QF To ORD

Thu Nov 28, 2002 11:07 am

From the QF website.
Qantas launches first flights to Chicago
Sydney, 28 November 2002

Qantas today announced it would commence its first services to Chicago from Melbourne via Los Angeles three times each week from 31 March 2003.

Qantas Executive General Manager Sales and Marketing John Borghetti said these services, operated by the airline's long range 747-400 ER aircraft, would provide customers with the fastest travel time and only through-flight from Australia to Chicago.

"Qantas customers travelling on QF107 Sydney-Los Angeles services will also arrive in Los Angeles in time to connect with the Qantas Chicago flights," he said.

He said the new schedule, effective from 31 March 2003, also included three new services each week from Sydney to Los Angeles, offering convenient early morning arrivals.

Mr Borghetti said that under the new schedule Qantas would add 25 per cent capacity on the route by operating 33 services each week between Los Angeles and Australia.

"Qantas operates more services each week between Australia and North America than any other carrier. Customers travelling to Los Angeles have the option of onward Qantas services to New York three times a week and now Chicago three times a week," he said.

Perhaps it is pre-mature, but this does not look good for DFW. Should be interesting for the folks at DFW expecting to see the 'roo' at 'Big D'.

Good stuff. Wonder if these flights will operate on the days the NYC flight does not...?

PS - Besides, I will fly to Australia in late 2003 or early 2004. It would be great fly on Qantas.

Jeez, QF just dominates the aus to lax. At night times at LAX the place is just full of aussies going on the heap of QF flights that leave every night.

This will sorta compete with UA as well, since their flights terminate in Chicago.

There is nothing in the QF booking system yet so cant tell what days they are running. Route map on QF website shows up as ORD being a codeshare flight. Info will probably appear in the next few days.

It's interesting to see QF fly to secondary ports in the US from LAX. I would have thought that the codeshare deal with AA was sufficient.

Is it possible to obtain figures of QF pax travelling on AA flights from LAX to Chicago?

The JFK flights operate on WED/FRI/SUN I would guess the ORD flights would be TUE/THU/SAT. I know when they started the JFK flights AA were all for it, I don't know whether it was because it relieved space on the trans con flights or whether it also provided AA with a through aircraft service to Australia, I would assume that the same would apply with this flight.

Any idea where they will park this machine at ORD? Internationally arrive into T5... and depart from T5 also... or depart from T3 after towed... a la Iberia?

Must admit I was a bit surprized to see this! But good to see QF expanding more in the US, I read a while back that QF were still looking at DFW and ORD, hopefully we will see a SYD-AKL-DFW route launch soon.

It will be parked at and go out of K19/K16/K12 or L8, they will clear customs in LA so there is no need for the T5. Its a lot more expensive to park at T5 than T3 with AA that is why Iberia is towed to T3 to depart

I myself have not heard of this. Weird. I havent heard of Qantas starting service to ORD. However itll come up on ORDs website if they do announce ORD.

I am guessing it would arrive at T5 and go out from T3. No need for wasting a gate at T5 if its only a LAX flight.

So anyone going out to see TACA? Too bad they arrive at 12:30am hahhaha  Big thumbs up

Flyinghighboy: Chances are, that's exactly what you'll have to do, although "checking in" will probably only mean taking your boarding pass to the gate and seeing if everything's all right.

I think it's possible that Qantas may use only T3 while in Chicago, given the passengers won't go through customs, and it'd make AA-to-QF connections a lot easier..

From what I understand this is what the new QF services will be.

1)3 services a week will continue onto ORD as an extension of the QF93/94 service (much like New York is an extension of the QF107/108) no extra flights will be added to the MEL-LAX route it stays on 7xweek.

2)3 or 5 extra services will be added to the SYD-LAX route my guess is it will be the reintoduction of the old QF7/8 service.

3)The QF25/26 BNE-LAX service will continue to operate via Auckland but that may change if QF/NZ go forward with there codesharing deal.

What do you think are the chances of QF operating to more new destinations such as Dubai or Santiago?

Hope this helps

The flight details are finally out for the new Qantas services from MEL > ORD

They are effective 31 March 2003

OUTBOUND

QF 93 MON/THU/SAT

DEP MEL 1115
ARR LAX 0720
DEP LAX 0925
ARR ORD 1500

RETURN

QF 94 MON/THU/SAT

DEP ORD 1940
ARR LAX 2140
DEP LAX 2340
ARR MEL 0800 2 DAYS LATER

This compliments the current services to JFK from SYD which are

OUTBOUND

QF 107 WED/FRI/SUN

DEP SYD 1140
ARR LAX 0710
DEP LAX 0905
ARR JFK 1720

RETURN

QF 108 WED/FRI/SUN

DEP JFK 1915
ARR LAX 2205
DEP LAX 2345
ARRI SYD 0725 2 DAYS LATER

So at the stage it appears that TUE is the only day that Qantas will not have a Domestic US departure from Los Angeles.

Thanks

The large amount of underfloor cargo area available to AA will make these routes viable from the word go. As AA has no dedicated freighters this space will be valuable, plus the already mentioned incursion on United territory.
