How Do You Pronounce "eva Air"?

Wed Apr 16, 2003 10:03 pm

I realized that from the new video on http://www.evaair.com on their brand new look they pronounced themselves "yee-vee-aye-Air" ("EVA" letter by letter) and also in the B777-300ER launch, Allan Mullaly also pronounced that way.

But myself and everyone that I have come across pronounced it "Yee-Var" Air. Like "EVA" as a whole word.

So how do you pronouce it? and how do other people pronounce it?

The Mandarin version is much more 'gracious'.  Big thumbs up Literal translation as "Long Glory" (?)

I'm with TWFirst, as I have an Aunt Eva. Although since the companies own promo material pronounces it "E" "V" "A" with a full stop between letters I guess I'll have to change.  Sad

I knew someone who worked for them- the correct answer is letter by letter... E, V, A, Air. Apparently head office does not like the company referred to as "eva air".

I'm with the "Eva" (ee-vah) people, not least because I think it would make a great ad for their French market. "Y va" or more correctly, "on y va" means "go there" or "let's go".

Incidentally, EVA's first A330 (and the 555th A330/340) is already built and should be delivered within the next few weeks. We should soon see a photo of it.

I've worked on EVA A/C, with EVA personnel, and flown on EVA. It is in fact pronounced letter for letter as in E V A Air. They really don't like it when its called EhVuh or anything similar. I was scolded for pronouncing it the other way.

I remembered hearing the boarding call for an EVA Air flight in KIX and they pronounced it letter by letter so that's how I say it.

While it's commonly pronounced "Eve- Ah" among spotters, the correct use of the acronym is to say each letter: E-V-A Airways, for Evergreen Aviation-and-Technology Airways

While awaiting a QF flight from Brisbane, BNE, at the next gate an EVA Air MD-11 flight was announcing boarding for Taipei. I too was suprised when the gate agents announced the airline as
E. V. A. Air.

I think the correct pronunciation is E-V-A Air.

I guess thats why they write "EVA Air" instead of "Eva Air."

I'm pretty much used to saying "E-V-A Air" but sometimes no one knows which airline I'm talking about. Haha.

Ee-vah Air sounds much better than E-V-A air..

Whats wrong with the ppl at the head office in Taipei?  Big grin

But then again, they have a really nice mandarin name. (which is the name used across the whole EVERGREEN GROUP).

Guess that means we no longer can say QANTAS! Time to start pronouncing each letter!

Hey Look!! Is that the new Q.A.N.T.A.S 747-400ER?? Sure would sound funny!

Except for the small distinction of QF marketing its acronym as a single word, whereas BR does not in any official statement nor vocal release...... Insane

Impressive... now if you would learn to stop saying "Kai Tak Heart Attack" as if it were trademarked you would be on top of the game of aviation related language  Wink/being sarcastic

If I am not mistaken, the last time I was out in LAX, I heard the BR pilots call in as "Ey-va *** Heavy". Anyone who hears BR over ATC more regular then me, can you comment on that?

Their chinese name means something totally different.

It is the name of the Evergreen Group that means "Long Glory" or something like that. And that word is pronounced "Chang Yong" IIRC.

...or, you can pull the tree stump out of your ass and get a life  Big grin It's was a commonly used description for the experience and there's no harm whatsoever in utilizing the term

Sure I can... many Delta pilots from the northeast USA and Britain have an annoying habit of announcing their airline as "Delter **** (heavy)".

I have a problem with that? Nope. That correct notation for the airline in any way? Nope. Could you be more anal with this subject? Nope.

While I still call it Ee-vah because it is more flowing and sounds nicer generally, it is actually E.V.A Air if you listen to the cabin announcements.

Seeing they all do it, then I guess that's right... But to tell you the truth, I think it sounds terrible.

ConcordeBoy,
I read in an article in Airways magazine: The head of EVA Air said EVA stands for the first two letters of the evergreen group and the first letter of Airways.

Not sure though

I usually go with "eh-vah" but I'm sorta adjusting to E-V-A.

When a lot of EVA Air F/As make their English announcements, they just pronounce E-V-A Air.

I haven't flown BR in a couple of years, so I could be fuzzy, but I don't remember the annoucements being anything other than E-VAH. Mainly because prior to flying them I always figured it was A-VAH, but that's my Spanish background there.

In all the flights I had I can't recall it ever being E-V-A.

Perhaps this is a new thing post-2001?

"E. V. A." reminds me too much of "extravehicular activity". That could be fun, send people out climbing around the outside of the plane in space suits.
