Cost Of A Brand New Jet?

Wed Oct 09, 2002 1:51 am

Does anyone now roughly the costs of a brand new passenger jet? I read in the Bangkok Post some time ago that CX had acquired some A330's at around $30mil and some 777's at $70mil. Now, I am not even sure about my own opinion as to which is a superior product, but what could account for such a difference in cost on such a similar aircraft?? Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Well, you would have to take into account the condition of the aircraft, including how many hours they had, what their operating history is, etc etc, not to mention any discounts given. Of course, the the history of a brand new aircraft is negligible, if that answers your question.

As for getting brand new A330s at $30 million a piece, and 777s at $70 million, I would suspect those figures are incorrect - even with the discounting that goes on, that is practically giving them away.

Current list price of an A330 is US$125 million - so I seriously doubt the claim of US$30m!! The list for a B777 is over US$150m, so the same applies there. At best, with a substantial volume discount and being a preferred customer that the manufacturers are competing over to get your business, you might get a 33% discount in the current market environment.
