Least Favorite Plane?

Sun Nov 03, 2002 11:00 am

I checked and since this topic was last addressed in June of this year, I thought it was safe to start it again  Smile
What is your least favorite airplane? Granted, we all love flying here... but if you had the choice to avoid a particular type of commercial aircraft, what type would it be?
As of right now, I'd have to say the MD80 would be on my avoid list, due to my recent Delta flights... it seemed like it was going to stall on takeoff, and it was such a bumpy flight. I'm flying on four of them within the next week and a half, and I'm dreading it. Safe plane, though.
What about you?

The 737. Don't like the way it looks (too short) and don't like any plane where seating is 3 X 3.

I never really liked the DC-9 (maybe its just because most of my flights on them have been with NWA)  Wink/being sarcastic It always reeks like arse in the cabin...

I know I'm going to be chastised for this...but, it has to be the 727. It was loud, uncomfortable, and old (these days). These are the worst planes to be stuck-on in a full flight. Unfortunatly, it always seems that when ever I fly on DL, I get stuck on one of those dinosaurs. I'm not a huge fan of vintage planes, and the fact that airlines still fly this type is pretty funny. I dont mind the 737, and I actually like the DC-9. Its just the aging 727 I have something against.

This may sound like heresy, but I really, really hate RJs. Any variety.

I refer to them as "Barbie's Dream Jet" because that's what they remind me of (if you have a daughter you will know what I am talking about). They are small, they seem to take FOREVER to get off the ground, and they don't ride particularly well when the weather is less than ideal.

i dont like many narrowbodies 757s and A32x family aircraft are ok.
737s tho, dont like them.
its one of the most boring aircraft out there, its the same shape now as it was when launched god knows how long ago for Lufthansa!
Very boring, so generic.

Probably right now, the CRJ. It seems like most airlines replaced mainline flights here with them and they are getting really dull.

I don't like the 737 or 757. I think they're both too cramped. I haven't flown on the A319/320/321 yet but I think they may be worse.

For a long time, I disliked MD-80's until American Airlines refitted them with MRTC.

Now, the plane I dislike the most is another plane in the MD-80 family - the DC 9.

Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia - the only airplane I ever got almost airsick on (due to noise and massive vibrations).
I was used to fly glider planes at that time, and I never had any problems with turbulences, g-forces and so on before.

The MD80 is my choice. Nothing wrong with the plane but I always seem to end up next to the galley (which is about in the middle). Very noisy and the F/A's often forget to turn out the light of the galley and keep on running past you. If I was a F/A I would probably also choose this plane as my least favorite.

it's so short and stubby and fat looking, and those engines don't look normal. Here are some truly ghastly looking examples i found  Sad

Sorry guys, you're all spoiled.

I can guarantee you that after flying 146s and Avro Regional Jets, the 737 is luxury. The windows on the 146, if you're sitting anywhere from row 4-14, is obscured by the engine and wing; the windows always seem dirty (and difficult to take decent photos through; okay it seems like an odd thing to hold against a plane, but it's perfectly easy on any other plane!)

. . . and the 146/RJ100 was designed as a five abreast aircraft, NOT as a six abreast, but most airlines use it in this config and it's MOST uncomfortable.

As I say, DC9/MD80s, 737/757s and A320s, sheer luxury compared with 146s.

And FBU 4EVER, what's up with the 736? Did SAS upset you? I flew on this type from OSL-ARN about 2 years ago and found it perfectly nice (although I think footrests in Y class get in the way!)

Asking for small Airliners it's the ERJ. Noisy and extremly tight. The CRJ isn't very much better :-( I love the Avros. The ride in on of them is always quiete and at least with 5 seats in a row it's enough space. I always love to fly the props.
Midsize I would offer the A320 series. Noisy and very small windows like all Airbusses. The MD80 are great, at least if you sit up front. The 737's are ok.
And for the big jets I hate the 747 as they feel too cramped. It's fun to fly 767 or 777 with the United layout. Airbusses ususlly are ok exept for the small windows. And I always try to avoid flying the Hapag Lloyd A310 with those extremly tight 9 seats in a row.

I've noticed that most of the complaints about DC-9/MD-80s and 737s have been complaints that are customer controlled (customer being the airline, not the passenger). DC-9s, 717s and MD-80s that are well maintained (such as those of my beloved now-defunct Vanguard) are not smelly and the seats are quite comfortable. I'm sure, Brianhames, that you would have loved our ergonomic seats on N130NJ. And the seats on AirTran's DC-9s are old but comfortable, at least. And I'm no fan of the 737 or 3x3 seating, but it's a sight better than my least favorite plane:

The Donier Do.328!

Cramped, noisy, and you can't stand up straight if you're over 5'8" (sorry, can't convert that one to centimeters for you European chaps). I'll take an ATR-42 or an CRJ over a Do.328 any day!

While I try to appreciate all forms of aircraft, I must state that I have a huge disaffection for the A340. It's significantly slower than all of its competition, too quiet (I love an aircraft with a steady hum to it... listening to the engines gives me a sense of comfort), and uses 4 engines (I MUCH prefer twinjets for longhaul flights.... as I'd rather be within ETOPS zones as opposed to somewhere 4+ hours in the middle of an ocean), etc. Oddly enough, I really like the A330. However, give me a 777 any day!!

