Favorite Airport Restaurants

Tue Apr 15, 2003 8:13 am

While in DEN last week I was at one of my favorite eateries. I have been to quite a few airports, but some tend to only have the same old fast food signs spreading across their terminals. So my question is, what are some of the best eateries (that are not fast food related, ex ;McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut, etc.) that are worth paying a visit to?

Here are a couple of mine....

DEN - Que Bueno... Awesome Mexican food. I suggest the marinated steak burrito or the steak quesadilla. Located near B 52.

ORD - The Billy Goat... Remember the old episodes of Saturday Night Live with Belushi saying, "Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Pepsi, Pepsi, Chip, Chip!!?" Well this happens to be a second location of the popular eatery that is located in downtown Chicago. But you can find this smaller version in the middle of the C concourse of ORD.

The Japanese restaurant at YVR, next to the security/screening area for departing pax, is worth checking out. I go there every time I am in YVR.

FIGS at the lower concourse in one of the AA buildings.

Best baked pasta in the world and decent spotting ops.

Encounters in the Theme building at LAX is EXCELLENT. Overpriced, but really, really, REALLY good. (And I'm a foodie!). Fun, Austin Powers-type decor, excellent food, and views that make you want to slap yo mamma. Lunch is cheaper than dinner, and they give employees of most airlines discounts. Truly worth going through LAX!!!!

One of my favorite places to eat at an airport is "Air Delica" in Osaka/Kansai. There's some good soba and sandwiches there. Since it's in the International Gates area near the wing shuttle stop, it has a great view of the ramp and runway.

I also enjoy eating at the Royal Cafe in Okinawa/Naha domestic terminal, great breakfast and a good view of the runway.

I've never really eaten at an airport before. But once at JFK in the TWA terminal, before my Sun Country to MSP flight, I went to Paris Cafe on the upper level. They serve snack foods, it was fun! You overlooked all the people entering and exiting the building, and you had a great view of the tarmac with loads of sweet ass airlines!

Well it isn't "technically" at the airport, but at LAX you've got the Proud Bird which is right next to the south runway arrivals if they are arriving from the East. Great views of the planes and an open air courtyard with tons of old military planes to view, also !!

I also remember at the "old" Stapleton Airport, there was an employee's cafeteria on the ground floor/ramp area of DEN. What great food and at very low prices, you just had to know about it more or less. I don't think you even had to show your ID card to get the meals.

Try "The Flying Conch" at the Key West airport. Some windows have views towards the runway and the ramp. You can have conch chowder, conch fritters, and key lime pie while you wait for your flight off the island.

Terminal C at EWR belongs to CO, the letter from former President Bush hangs in the front window. It's concourse C-1.

Mirrodie:

Figs is in the LGA Central Terminal in the "new" shopping area downstairs. There are some nice view of the tarmac and some very good food. Figs serves gourmet food that has been highly acclaimed.

Acme Oyster House and New Orleans Legends, located at MSY....good, good New Orleans cooking...can't beat it! Legends actually has a guest chef from famous New Orleans restaurants creating the menu for the month.

The good soul food place at Hartsfield is really good too..it's in the foodcourt in Terminal B I think.

CK's Restaurant at TPA Airport Marriott (the place even survived the previous owners (Host) selling out to Marriott). A revolving roof-top place that takes 1 hour to make one revolution. On summer evenings, you get some spectacular sunset views over Tampa Bay, and some great views of airplanes too! The best of all worlds!  Big thumbs up  Big thumbs up (Yes, TWO big thumbs up!)

MSY does have great airport food, not to be overlooked would be the BTR airport which has a really good restraunt as well. before the renovation, they made the finest breakfast in the country downstairs, i used to go to eat there as a kid and i am not kidding.

The restaurants on the level of the Panorama Terasse in AMS are pretty good, and the view isn't bad either.

Nothing like eating a piece of Dutch Apple pie and looking at the planes go by.

There used to be a great restaurant at the end of the runway at Kuala Lumpur's old Subang Airport. It was always crowded with spotters and the food was superb (initially). They used to do a special Crab dish with SriLankan crabs and was only on the menu when AirLanka flew in. We used to send people off and then head down to the restaurant - eat outdoors and those thundering TriStars, Airbuses would taxi down and turn right just about in front of your table and start their roll.

It was also a great welcome to KL as you landed and turned on to the taxiway - you'd often see diners waving to you.

In fact, you can see the row of restaurants at the bottom left of this pic just by the start of Runway 15.

"La Carreta" by the D concourse in MIA is really good. They serve Cuban food. Their rice and beans are a staple food for poor flight attendants.

No FLYING MACHINE, the Chili's at ATL

Its located on the only second floor of the concourses that I am aware of. THe waiting hall has windows where you can see action between the B-A concourses and planes taking of and landing on the northern runways. Food is good and always worth the stop. (expecially if you have a voucher from the airlines like we did, since our flight was canceled to Lynchburg Big grin )

The food court at PDX is great. There are chains (Panda Express and Wendys) but I think the best would have to be Macheezmo Mouse or the pizza place. The pizza place has 50 draft beers and a seafood pizza. There are other good places for spotting away from PDX also: Saltys (at the end of 10R/L) and McMinimins and Beaches each have decks facing the river and great views of a/c, too!
The only other good food I have had was the garbanzo soup at CAVU Cafe BFI and the potato skins at LWS.

GO CANUCKS!!
You bet I'm pumped!!! I just had a green tea!!!

Berghoff's in Terminal 1 Concourse C of ORD. The sandwhiches there are awesome. Another good sandwich place on the same concourse is Zoot's.

Last time I flew through PHL, I stopped at Sky Asian Bistro in the US Airways terminal (forgot which concourse). It was pretty good, definitely beats fast food.

I liked that restaurant at CGN, which can be found right next to the entrance door to the obs deck. Last time I was there, I took quite a few things from the lunch-buffet, and it was excellent... I'd recommend this to everyone there!

The cafeteria at Brussels. Not because of the food though, but because the dining area is on the 3rd or 4th floor and has a spectacular view of the field with it's huge floor to ceiling, wall to wall window.
