A330 In BUF Today

Sun Apr 20, 2003 9:15 am

To all BUF spotters/enthusiasts:

AirTransat has been a frequent visitor to BUF this year; it's a refreshing change to see their Tristars, A310's and now A330's making an appearance.
On ocassion, one of their 757's stops in. This is a welcome change from the
usual DC9/A320/737 and the now seemingly endless parade of RJ's.

It's kind of neat to see a widebody here again. The only trade we get here is UPS A306's. A far cry from when Eastern L1011's and AA/UA DC10's ruled the roost.

The A330 is a beautiful piece of work. Loud though, very loud. Anyways, I got a good pic or two. Anybody else see it?

Regards,

F4N

Does Air Transat run any charters in Rochester? In the early '90's, Rich International used to run L-1011 charters to LAS. I don't know of other jumbo pax charters at ROC. Our only daily scheduled jumbo is two FedEx A310's, sometimes A300's. Back in the early '70s we had AA DC-10's.

Is the Air Transat flight into BUF a one-off or part of a charter series?

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Air Transat has been running seasonal service through BUF all winter (2 - 3 days per week). They are hooked in with those "all inclusive" ads we see in the Sunday travel section to Punta Cana and Cancun. It's great to hear they sent an A330 to BUF. Please post the picture if it turns out well.

The flights must be selling well since they started 2-3 years ago. I remember hearing back then that they would test the waters in Buffalo and keep providing seasonal service if demand warrants.

Jim, by the way I have not seen any Air Transat flights in or out of ROC. A couple days a week, I keep an eye on flight tracker just to see what equipment/airlines are going through WNY airports. I did notice a Laker Airlines (727) charter recently at ROC. I believe it was coming from FLL or the Bahamas. One thing I've noticed is ROC is the king of 727 cargo traffic.

We get all sorts of cargo 727s at ROC, which will be especially enjoyable now that there aren't scheduled pax 727s anymore. Emery (or its contractors), DHL, and FedEx fly them in more or less daily. Burlington used to fly them or DC-8's in daily for years, I haven't seen one in a few visits.

zrb2:

How do you track equipment in and out of BUF? I often get a glimpse of ships passing through that I don't get a chance to follow up on; i.e., Arrow Air 727.

Please advise.

F4N- I look at Fboweb.com. It's a subscription service but it does give you all flight plans filed (not just flights in the air) for any airport including small general aviation airports like KGAI right near my house in Maryland.

Keep us posted on what's going on up there, including the runway 14/32 extension. My next trip into BUF is the 2nd week in May on Southwest. Hopefully I can see something interesting there. I fly out a couple days later on a Continental ERJ to CLE and on to Orlando.

How come AA et al used to fly DC10s to Buffalo, and now it's all RJs, which are a tiny, tiny fraction of the size of a DC10? Makes no sense, I mean the DC10 era at Buffalo was in the 70s when traffic was far less than it is today. So now we're in an era where air travel is for all, but the planes are little? Aargh! My head is turning inside out.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

The reason is frequency. YYZ got 6 daily AA DC-10's in 1981, now our largest AA aircraft is the 738. AA now carries more pax into YYZ than in 1981 since frequencies are so much higher.
