Delta MD-11 Retirement Plan

Sat Apr 12, 2003 7:31 am

How many DL MD-11's currently remain? Does anyone know the final flight? Any info regarding the MD-11's diminishing service in the DL fleet is appreciated. Thanks.

Las I heard, there are only three left (I heard this from a DL press release two days ago). Sad...

Yeah, me too!!! This is really wanting for triple 777 to NRT flight and after get rid of them with those MD11 aircraft. I'm sure Delta will ordering more B777 the routes anytime in the future. Well, talk ya later!!

There are currently 12 still in service. Three have been stored. No date yet as to the last scheduled service.

I'm guessing the reason behind the MD-11 retirement is the 777??? Suppose it makes no sense operating a tri-jet when a twin 777 can fly even further cheaper.

I don't think Delta has ever been real happy with the MD-11, and yes it does take 3 engines to operate. When I flew thru ATL a couple of weeks ago, I saw many more than just 3 MD-11s sitting over at 'E'. Does anyone know the domestic routes the MD-11 still flies?

I wish some would stay around a little longer on the ATL-MCO route so I can see them land at MCO, I am moving to Orlando and will be living in the flight path of MCO's east runway that Delta often uses.

On my way through Atlanta on Wednesday I saw at leats five that were operating.

Domestically they operate ATL-MCO and ATL-LAX through the end of the month, roughly. I am not sure of the exact ending date, but they are not operating domestically after April 30.

As a side note. I found the MD-11 the most comfortable airfcraft in Delta's fleet.

I was just on an MD11 Sunday from ATL-MCO. I saw 4 lined up at E concourse, and another 3 outside the hangers. MCO loses MD11 service after 31APR. Wasn't the plan to only have 3 left by the end of the year (or end of summer)?

Fortunetely, I barely make the deadline for seeing them domestically, as I will see one late Thursday night at MCO, and one the next week while in transit. I only have N810DE in my logbook at this time, so I will be happy to see two more before they are retired.

As for the CRAF service, I have seen a lot of MD-11s on these routes of late by browsing ACARS.

Actually DC-10 Levo- I flew on N801DE and N808DE only 3 weeks ago, so they're also still flying. N813DE was parked next to us for one flight, and it does look good in that c/s!

CRAF=Civil Reserve Air Fleet. It is a program where the U.S. military can utilize civilian aircraft to transport personal and materials around the world whenever needed. The airlines don't have to participate in the program but they probably receive a nice financial incentive to do so. I think CRAF has only been activated twice, once during Desert Shield/Storm and right now.

I can confirm that it has been used during both Gulf War I and II. However, I know a Vietnam vet and he told me that he was on either a 707 or 880 when he was shipped out in the late 1960s. Go figure...

There are four components to CRAF...long-haul and short-haul (with freighters having one component, the commercials making up the other half). Right now, only the long-haul commericials are being used, so short and long-haul cargo and short-haul passenger jets are not in service. I believe that AA, UA, US, DL, CO, NW, World, ATA, Omni, and others are all contributing planes right now.

Delta MD-11

Sun Apr 13, 2003 10:39 pm

Damn I am going to miss seeing the MD-11 barely at MCO since I am moving to Orlando on May 3.

So what will they be replaced with? More 767-400s or 777-200s?

Wasn't N813DE involved in a ramp accident where it got damaged quite a bit? Is it back in service now?
Those MD-11s are great, just went on N814DE from MCO-ATL a while back. I'll miss them, but I'm looking forward to going on a 767-400 or a 777.

So, will the MD11 still be in service ATL-FCO in September/October? I'm planning a trip to Italy around that time and hoping it will be an MD-11 or 777, I don't like the Bus Elite seats on the 767s...

Fanoftristars, don't count on an MD-11. I believe by then, the only MD-11s planned on still being in service are three that will be used for the ATL-NRT services. Also, I am flying ATL-FCO on July 6 and MXP-ATL on July 18 on DL. ATL-FCO is planned as a 772 now.

I was on the WOA flight that left Saturday night out of LAX. After a 24 hour delay and an a/c swap, we finally left for Japan! Its was great for me though! More layover time in L.A to see friends! We are getting 3 of Delta's MD-11s. One is already painted and flying! We had a quiz on it. They painted it in our colors but the insides are just like a Delta MD-11. If anyone is ever interested in World Airways, we are (supposedly) starting service from LAS-HNL six days a week for a travel group. AND there are rumors that WOA wants to get 4 757s for more domestic charters and our Carribean stuff. Anyway, take care everyone!  Smile

803 is is a piece of s**t. Good luck!!!! Lots of little gremlins in the EFIS, a leaky lav by the 3R door that caused a block of ice to form on the a/c exterior that aversly affected aerodynamics. An all around nasty little bird.
