Explosion Reported At Grand Island Airport

Wed May 15, 2002 11:08 am

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A hangar at the municipal airport exploded Tuesday night.

Witnesses said a hangar on the north side of the airport exploded and collapsed after a fire burned in the building.

The explosion happened about 6:55 p.m. CDT. Witnesses said secondary fires were burning.

Flames and heavy smoke were visible on the roof of the hangar at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport.

Law enforcement agents blocked off many of the roads near the airport because the Grand Island Fire Department was dealing with potential hazardous materials.

Two planes with fuel in them were stored in the hangar when the fire broke out, The Grand Island Independent reported.

This must have made the front page in every paper in the Midwest. I mean, besides deadly tornadoes, what else really is there to do there besides work in the fields? Hopefully no one got hurt though...

Apparently two Beech 1900D, Great Lakes Aviation, have been destroyed in the fire. The fire broke out at one of the doors if I remember correct.

RJ777...I was kidding...
We have a family ranch about twenty five miles west of Omaha. I fly into Eppley a couple times a year when my folks are there (they live in Los Angeles).

You never know...Omaha is a fairly large town...(650,000 people?) But I can guarantee you nobody is terrorizing Grand Island (even 100,000?) I've been thru there...I have family out there...pretty much nothing in that part of the state...

GO BIG RED!

(ignoring the incredible ignorance in this post)... It may come as a shock to some people (especially people on the EAST COAST), not everyone who lives in Nebraska is a frickin farmer. I live in a cosmopolitan city of 750,000, Omaha. I don't farm, I don't know anybody who farms, I could care less about farms...EVERY state in this country has rural/ag areas, so get off your ignorant high-horse.

Terrorism can hit anywhere, nobody is immune from it. But anyway, the explosion at GRI was nothing more than a hanger fire which set off some secondary explosions. No terrorism.

LOL - Bring on the stupidity! Last time I drove thru California, I couldn't believe the amount of farms and agriculture. Same goes for New York, Illinois, Texas, yada, yada, yada. I guess everyone in L.A. and New York are farmers for living in a state with so many of them!

Oh well, I guess if I went through a typical urban, eastern school system, I would be clueless as well.  Big grin
