Argentina's Flybondi becomes first airtline to offer NFTickets

Wed Mar 29, 2023 7:27 pm

Since yesterday, Flybondi became the first airline in the world to offer "Tickets 3.0" which rely on TravelX’s NFTickets, developed based on blockchain technology.

An NFTicket is the "tokenization" of an air ticket via blockchain technology. It is an evolution for the travel industry that aims to provide a more flexible shopping experience for travelers, new sources of revenue and reduced costs per transaction for airlines. For passengers, NFTickets ownership is with the user. In this way, tickets can be reassigned to another person once purchased. It also makes it possible for them to be easily transferred or resold to another person. Changes can be made up to 48 hours before the departure of the flight, without transfer limits, only with a payment of 5% of the value of the ticket. This new type of air ticket can also be used by travel agencies or companies that will be able to buy tickets in advance and then reassign them to different people within the organization, as they are paid for in advance.

Like with every new technology it is not free of risks. One of the concerns is the black market that could surround this idea.

As a software developer?

What a stupid idea. There's nothing that stops airlines from doing this with current systems. NFTs are a scam and that's putting it politely. The amount of energy expended to generate and validate each transaction is disgustingly high.

Blockchain has some really interesting concepts worth exploring around creating a ledger that can be validated by anyone independently. But this? This is just a fad at best.

Interesting - I have to think they've dealt with security concerns to make sure a person not permitted to fly isn't flying and that a person is properly registered, etc.

Still a better store of value than the Argentinian Peso...

Ticketmaster with airline tickets? I don’t see what the point is.

I take it Argentina does not have the same type of passenger reporting by the airlines that is done in places like the US? Or if they do have somehow arranged that this third party can report those changes properly?

Agree with my fellow software developer above - this does not seem like a worthwhile use of NFTs, just another "NFTs are cool so let's use them" type deal.
