MEA's First A321 Delivered

Tue Feb 18, 2003 10:49 pm

A few hours ago, MEA's first A321-200 landed in Beirut International Airport after its delivery to the company by Airbus in Toulouse yesterday (Feb. 17).

MEA will recieve a total of 6 A321s till January 2004 and 3 A330-200s in April and May of this year.

The new aircraft will be replacing MEA's leased fleet of A300, A310, A320 and A321.

Hi,

Would you have any insights regarding MEA's route network expansions?

Thanks you

Hi Ciro,
As far as I know, there won't be any fleet expansion. The new aircraft will simply replace the ones in operation at present.
So don't expect any immediate or major route expansion for the moment.

Cheers.

Although MEA does not plan any significant route expansion until early 2004, they will inaugurate a weekly flight to Dusseldorf this summer. They plan to strengthen their existing services with increased frequencies and improved products in 2003.

Hi JT,
MEA has been operating two A321s on lease since 1997, F-OHMP and F-OHMQ.
The one recieved today is the first plane bought by the company in the last 30 years!
So all 6 A321s will be owned by MEA while the A330s will be on lease.

Best regards.

What is sad is that though the plane is lebanese owned, it is registred in the french registery. It would be nice to see it in the OD registery

I think the rest will be carrying OD- registrations, including the A330s.

No, i asked a MEA pilot who told me that all the 321 will be in the french registry for insurance reason.
He said:
"I'm an A321 pilot with MEA, and that is
the reason you can see photos of MEA planes taken at different locations
by me.
Our new A321-231's will be registered F-O--- and this has to do with the
financial/legal structure of the deal even if the planes were ordered by
MEA.
Leased planes can have local registrations like Emirates 777-300's
leased from ILFC and SALE with A6- reg , and owned planes can have
foreign registrations when their country of origin has some kind of
financial or legal risk (ie: Lebanon)."

I imagine that the 330's will be also registred in the f registry.

Thanks Salim for the info.

I would like to know what would happen with the A300 which currently flies mostly to the west African destinations.
If you look at MEAs flights timetable, the A330s will mainly be replacing the present A310 routes to LHR, CDG and the Gulf and it won't be possible to operate to west Africa where the round trip flight takes over 30 hours.
Can the A321 operate on that route? And will the A300 stay or will it be replaced by yet another new type?

Here's the delivery schedule for MEA's new fleet of Airbus Industrie A321:
  • A321-231 c/n 1878 F-ORME delivered
  • A321-231 c/n 1953 F-ORMF 04/03
  • A321-231 c/n 1953 F-ORMF 04/03
  • A321-231 c/n 1967 F-ORMH 05/03
  • A321-231 c/n 1977 F-ORMI 05/03
  • A321-231 c/n **** F-ORMJ 12/03

Btw, are you sure that the aircraft was delivered from TLS? A321s are manufactured at Hamburg (XFW).

Hey Frank,

Thanks a lot for the reg info. I suppose the third may be F-ORMG and might be a misprint.
Any idea about the A330 regs.

Btw, the Lebanese delegation went to TLS for the delivery ceremonies, probably they first flew there from XFW.

All the best,

OD 720, i've heard that one of the two daily flights to paris operated by mea will be operated by a321 and the other by a330. This will leave a 330 for african destinations.
The a330 will be registred as: F-OMEA, F-OMEB, F-OMEC.

Where did you get the updated timetables that have the A330s in the schedule? I'd be very curious to see it.

Also, any word if LHR / EGLL), United Kingdom">LHR will be going daily? Right now it's 5x a week on an A310.

Also, when did MEA drop Nice service?

Regards

Nice to see MEA on the forum. Are the leased aircraft going back to lessors, or are they going to use the extra aircraft to finally turn their fantastic location into profit by retiming flights to connect, and becoming a hub?

Do the A300s ever come to Europe? And will they ever cross the pond?

I got the information about 330 timetable mostly when jumpseating.
All the current leased fleet will be returned. They will keep a nine plane fleet. PThis year mea stopped losing money, and i think they will wait a bit before growing the fleet and adding new destinations.
The a300-600 come several times a week to london. All the pics of this plane in the database are taken in london.

OD720,

of course the third aircraft will be F-ORMG. Sorry for that!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I also contacted my sources at Airbus Industrie at Hamburg and the aircraft indeed was officially delivered at TLS. However, I don't know about the reason. The aircraft also didn't wear a F-WW** test registration.

I have immense respect for MEA. There is probably no airline in the world that has experienced as much turmoil as MEA in the last 30 years. They were stuck flying 707's and 720's for years after they should have been retired.

If only their new colour scheme had more colour! Is it a coincidence that the MEA script is the same font as Syrian?

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Yyz717,

Weren't both the MEA and SyrianAir liveries designed by Airbus? This could explain the similar font.

With my comment about the F-WW** registration I was referring to the fact that the French department of Airbus at Toulouse always applies a French registration to an aircraft as soon as anything is done at TLS. Normally all A319s and A321 have D-AV** registrations during the pre-delivery test phase, but if e. g. a repair is done at TLS the aircraft returns to XFW with an F-WW** registration.

I wasn't aware of this. I was assuming the 2 airlines were co-operating with each other in numerous ways which included a common font/script.
