Rex/Pelair Saab 340 Emergency Landing After Battery Fire Burns Through Floor

Sun Apr 23, 2023 6:50 am

A Rex/Pelair Saab 340 freighter performed an emergency landing after a battery compartment fire burned its way into the main cargo deck.

Definitely not pretty having a fire on board but all was managed well and the aircraft made a safe landing in Cobar.

Interesting to see photos posted so early. I guess we have the fire department to thank for two good outcomes!

Is it the plane's own battery catching fire? Or is battery being carried as cargo catching fire?

Where they’ve opened the side of the fuselage as per the photos is the battery compartment on the Saab and given the location of the damage I’d say it was A/C battery/electrical involved. The post did say had to do with a wiring harness but not much more info than that.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the Air Cycle Machine is also close to where the fire was. Perhaps an overheat of some kind that lead to a harness melting or batteries overheating?

Sorry to hear this. I've been a Saab owner for over a decade, hope they'll never blow up on me...

Weird that this fire station felt it was appropriate to share these photos on social media, really not acceptable. They should wait for the outcome of the investigation and statements to the media should go through ATSB. They certainly shouldn’t be making comments on the cause.

Had a similar experience many years ago with a Beech 1900, but fortunately, we were already on the ground. My write-up (the entry into the aircraft logbook) got me an immediate trip to HQ! That's another story, though.

They didn't make comments on the actual cause, they detailed their train of thought that lead to discovering all the burning element, able to prevent the aircraft from burning to the ground.

VH-KDK, the first SAAB 340 (MSN 16) delivered to Australia, in 1985 to Kendall. Moved to REX with the collapse of Ansett and then to freighter work with Pelair (owned by REX)
