I've heard that quite certainly Finnair will add a 5th MD11 a/c to its fleet this autumn or next spring, as well as add an 8th weekly flight to BKK and considering to re-open its flights to Osaka. Has anyone heard about it?
Additionally according to new info all DC9 aircraft will be retired before MD-80s...

It has not yet been decided, most possibly it will be one of the newest MD-11s produced, likely Swiss etc...

I doubt that they would get a SWISS aircraft since they are PW4000 powered while Finnair use General Electric CF-6's on their MD-11.

This is interesting news indeed. Per Bill Harms' website, there are 3 GE-powered MD-11s in storage at Victorville. Perhaps Finnair is picking up one of these. It's good to see the passenger version of the MD-11 still around, instead of having all of them converted into freighters. Now if only Delta would pick up another MD-11.....

Once of the 3 GE-powered MD-11s at Victorville is a former VARIG ship that is destined for freighter conversion for UPS. So it's down to two CF6-80C2 ships, formerly of CityBird. It'll probably be one of these two.

The CityBird aircraft are fairly new. One built in 1996 and the other in 1998 and they have no takers so I agree with AKelley728 it is most likely they will take on of them.

I know Finnair has been looking for 5th MD-11 since spring. Even the ex-citybird MD-11 visited Helsinki, but Finnair wasn't very happy with it.

Since AY has introduced a fairly sizeable 32X fleet, one would have thought it might be looking at the 330s to replace MD11s; the 332, being smaller, but with excellent range, would allow it to add frequencies and maybe take out the BKK stop on flights to SIN and HKG.
What's the long term plan; presumably the new M11 will be leased for a relatively short period and then, all going well, sold to a cargo operator?

Finnair announced its intentions to serve Kuala Lumpur earlier and could this be a reason why Finnair needs a new MD-11?

I think when it becomes time for Finnair to replace the MD-11's which wont be for a while the best bet would be the A345. That would fit perectly with the Asian cities they serve. One question though. Does Finnair still serve Chicago? The A345 would not be a good plane for New York or Chicago so it might be a combination of the A345 and the A333.

I can't even remember if Finnair ever flew to Chicago?? In the 80s maybe or earlier,they haven't got any other American routes than New York in their regular network.I believe when the time comes for the MD11 to retire from the Finnair fleet which won't happen in this decade,they will go Airbus almost for sure..

Kaitak, I think you are right. I think this is just a short term plan. Finnair's flights to Far East are doing well and they just needed an additional aircraft. And they have said that already in spring. Perhaps they will tell it officially on 22 August when they publish their Interim Report Q2.

I don't think Finnair is looking for replacing MD-11 very soon. They are happy with their MD-11's and it can take more cargo than A330/A340.

As Jormy said, a passenger MD-11 can carry more freight than an A332/A333.
And freight is quite a good business for them on at least their flights to BKK.
Finnair has never served Chicago, currently they are only serving New York, and the flights aren't that profitable.
They have previously served at least SFO, SEA and LAX.

Long-term I would think the A330-200 would be the best aircraft for Finnair, since it is a mid-size carrier. It has range enough to do HEL-SIN non-stop, which probably would be the longest route Finnair would contemplate flying in the future.
BTW, will Kuala Lumpur be server by a stop over in BKK, like HKG and SIN is?

They used to serve MIA and SFO as recent as 1998. With the AA cooperation and Miami's ethnic ties with Finland, I would not be surprised to see them back in MIA in the next few years.

I don't know a lot about engine types etc., but I find one of the ex-CTB aircrafts more likely.
In which condition are those aircrafts? Don't forget that they are already grounded for almost one year!

Perhaps these extra 2 frequencies to Bangkok may proceed to Kuala Lumpur. OdiE is right - I remember Finnair stating its intentions to start flying into Kuala Lumpur to capture some of the large Scandinavian-Malaysian market. If Finnair play their cards right they would also be an excellent competitor (AND the only European OneWorld carrier in Malaysia) for the even larger Western Europe/UK-Malaysia market.

All and all i have flown all of Finnair's current MD-11's and i think it is an exellent choice for them.
Head of Finnair, Mr Suila, is known for being careful with his fleet which i think is good.After all Finnair is doing pretty well after sept 11 happenings.
BTW just imagine what would A346 look like in the new Finnair livery...that would be a beauty...

Present reg. of the "new" MD-11 is P4-SWM, the ex CityBird a/c. Cabin will be changed to standard AY config. New reg will most likely be OH-LGE, but that is not confirmed yet.
