This will be good for qantas. Will help compete with the new SIA and Cathay business products and helps maintain a more accurate code share with BA on the Australia-LHR routes...as BA club world also has fully flat beds.

Interesting and about time too. the current business class "sux" big time..
QF are also taking First class of ten of the B747-400 aircraft. I think Paris. Joberg and Frankfurt r losing First class cabins. I think that London. Hong Kong. and L.A r the only place which will get it..

And so how long will this take them to introduce. A little like SQ who also said look at our new beds and to date none have been installed. Yes we know it will happen but when? QF does not even have inseat individual PTVs in economy yet, yes one aircraft does not mean they are installed!!!!!! BA is certainly way ahead of the competition and by the time SQ and QF and CX have done their fleets will BA have come up with something new........we can only wait and see??????

I heard during the announcement of the SQ FYR press release that the Spacebed will be launched within the next 2 weeks. Straight from Dr Cheong's mouth, it was. Installation willl take a period of 12 months, and the aircraft that will be getting it are the B744's and the 772ER's.

So yeah, we'll wait and see what they'll pull off.

So we'll have 4 big guns on the Kangaroo Route all offering flat beds in J, this is going to be interesting.

Lets put it this way,

If Qantas takes around 01 years to install PTVs in like 4 or 5 of their aircraft, I'd say they'll have the flat beds around say, 3-4 years time.

Surely you jest Tsentsan. I'm sure something like this will be put thru as fast as it is possible to get the acft off line and in the hanger. As long as its a top product it will be worth the wait.

The extra time taken for the Y class upgrades were because of the collapse of Ansett.

Aussiestu - there are currently seven aircraft with the new PTV's in Y - the Ansett collapse has them a little bit behind schedule, as they had to redeploy some of the 747's onto domestic routes (SYD-PER, MEL-PER, SYD-CNS), thus increasing the workload and thus reducing their availability to be released.

Perhaps, in jest perhaps. But I seem to think prior to the Ansett collasp, they took like 2 months for 1 aircraft....

I'm just jealous I dont get to try them ~! :-(

Well QF are getting AirNZ Engineering to do the reconfig work for them. So it should happen very quickly.

To cut down time I hear the kiwis will leave the seat track bolts out, so when the aircraft takes off everone will be down the back (saves arguments about upgrades), and on landing everyone will be up the front so they can get off first!!!

This would be a great news for Qantas as it will help them be more competitive.

ThaDocta

Thanks for the info. Had only known of one aircraft being done and did not realise that so many jumbos were flying domestics. Will they do all their aircraft ie: classics etc or just the 400s. While the aircraft are in being installed with the PTVs will they do the new sleeper seats? Many thanks for your help anyway matey.

I can't see the classics being done - they are due for retirement fairly soon. The 743's, not too sure, likewise with the A330's destined for international ops. QF are removing P from some 744's to be used on some European routes - FRA, CDG, FCO, these will replace the 743's and 744's currently operating these routes, and enabling the 742's to be retired and the 743's to go to Asian routes, so I can't see the 743's getting the PTV's.

Of course, the A380 will have it when deliveries start in six years.

As for only having one done, I flew on VH-OJC in 2/02 on QF9, in Y from MEL to SIN and in J from SIN to LHR. The new IFE beats BA's hands down, games in Y (BA only has games in J and P), individual phones. This was the third aircraft to be released, and the first to appear in the new seat fabrics - it was actually quite stylish, much better than the old colours.

yes the 743s are getting PTVs they will come when the 743 gets the cabin refurb sometime next year (?). Have heard that the 330s will only get the flip down monitors like the 73H as they will be mainly used for domestics, Hope what i have heard is wrong.

BTW. Has Wunulla had the cabin refurb yet? or will she be the one to introduce the cocoon seat? She introduced the dreamtime didnt she?

Thanks V-Jet, I had forgotten, but I don't go to court. I am not a litigation lawyer. I had recently been dealing with a couple of QF's in-house lawyers though. No comment there.  Smile - that better?

I'm not sure that this will increase the competitiveness of QF with other airlines. People don't fly QF largely because of their indifferent cabin service, not because they don't have flat beds. IMHO the current Business Class seats are quite comfy (the upgraded one).

Air_Taiwan - I flew QF J from SIN to LHR and the return sector on BA J, and found absolutely no problem with the QF crew - in fact, they were better than the BA crew. As for the seats, I agree, but then, I can't really sleep on a plane anyway, so being horizontal would not make that much of a difference.

V-Jet - I really did not ask what QF thought of us, but there seemed to be a feeling of suspicion right from the start on their part.

I also know that they kept asking for changes to the documents right up to the day of settlement, and were not able to make any decisions in a timely manner. Rather, every concept that was raised had to be approved, and re-approved, and then discussed, and then re-discussed before any kind of outcome was reached. Certainly gave me an insight into the QF decision making shambles...ooops sorry, process.  Smile

The absence of pictures with the official press release has me wondering - what airline doesn't take the opportunity to show off a prototype of its cabin even if it doesn't actually plan on introducing it for a while? Is the design that much of an eyesore?  Smile (although admittedly Qantas have always been cagey about pics with their press release - example, Yananyi Dreaming).

Oh dear, airlines like Malaysia Airlines and Air New Zealand will fall even further behind... at least MAS has PTVs in Economy though!

Just had a look at Marc Newson's website and theres a pic of one of his previous designs. Also went to BE Aerospace, and saw a few of their pics. Did they design BA's bed? Because theres a picture of it or similar on there, and I'm guessing with the QF/BA relationship they would go to the same firm. I could be wrong but. Can someone tell me how to post the pic from his website because I can't figure it out.

Thanks.
