Space Shuttle Columbia Crisis

Sat Feb 01, 2003 11:24 pm

NASA lost contact with orbiter Columbia at around 8:00 a.m. Eastern time, about 22 minutes ago. The orbiter was expected to land around 5 minutes ago (8:16). Last contact was when the shuttle was at 207,000 ft and 12,500 mph.

NASA still reports no tracking information, but a piece of video has turned up taken from Houston and showing the shuttle streaking high above; it looks as though there are multiple trails, indicating some sort of break-up of the shuttle.

That doesn't look good. Imho that were 4 different pieces flying along, each with an own trail. That looks like a comet coming down.

CNN is showing images of what they call 'multiple targets' coming down. It clearly seems to indicate the Shuttle broke up into different pieces.

Terrible news.

I am bit irked my earlier posting got deleted  Pissed

but anyway, that isn't a good sign if that is what is being reported.

I did note NASA shut down the voice portion of their audio feed almost immediately after.

Didn't want three topics of the same thing going on at the same time, sorry.
The video on CNN is not live; they keep showing the same clip. Now there are reports from Palestine (sp?), Texas of a loud impact sound.

Jean Leloup,

that has got to be the most odd name for a US city.

The footage from the control center is live - it's even a few seconds ahead of the footage on the website that was linked to earlier!

It's taken less than 40 minutes for News 24 to point out that there was an Israeli on board. Looks unlikely to be a terrorist attack though.

Witness bob Multer from Palestine (yes, spelling correct), reports seeing a 'wide band' of objects east of Palestine spiralling down toward the ground, with a very loud, intense roar, which shook his house.

For those who may not know, Palestine, TX is about 95-100 southeast of downtown Dallas.

The local TV stations here in New Orleans had advised us on the news last night to look out for the shuttle as it was scheduled to pass over us at 8:07 this morning, complete with sonic boom.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the crew and their families.  Crying

BBC news didn't say that this was a disaster.. but hinted at it.

Does anyone else think there is almost no chance of survivors? If an airliner breaks up at 50 ft and its toast. 80,000 or whatever the shuttle broke up means they will hit hard. Very hard.

Im praying for the families.

It was reported on the local Dallas, TX channel 8, WFAA, that parts of the shuttle are reported to have been found in a small town in Oklahoma.

Channel 8, the ABC-TV station has two news crews filming the event and they captured the most video.......

There is no way they could survive. It IS possible to leave the shuttle, from a poll that's extended out of the door and use parachutes to land safely. It was thanks to Challenger that this was implimented, but a. it has never been tested on an actual shuttle and b. it requires the shuttle to be under control. Unlikely in this situation.

NASA has just said that there is no possibility that it made an emergency landing.

That was foam insulation, I think, and it was from the ET. It should have had no effect on any of Columbia's systems.

777236ER - I'd have to agree, NASA estimated that it was travelling between Mach 6 and 7, so I'd imagine that even if they were able to get out of the shuttle, the rapid deceleration would have killed them anyway  Crying.

I cant help help feel that some people on here dont seem to recognize what has just happened.

THE SPACE SHUTTLE HAS CRASHED.

Everyone got upset when some of us were being to laid back when talking about Challenger. No one seems to care if you joke about Columbia. Why? This is JUST as sobering as Challenger.

FYI: Shuttle looks like it may have hit debris on launch that removed vital pieces of heat shield.

Unbelievable situation. I've been watching on CNN & saw the video, pretty grim looking situation. NBC, I guess, is also showing video, looking like from the same area only directly under its flight path. They are saying terrorism could be a factor, but I really don't think this is accurate, as a stinger couldn't reach that far up (as far as I know) & it seems unlikely.

777236ER- Apparently the piece that came off was from the wing, which could have contributed to what is going on now.

Ironic that the Challenger incident was 17 years & 4 days ago....

I hope everything turns out OK, even though its not looking too optimistic...  Sad

But it is still early on a saturday morning here.

I wonder if any of our Israeli members can clue us in to the coverage in that country.
