JAL MD-11's, 3 Down, 7 To Go........

Sat Sep 21, 2002 4:23 pm

Yep, JA8580, JA8581 and JA8585 have already been retired. The last flight of JA8580 was JL 734 from Hong Kong to Tokyo on August 25th.

Not a very bright future for passenger MD-11's.

Will those go to Fed-Ex, or will JAL keep them for cargo?

Nope, neither of the above. They are all headed for UPS.

Finnair is probably the only airline on this planet adding more MD-11s to their fleet.. Which is nice Big grin

Shouldn't JAL retire thier mush older Classic 747 and DC10-40 first before getting rid of the newer MD-11?

Simply put, there's currently a much greater demand for used MD-11's for cargo conversion than for classic 747's or DC-10's.

Also, Boeing offered/agreed to take JAL's 10 MD-11's for a recent order for 8 772's and 3 763's.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

There is no much alternative uses of classic 747 and DC10. If they are retired, they would be simply crap. In contrast, MD11 can be retrofited into freighters, and can continuously produce benefits to the industry.
