A320 lines up on the edge of KBGR runway—Mar 20th

Tue Mar 28, 2023 3:36 pm

The incidents keep coming. Runway excursion, or more accurately, lined up off the edge. Departed after damaging the runway edge lights.

Here's a close-up from ADS-B Exchange showing the taxi and takeoff on Runway 33 at BGR for Allegiant Air A320-214 N223NV on 03/20/2023: AAY1200

Wow...that's crazy! That runway is 200 ft wide, so there shouldn't be any excuse for a A320 to be that close to the edge, let alone the runway edge lights. The only thing that comes to mind is that they thought the lights they saw were centerline lights, but if you follow the taxi lead on line to the runway, this is very hard mistake to make...more to come, I'm sure.

Having landed there in the past, can definitely see how this could happen with the convergence of multiple unfortunate circumstances. It’s a very wide runway with very wide shoulders that messes with your perception of height and distance.

Looking at BGR on maps. It looks like BGR is the only airport I’ve seen that has the taxiway edge paints (yellow paint) go all the way to runway edge paintings (white paint) where as every other airport I looked at have the taxiway edge paint ending/starting at the actual side of the runway and the taxiway center line paint going to center ling of runway.

So I can see how it could easily become confusing.

Looking at SMF and PDX for comparison, they look the same in terms of where the yellow taxiway lines meet the runway. However, BGR's taxiway centerline to runway 33 isn't always in the middle of the taxiway and the large pad near the threshold could be confusing.

Would it not be better served by an accurate thread title.....as in naming the airline rather than, for effect, 'blaming' an A320 as if it did it all by itself?

Isn’t that sort of self explanatory. Does anyone here really seem confused about whether or not the A320 did it all by itself.

Cmon man!

It would have never happened with a B737
