UA To Replace 747s With -- 707s?

Thu Nov 21, 2002 1:12 am

Many of you saw my post yesterday about TV stations using old footage of UA jetliners

https://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/968657/

Not to develop a reputation of being a media watchdog but just after I started that thread I picked up the San Francisco Chronicle and read their account of UA's recovery plan, which ends with this:

"Boyd said he expects United to use smaller aircraft, replacing jumbo Boeing 747s, for example, with smaller Boeing 707s."

Well they could probably pick up a bunch of those birds for cheap! And they might have some spare parts left over from when they used the 720 variant

never going to happen...

for a 30year old+ aircraft with thousands of flight hours; the maintenance, fuel-thirst, pollution, and insurance would be completely unacceptable. Not to mention the fact that the 707 requires a 3rd crew member while the 744 only requires 2 at the controls at any given time. Even UA is not mismanaged enough to try something like that.

Good idea, actually - they´d make tons of money just with this very website´s population...  Laugh out loud

I think they probably meant they'd replace 747 flights with 777 flights.

The Chronicle obviously made a typo. I can think we can logically assume that it should have been 777. Is it really worth having a thread over a typo?

I apologize for wasting valuable cyberspace on such a silly thread.

There are a lot of chopped up 707's at Davis-Monthan AFB in TUS. Maybe they should start their 'fleet replacement' there!!!!!!

Bring back the 727's while they're at it....

UALbrat,

No need to apologize. My comment was not directed at you per se.

Generally speaking though I wonder why people start threads about misstatements (e.g. Boeing A320) or typos by lay persons or outdated file footage on CNN. We all know that to the vast majority of people these details are not the least bit important. Given that we know it is an inadvertent mistake, why are such non-events so interesting to some?

(Typos) It's not a big deal, really.

I agree most people wouldn't know the difference, or care, I just have this major psychological problem that I will share with my fellow a.net-ers; in my past I worked for many years in the news business, and it kills me when I see things in print that I would expect a rookie copy editor to catch.

I don't mind the ancient footage on TV, that's actually quite funny to me because it's the local network TV stations' "news"casters who take themselves so damned seriously! But stories in the business sections of major metropolitan newspapers -- some readers expect those stories and the facts contained therein to be accurate since financial decisions are likely to be influenced.

I really just thought the people on this board might find it interesting how UA is covered in one of its biggest hubs -- particularly those UA employees whose futures are so tenuous!

Thanks all and I'll leave it alone for the rest of the day as some poor chump is paying me to do work...

Even though this thread is about a typo...I personally found it to interesting, and quite amusing actually. Imagine if UA seriously considered brining back 707s, just the thought is hillarious. Anyways I think this typo is relevant to the topics generally discussed here and probably amused several people. Good topic =)

Where's Travolta!?

N707JT painted up in Stars&Bars ! The 'Desperation!' tour 2003! Maybe they'll make him an honorary captain....then furlough him at the same press conference!

It could have been a typo, or it can have been something far too common - lack of aviation knowldge by the press and media. They (press) may have thought it was a 707!

Maybe Travolta will come in at the last minute and save the day. He will paint N707JT in United's Friendship colors and organize a Round the world tour to raise money. His son Jett will be the pilot. (Does anyone realize where I am going with this yet?) After the tour, they will see how much money was raised by people wanting to fly with Travolta, and UAL will pay Travolta 1/3 of the funds. Let's see. How many people do you think will actually want to sit with Jett Travolta in the cockpit of N707JT?  Big grin

In other words... IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

Bringing back 707's would give a whole new meaning to the word "Retrojet"! And if the car business is going back to retro designs-- Mini, PT Cruiser, Thunderbird, etc.-- why can't the airline business do the same???