While I'd never ride a Soviet-built aircraft... I have nothing against them.

ERJ14's - they're too narrow and they have a low ceiling-gimme a CRJ any day. Also,J41/31's - they suck. Too narrow and loud.

I don't care for the RJ's, but, those aside, I don't like the 767 or the Airbus Widebodies a whole lot, I don't think they are good looking, really, and are kind boring.

While I do appreciate the take-off's of the 757, I find they can become cramped at times, especially with the line-ups for the washrooms when they are located 3/4 down the aircraft. Plus the bulkhead window seat in the second cabin is horrible with that big door. Funny that its family member, the 767 is my favourite plane.

I'm not going to name aircraft in general that I don't like, as a lot of it has to do with the way the airline configures the aircraft.

1. CRJ's in general: used on routes that were operated by DC-9's and 737's 10 years ago. Small, cramped, and noisy. Paying a full Delta fare for a 2.5 hr flight and getting shitty commuter service is ludicrous.

2. Delta 767's: Flew one from Atlanta to Cincinnati. Flight was only fifty minutes, but I felt like I was going to go crazy halfway through the flight. The aircraft was waaaay too cramped. I couldn't imagine flying transcon or intl. on one of those DL 767's.

3. AA 767: 11 hour CDG-DFW flight from hell.

From what I've flown on:

DC-9-30
737-200
F-100

F100...smooth flight inflight, but on the ground the engines were 'out of sync' and the cabin was humming like a loud buzz saw. Sat at LGA for 10 mins waiting for a gate to open up.....thought my head was going to explode.

Can't stand transcon 757 flights on NW-DL etc. I feel cramped (I like how it looks, and flys though).

727s, never had a problem with them. Flew the final AA 727 departure from MIA, sat 4 rows from the back, and the noise level did not bother me (I was the only person with a whole row to myself, so I was VERY comfortable haha).

-First of all, 736 is a bad one. Very ugly, and to sensitive to turbulence. I've had to many flights on those. Now I only book MD flights.
-The A340 scares me. The take-off roll is so long that I start to suspect something is wrong
-The SAAB340 is not nice. Very loud, and not much room

About the RJ I have to disagree. I've been in row 4, and the view is ok, and with 2+2 config, is very nice. Never experienced smoother landings than in a RJ

For me, the DC9, MD80-90, and 717 types. Just don't like them. Too noisy (IMHO), too narrow, too slow. The only redeeming thing about them is I really like the external appearance with the long row of evenly spaced, uninterrupted windows.

Second place would be the 727, for similar reasons, the only reason I put it above the DC9 is the 3rd engine.

I dislike most of the 737s....they are just so common...especially at MIA...There are some really nice looking ones with great paint schemes and the 738s with blended winglets are just great! Aside from that, I'd say the 762 or 752....just boring looking aircraft to me...(notice how all are operated by AA who's hub is in MIA...guess I am just sick of them!)

Passenger comfort: Airbus A320 family with CFM56-5 engines. I've been in an Alitalia A321 with CFM56-5 engines(I-BIXT), and it was terribly noisy. But the Alitalia service and seating more than made up for it.

From a purely spotting point of view my least favourite airplane would have to be the 737- all variants. They are so common EVERYWHERE and i just don't think they look sleek/exciting doesn't matter what livery their wearing. Having said that though from a performance/paxing point of view the 737(especially the NG series) is a wonderful a/c to fly on- the 737-700/800 fly very nice and smooth. It's funny how the older jets were more interesting to look at as opposed to the newer ones. Someone above mentioned the 727 was their worst type of a/c. Although i've never flown on a 727 i think from a looks/sound point of view it is a beautiful airplane and the 737 doesn't even come close in terms of looks/style.

The Dash-8 100/200/Q400. They are the worst aircraft I have ever had to deal with. If they're leaking, feel free to get on. If they aren't, they're out of oil or hydrallic fluid. The doors (cargo) are a hassle, they fuel EXTREMELY slow, they leak, they break all the time, you can't get parts for them, and they're just plain ugly. The fokker 27/28/50 are pretty damned ugly also, but if they weren't so old and worn out, I'd probably like them better.
Being a passenger in a CRJ? Don't get me started.

Il-62.
This plane has a special, very sad place in history of Polish civil aviation. It crashed twice: in 1980 (SP-LAA, 87 people died) and in 1987 (SP-LBG, 183 people died). Both crashes were caused by the structural failure.
After the second tragedy the authority decided to retire this planes and two years later LOT received it`s first B767.

Ybacpa:

Obviously, you've never flown on a 717. If you had, you'd know that its actually very quiet in back compared to the DC-9 or MD-80. Also, the back of an MD-80 isn't any louder than the over-wing section of a 737 or Airbus (and I've been there on both of those planes!).

The DC-9, however, I can't speak to. I've only flown forward of the wing on DC-9s.

DC-10 - noisy, looked stupid IMHO. I don't like the 767 either as I find them a bit cramped compared to the A330 or the 777. I don't like the look of the A340 family but they are a nice ride.

I don't like to fly on 747-400s! LOL

I prefer smaller cabins on A310, A340, 777 or 767s...
