and those long, long unassisted walks with no travelator or just brief stretches to assist the aged. Toilets not particularly clean or functioning properly. As usual, the taxi queue was slow to clear, despite plenty of vehicles in the pound waiting. Why do they not call taxis to the number of spaces when they can see clients arriving, preferring one or two at a time.

Also saw the new EI advert - gee so many empty seats ( everybody must be on FR!), allowing the kids to run up the aisles while boarding. Not as I know it.

Thanks for a new thread . Do we know how many aircraft currently have the mis matched livery on the engines? Just seems there are more then before.

I often have the same feeling in T1, and with the exception of late evening weekday departures when the terminal is more or less empty, I generally dread departing from T1 due to the overall customer experience. This is in contrast to other airports where I quite enjoy arriving early to eat and/or get some work done before the flight. The core part of the building is from another era - low ceilings, cramped gate areas (especially the octagonal 200 gates), a lack of jet bridges, crowded F&B outlets and a general feeling of wear and tear. It's ironic that the nicest part by far (the old C gates) was demolished to make way for T2.

Interestingly, I raised these points with a friend who recently moved back to Ireland after a decade living overseas. Her point of view was totally different - she though it was great to have the Ryanair automatic bag-tagging (saves so much time!), professional/friendly security personnel, good craic in the bars and the use of boarding stairs means you get off the flight twice as fast! As airport experiences go, she felt, it's perfectly fine. Ultimately it's a matter of perspective!

I fly through T1 all the time and there's nothing wrong with it. Fast-Track security is always blindingly quick and the facilities are totally adequate. It appears busier than T2, but that's because a lot of the T2 passengers are out of side downstairs in pre-clearance or those gates after pre-clearance.

I think Dublin Airport does a great job actually. It's certainly a much more convenient airport to get through than many, many others. Plus the staff are usually in good humour as well, which is a make or break in a lot of respects.

I don't know (and I suspect the only people who really care about this are to be found on internet forums  ). However as more aircraft are being repainted (EI-DEF and 'DEL done in January, EI-DVJ in the paintshop at SNN this week), the problem should resolve itself, I imagine.

It’s improved recently, all the new livery A333s had been corrected last year but G-EILA came back from winter maintenance with a white inboard cowling, not very noticeable at least.

On the narrowbody fleet, almost every single A320ceo featured some form of mixed cowling. A few in the new livery have been matched up again but worth looking out for winglets now, EI-EDS and EI-EIM both have grey replacements!

NOC-LHR should be a great addition for the region. In ways its a shame to loose the connection to LGW but one would take away from the other, I’d be fairly sure.
While this is NOC’s gain, there has been a loss for BHD. BA do appear to be taking up the slack, 7x daily to LHR and 4x daily to LCY. But it is worth remembering the BHD based crews and station staff (if EI had any) who will be looking for new opportunities. Emerald might be a good opportunity for these folks, if they don’t want to move to DUB.
Interesting that the NOC instagram posts are pushing the connections onwards to the USA. In the earlier thread we were talking about Asia. The NOC social media hasn’t even mentioned Asia. I guess that demonstrates the major markets for Irish airports.
Best of luck to everyone and BHD and at NOC.

Are you talking about MAN or DUB? Both airports have similar issues with the aging infrastructure, but high proportion of LCC’s who dont want to pay anything more the the bare minimum to keep the lights on.

BA are selling connections ex. NOC to destinations all over via LHR (i.e. Europe, Asia, Africa), not just to the to the US. Great to have the increased connectivity available.

I think most would agree that DUB T1 ain’t pretty, but I generally find it functional and efficient. I think it’s worth remembering that T1 is primarily 1960s / 1970s infrastructure that has been expanded in a very piecemeal fashion over the space of 40+ years which brings inevitable limitations in terms of flow and layout.

