Air NZ used 10xx as the special flight number for it's China cargo only flights.

Did we ever find out what happened?

Well it was quite foggy last night, so that may explain some of the delays and diversions, but not the JQ return though....

Hi Everyone, does anyone know what's wrong with VH-VGO which was operating JQ203 when it returned to SYD as above? It's been grounded since the above mentioned incident. Keen to hear if it was an issue with the no2 engine or any other issues? Cheers!

19 MAR 23 - VH-VGO operating flight JQ203 SYD-AKL declared a Pan Pan shortly after take off reporting hydraulic failure and landing gear remaining down. Fuel 10.3t, POB 171 the flight crew ran checklists for 20 mins before landing on RWY 16R without incident. The plane has been on the ground since the event.

Incidentally, I was pax on this aircraft earlier that day.

That would be a good example to use in simulator training checks: hydraulic failure, gear unable to be retracted (likely related to HYD failure), overweight landing, low cloud base, and reduced visibility.

Spare a thought for the passengers on VA161 SYD-ZQN today. Aircraft diverted to CHC due to weather, then returned to ZQN for another go but couldn’t make it so diverted all the way back to SYD. 11 hours in the plane just to return all the way back to SYD!

Wow - that’s bad! I get they want to get the aircraft back to SYD, but should have gone back to CHC and left pax there.

Agree - should of paxed pax from CHC rather than send them back to SYD!

I would what would have been cheaper? Putting everyone in hotels? Or sending the aircraft back empty, resulting in a lower fuel load?

Any updates concerning ex-VA VH-VPD which diverted DRW enroute to DOH on the 17th of February?

Check out playback of VH-VPD on Flightradar24. https://fr24.com/data/aircraft/vh-vpd#2f3a0770

VPD was supposed to be going to QR, but with QR's issues with the A350s largely resolved, another question is what will the new lessor owner of VPD chose to do with the aircraft if QR doesn't take it up.

The plane was on the ground for an hour and a half in CHC - surely they let the passengers deplane before the aircraft positioned to ZQN?

How much longer before this bird re-enters commerical service?

Yeh I flew out of DRW last week and wondered what it was doing there - couldn't find any info online. Its parked at stand 1 (looks impressive), but taking up a valuable aerobridge. Stand 3 is currently being resurfaced so DRW is down to three usable aerobridges. I wonder why it wasn't towed and stored away from the terminal, but maybe there's not enough space.

I guess the mechanic is the problem but this weekend UA 100 will stop flying between SYD-IAH until October. I dont know why UA screwed up the schedule and I checked UA.com load for SYD-IAH and back is very high and why UA will close this weekend until october? Look at QF still flying to DFW and still beat UA for SYD-IAH.

Better places to send the plane. It's a long, expensive route in the off-season. And they'd be relying heavily on US originating passengers. Yeah QF might fly it year round but you don't see AA flying to Australia from DFW.

Maybe as the VA alliance beds down it will be different in the future.

I flew this route in November - best flight I ever had. 3 seats each to every economy passenger.

Im waiting to hear VA to order 787-9 then add MEL-IAH and UA is already cover from SFO to BNE, SYD MEL, LAX-SYD and MEL. SYD-IAH will be back in this October. DFW got MEL on QF. I hope VA happen to buy 787-9.

Last year I tried to fly from IAH to SYD but the UA reservation systems ruined my itinerary for AUS-IAH-SYD-MEL and they put me AUS-SFO-MEL, not very happy on UA reservation lied to me about the live seatmap was available and told me full is BS! I will try again for nonstop SYD to IAH for experience my longest nonstop flight.

Is SYD - IAH the longest non stop flight from Sydney at present ? It's a little longer than DFW.

She is due to retun this weekend on the SYD / HKG / SYD flights operating 7 days a week.

She is still in the old config with the skybed Mk II J seats. It will only be sold as J and Y product

Wouldn't be too sure if SYD-IAH returns in October. UA filed double-daily SYD-SFO in the GDS, and SYD is slot-restricted.
Putting questions whether if either UA is replacing IAH with the 2nd SFO or whether if UA acquired another SYD slot elsewhere.

That checks out. Just dummy booked for next month and P1's (and I assume Platinum, too) can select F seats downstairs when booking in J.

Why are they not selling Y+? Is there a significant cost associated with offering the full Y+ product if it's not selling well into Asia? Especially with the prices CX are charging...

Interesting choice they are placing it on SYD-HKG given the trouble's in HKG but I here the loads are very good. I would of thought QF could use the capacity of all the original A380 fleet... SIN and BKK are screaming out for more capacity as flights are on average in the high 90%'s LF.

I find it weird they are putting a 380 on HKG when there are other routes (ie SIN) screaming out for more capacity.

