What's Up With NW's DC-9-15?

Thu Jul 18, 2002 10:21 am

I saw Northwest's DC-9-15 on monday while I was spotting at YUL, it made me wonder if Northwest planned to keep her as long as the other 9's. Also, what routes is she operating these days?

Thanks

Interesting that they have only one -15 model, but would they have a reason to get rid of her anyways, regardless of what model she is?

I saw this bird in GPT the other day. She is a standard DC9, and I would think she would not be retired any earlier than her sisters. LONG LIVE THE DC9s

I mean she is just like any other DC9-10. Just because she is a -15 and being the only one doesn't mean she should be retired sooner than the 14s.

Besides, I happen to like the DC9-15s a hecllk of alot better. Maybe it is the number 15. wait, I take that back. I like the -21 the best. NW should have picked some of those up when they had the chance.

I don't agree about the fact that she's a standard 9. She's the only one left in NW's fleet and we don't see this plane everywhere nowadays.

That's why I thought that they would retire her earlier than the other 9's

NW has about 10 DC-9-10s left in the fleet. They are used out of all three hubs in various city pairs. You can find them out of GPT, MBS, BHM, PIT, STL, CMH, OMA, CLT, DLH, IND, FWA, CLE, SDF, LAN, MKE, MCI, ABE. I'm sure there are other cities as well these were cities that MEM crews fly the -10 to.

About 10 left? Are you sure? I thought that N9348 was the only one left.

I'm positive we have more than one. There are way too many city pairs served by that series of 9 for one aircraft to cover. There has to be more than one aircraft because a DC-9-10 is operated on different city pairs on the same days at the same times.

For example, on August 4:

NW1564 MEM-BNA DEP 1715 ARR 1814
NW1423 BNA-MEM DEP 1910 ARR 2006

NW975 MEM-STL DEP 1700 ARR 1823
NW976 STL-MEM DEP 1905 ARR 2016

NW542 DTW-ABE DEP 1732 ARR 1856

NW294 DTW-FWA DEP 1700 ARR 1649

This series of DC-9 is in several trips from the crew bid package for August so there is more than one left.

You will find the -10 series all over the system, usually on equipment subs to lower capacity planes. Last year I had N930RC turn up twice on last minute substitutions, once on BUF-DTW in February and once on ATL-MEM in April. It's really annoying to find the "baby 9" in an unplanned sub because they have 2 less First Class seats than the -30s and -50s, and also no forward lavatory. Very annoying to have to walk the entire length of the plane from row 2 just to take a pee.

There are two varients of the DC-9-10 series. -14's and -15's. The visual differences between the two are; the -14 has one overwing emergency exit on each side and the -15 has two. I believe that most, if not all, -15's were actually -15F's so there will be a big upper deck cargo door on the left side of the airplane. The DC-9-10 series are tiny DC-9's with no leading edge slats; the DC-9-20 series are tiny DC-9's with leading edge slats.

NO!!!.. The DC9-15 does not have 2 Emergency Exits. The DC9-15RC HAD 2 Emergency Exits, but when Northwest got these, they converted it to just one Emergency Exit.

NW's DC9-10s were supposed to be retired by now, I think, but do remain in service. NW has revised its plans several times with respect to the DC9-10s and 727-200s, changing the dates of retirement of the type several times.

The good old "baby 9'er" .. its a stupid looking aircraft, and real old. Pilots at NWA keep telling me how they hate flying it...

I'm still kicking myself for not getting a picture of N9348 (the -15) when it was an equipment substitution into MSY a couple of months ago. The -10 series aircraft are the best looking aircraft Northwest has.

Thank goodness Midwest Express still runs -10's in here.