The terminal handled circa. 18m passengers in 2019 which is more than the entire traffic of airports like LTN, EDI, and BHX. All things considered, it serves its purpose reasonably well despite being in need of some TLC. I can think of countless airports I would rank below it, including many in the UK.

I find the 300 gates to be particularly user-friendly. When I fly LH, I always appreciate the short walk to/from the gate. There are few large airports that offer such a quick exit and you can be from plane to taxi / bus in the space of 7-8 mins.

I noticed today that United are offering connections via LHR to NOC on United.com in addition.

Great add for the west.

After more than a year at Lasham, VP-CBS ex EI--CPE began the trip to Singapore yesterday, for conversion to a freighter.

The other two remain waiting at Lasham

Yes I would agree. It’s not difficult to get through but I’d never call it easy on the eye. It has however gotten a little worn and grubby and could do with some investment from the DAA. The only structural limitation that I really have an issue with is the lack of gates with jet bridges leading to the use of that awful temporary thing in T2. Overall though I’d never describe DUB as unpleasant to fly out of by any stretch.

I have commenced my cheapskate express trip to Australia, First leg on EI154 DUB-LHR on the 321LR, pleasant experience however a few niggles include cloth seats starting to look tired, crumbs on some seats and my cheese and ham toasty was not entirely heated.
Would not hesitate to use them on longer haul routes, as the IFE looks decent and the seats at the moment are quite comfortable. However on a full flight that could be a different story.
The rest of the trip LHR - ATH on Ba, ATH-SIN-PER on Scoot.... ironically the shortest leg has the most comfortable aircraft!

Will be back in Ireland 2025 or later so will be interesting to see what aviation developments arise.

Take care folks!

Nice routing . Good luck with your time away. Maybe when you come back it could be TK OZ - IST - DUB. If they start there would be some keen fares.

Noise complaints at Dublin Airport.
Who knew that the A32Xs of Aer LIngus and 737-8s of Ryanair could be so noisy because they are the majority of what is going in and out of DUB. The widebodies to North America leave during the morning when a faint noise from a distant plane is drowned out by vehicular comings and goings and construction work.
AS the number of complaints is far in excess of the number of complainants I would suggest that some of the complainants have fragile nerves or submitting complaints vexatiously.

Same as last year, 89% of complaints are from one person, presumably the guy in Ongar. Ongar didn't exist when 28 was built, so he's complaing about a runway that's been there longer than his house

Serious expansion out of BHD by EIR with EMA and NCL being added and frequency bumps on other routes. Good to see the gaps being filled quickly, although I say this had been planned for.

I see EIR also launched their own catering unit today. Whole operation seems to be going from strength to strength which is great to see.

They must surely be taking in more ATR’s?

Absolutely EVERYONE knew that Ongar was on the flight path. Air Traffic Control weren't trying to hide those flights from prospective purchasers of property in Ongar.
Anyone flying out of Dublin would have seen Blanch below them as they flew out on their trips.
There can be no excuses.
Now there are more flights but the flights are quieter than they used to be.

I’m out in the Ongar area, I’ve noticed a serious decline in aviation noise since the new runway opened. So if that complainant is still constantly making complaints he’s making himself out to be even more of a laughing stock!

Is EMA the first Belfast destination not served from Dublin?

The demand for regional services is big - wonder if Emerald are looking at larger aircraft at all.

Aer Lingus Regional operator Emerald Airlines says it could consider relaunching Cork Airport to Bristol flights following pressure locally.

A petition calling for the restoration of the Cork-Bristol service operated by previous Aer Lingus franchise holder, Stobart Air, has gathered more than 700 signatures. Asked if it planned relaunching the service, Emerald Airlines indicated that it would consider the move.

I’m surprised FR don’t fly BRS-ORK, they fly
NOC-BRS. I’m sure they will if emerald announce anything.

BRS would be a great return for Cork and signal the return of EIR as well.
I don’t think FR have ever operated ORK-BRS. A variety of names over the years have though. AirWales and bmiBaby in my memory. But ima sure there have been many more besides RE.