It’s because MEL-HKG got pushed back due to the staffing shortages in HKG, so they’re beefing up SYD capacity to compensate

Sydney slots won’t be a concern for United, or any new long haul flight for that matter. SYD is not LHR, and if you’re willing to be slightly flexible (taking something like 08:25 instead of 08:00, for example) you can pick up one or two slots fairly easily.

What a new entrant would struggle to do is something like 20 flights per day between SYD and MEL, on the hour with additional flights on the half-hour at peak times. Pretty much all of the ‘useful’ slots for a high-frequency domestic operation are already spoken for.

With my recent experience booking flights to China next month, it appears they are probably picking up a fair bit of China traffic transiting through HKG onto Cathay.

I believe China is opening up tourist visa applications again too, which will only make for more people trying to get seats to China.

Additionally, UA was already running 4x flights per day to SYD in January and February (albeit only 3x per week, the other 4 days being 3 flights)

From what has been reported in a lot of the financial press, the Private Equity that owns Virgin are still looking to float it soon, so unless they decide to cancel this and retain ownership, I doubt we'll see any new orders for any widebodies as Virgin will want to keep its balance sheet clean from a lot of expenses.

Didn't QF state that when the A380s return they'll all return into operation with the new config? Wonder when this bird will get the upgrade

VA has commenced an unofficial roadshow in advance of a planned IPO later this year though t is still possible that Bain will defer any float due to the stock market uncertainties which were further heightened by the bank failures we saw last week. Even if they do float, it is likely Bain will only sell 25-40% of the business and save the rest for a subsequent issue or trade sale. With the sharemarket being so flaky, trying to sell too large a stake will lower the overall price achieved or result in a damaging underwriting overhang which will push the share price down.

At this stage, it is unlikely VA willbe looking to buy or lease widebodies in the next couple of years. That they kept their HND slots suggests it is still an option they are looking at but, even then, it is likely to be a very trim operation with services limited to just HND and LAX. You would expect they'd go for a fleet of about 4 789s with maintenance largely outsourced to an Asian (SQ or NH) or US (UA) partner.

I’d be very surprised if Bain were to sell VA either with an order for WBs on the books, or with plans for a new strategic direction (ie long(er) haul flights) taking effect. A new purchaser will want to be able to make their own decisions about those things, and not have a predetermined strategic direction (which they may want to change) effectively imposed on them by others.

IF VA ends up with multiple airline owners again (with Bain Capital still holding the controlling stake of 55% to 65%) after the first float in either Q4 of this year, or Q1 of 2024, it's just going to end up to be a 'history repeating' moment. Especially when you got tried and failed 'usual suspects' in SQ, which are always mentioned in the media alongside potential purchasers such as QR or UA.

It is likely that, even after the IPO, Bain will remain the largest shareholder and with a controlling stake. There has been no discussion of a trade sale in the first tranche of shares so there will not be a single purchaser and there will no one who has anything like the shareholding that Bain will retain for the time being.

In addition, any single purchaser in the IPO from overseas will likely be restricted to 19.9% stake for the time being. Any overseas shareholder could increase above 19.9%, but likely that ('Takeover') regulations will apply.

Despite your obvious disdain for SQ, it is very likely that if, after the first tranche of shares are listed, Bain decides on a trade sale for some of its remaining shares that SQ will be at or near the top of the list that Bain approaches. SQ and QR are the obvious candidates given they have deep pockets and a symbiotic relationship with VA. It is, however, unlikely that both would take shares in such a trade sale. I think SQ would recognise AAB as being too much like hard work to try and run a successful partnership.

Bit exotic for us downunder! And hopefully building a longer term market, I’d personally rather see this sort of funding to entice new and growing markets - rather than the focus on smaller Chinese cities and their vanity airlines which only fly for the subsidy and prestige, and don’t grow a strategic market.

Do LY still have their own armed security on board ? It will take the 15 months from now to work around that if they do.

AJ could always float it in the media as another potential route, which will then duly get reported, but in reality, I’d be very surprised to see QF turn up in TLV as a regular service.

I think the armed security on board is okay - as US carriers have sky marshals. Issue was previously they wanted armed guards on the tarmac during the turn… and OTS said no.

Code sharing and operating their own service are 2 different things.

Qantas won't want to offend Malaysia and Indonesia among other countries, so will only ever code share.

Also, there isn't really a huge market for 2 carriers on that route, but they may keep an eye on it and test the water in the future perhaps with JQ or a type like "Australia Asia" or even Australian Airlines could come back...

Qantas doesn’t operate to Malaysia.
Other airlines serving TLV also operate into Malaysia without any issue.

MH has got what's most of the limited high yielding market sewn up (assumably ex-Aust), whereas AirAsia/AirAsiaX has the low yielding stuff sewn up. QF's last attempt in Malaysia (SYD-KUL) was through JQ on their A330s, they lost a ton of money as D7 pretty much ran JQ off that market. The QF group now sends any Malaysian pax through SIN and connect them onto 3K flights since then.
