Boeing Colors On 773

Mon May 06, 2002 2:15 pm

How come the Boeing 777-300 was never painted in the white Boeing color scheme (unlike all the other models)? It was presented in the silver scheme.

Because Boeing wanted to save money. They did it with the 747-400 too.

Why would they want to save their money. I think it would be better to paint it...so it matches...

to save money? Is that based on fact? It seems to me it would have been done for a "retro" look.

Bare-metal livery on a Boeing "house color" plane usually indicates that particular airframe is destined for a customer. The house-color 773 went straight to Cathay after testing/certification was completed. Same thing with the first 744, which went to NW, and the first 763 (forgotten who it went to). With a bare metal livery, there's a whole lot less paint to scrape off prior to painting it in the colors of the customer.

The first 767-300 built was delivered to Japan Air Lines after the certification program. I seem to recall that it had the fuselage painted white above the window level. The first 737-400 and 737-500 were also in bare-metal Boeing colors during their test-flight period.