I completely agree, but the DAA tend to pay lip service to their customers, rather than actually listen to us. Sometimes I feel I'm in an abusive relationship

Drone activity causing havoc at DUB this evening, all seems fine now. EK was diverting to MAN but heading back towards Dublin now. Ryanair from LGW & GLA heading towards SNN, few more holding over the Irish Sea.

Flew back ACE - DUB with EI. Flight 95% full some new recruits were working the flight. Very friendly and were visible in the cabin for most of the flight.
Shortly after row 7 however they announced all hot food had been sold and apologised for the inconvenience . Wonder if they will ever bring back
pre order . Usual chaos at check in at ACE courtesy of Avia partners. Priority desk was being used by everyone and not policed.

Good for spotting though by the looks of it ;)

They should embrace and boast their convenient location to the airport.... although Kantarat Golf Club in Bangkok is practically unbeatable!

Great start in Athens, check in for scoot was quick and efficient as I only needed my passport and declare I had a visa for Australia. My passport was rejected at the border control scanner but cleared by staff ,same happened inbound flight no explanations to why.
Security is dated and could do with an upgrade, lucky for me it was quiet.

Regarding my return journey I will be spoilt for choice! Probably would be drawn to A380 operators but if budget is tight il be flying with the best deal.... or the wildcard that is Fly Atlantic :duck:

A disgruntled north Dublin resident perhaps, trying to protest the new runway? Hopefully they throw the book at them for causing such disruption.

Is EI publishing an inflight magazine these days? I know Cara was put on ice over Covid - but has it been re-introduced since?

No and maybe wrong but I don't see it coming back in paper form unless I missed something. Certainly none on this mornings 154 to LHR .

On another note I got the breakfast this morning and they have added black pudding .

Thanks - that's a shame. Most of the major European airlines still publish them, IIRC. It doesn't even seem to be in digital form, as per the website.

Also - seemingly no more in-flight duty free being offered - is that true? The website's link to the boutique magazine simply links you to the Bia menu.

Looks like a good meal you had there - speaking of which, is there any plan to re-introduce the ability to upgrade your meal on trans-Atlantic flights?

Such a shame that all these pandemic moves are being carried over into the 'new normal'/post-Covid era. But I understand the cost implications ...

They still sell duty free and do an announcement after the Bia service has finished. On my ACE flight last week they made a point of listing off various perfumes for €20 and cigarettes for €50 and saying that JPB were not available in the Canaries so best to buy off them ! They also had various bottles of spirits and Aer Lingus logo gifts. There were a few catalogues for people to browse upon request.

On todays flight to LHR they asked anyone who wanted duty free to press their call bell due to the short duration of the flight.

As for upgrade of Y meal I agree its a shame its gone. The steak meal was very popular.

I think the company that produced the Cara magazine for EI went out of business during the pandemic.

Surely they could have found a new supplier though - like that of fellow IAG carriers BA and/or IB?

The aircraft had been converted to a freighter at Miami, so this was its ferry flight back to Egypt.

Aer Lingus had previously stated that Cara would be back in digital form but that was months ago and based on the glacial pace that the airline seems to move, it’ll either be still years away or never happen at all.

A shame as it was always one of the better inflight magazines.

I think brining back physical on board menus is more important, most passengers still don’t know it’s online and the crew end up trying to list off what they have available. Even when passengers do find it online, it’s an out of date version, as seen on the app.

Judging by the bizarre sealing of seatback pockets that seems to be going on on the short haul fleet I doubt anything in paper form is coming back. I wish they’d take this opportunity to do pre order meals but it is EI we are talking about, leading in innovation and customer service as always.

They could always do what Ryanair does and simply hand out menus to those who want them. They’re definitively about a decade behind everyone else when it comes to preordering.

I didn’t see it mentioned here but flights between DUB - TLL (Tallinn) with Ryanair are ending
