DC-10, I Love This Plane!

Sat May 03, 2003 4:49 pm

Every night at work, I watch two of these beauties roar out of SJC, and every time, I love that aircraft even more. What is it about this plane? Looks mean, sounds mean, it just wreaks of awesomeness!

Does anybody know much about Fed Ex's fleet of the -10's? Their tail numbers range from somthing like N68058 to N316FE...or somthing like that. I've been wondering if their planes with the tail numbers NOT ending with FE once belonged to Continental, since CO's tails don't end in letters. Any info?

Yes the DC-10 truly is a beautiful airplane. There's just something about tri-jets that looks awesome. I don't think there are tri-jets that don't look sweet- the DC-10,MD-11,727,L1011 all have graceful lines.

I wouldn’t be able to choose which tri-jet I prefer out of the 727, L-1011, DC-10 & MD-11 series of aircraft as they are all beautiful. There is a certain beauty to these aircraft – along with the 747 - that is unmatched.

No prizes for guessing my favourite...

The extra engine makes trijets look more distinct. Even when comparing say a DC10 with a Tristar. The engines are in roughly the same position, but the tail mountings are totally different. So you can recognise them straight away.

Positive rate, do you think the Trident looks sweet?

I like it, but a lot of people don't.

I loved the DC-10 too. I wish we still had them. They looked so cool in AA colors. I always thought the way the nose was designed made it look like a shark.

SJCguy, nice tribute. I feel much the same. When an SJC arrival lands, I'll think of you.  Smile

You're only as good as your last departure.

Hmm the Trident is the only tri-jet that i haven't actually seen in person, but i still reckon it looks good. They look pretty cool when viewed front-on.

Since this thread started with the Fed Ex DC-10, thought it appropriate to let you know of Fed Ex's plans. During the next 12 months, they will retire 7 DC-10s in favor of the MD-10 of which they will add 9. I know they look the same, but it will ensure that we see them around for many years to come! The MD-10 has the upgraded power plants as well as an MD-11 cockpit.

By March of 2004 the fleet will consist of...
727 - 123 (although the retirement rate may be increased)
DC10- 41
MD10- 33
MD11- 42
Airbus- 89

I always thought the Trident looked odd with that off-center nose wheel. Taxiing towards you, the British tri-jet looked like it might somehow fall over!

SJC guy, I'm sitting in front of 2 of them right now ... They are both MD10's now... The DC10 is the greatest aircraft ever made. (the DC8 is the second greatest) 68049 - 68056 are ex CO planes 68055 caught on fire in flight in 1996 and I'm sad to say is no longer with us... But a big piece of it was still at SMF for fire dept. Practice last time I was there... FEDEX Just gave back N305FE & N322FE to the leasesor. They are sitting at GYR right now. I hated seeing them go. 305 was an ex Lauda and 322 was a high time ex Sabena plane.
Next time try the old "dirty Sanchez" She'll love it !!!

The DC10 pretty much was the cause of Malaysia Airlines' success in its early days as the aircraft was so versatile - a role that only the 777 can fulfil today...

I also love the DC-10. I dont know exactly what it is... maybe its the unique look it has ...maybe its because you can really feel the power of the aircraft during takeoff ...maybe its all those great memories i had flying with them. Well whatever it is, this is one great aircraft!

BTW, what ever happened to the Canadian Airlines DC-10?

I used to love it when I used to spot at AMS, when an NW DC-10 was on its takeoff roll you knew about it, the earth would rumble and it just felt so solid, incredible...

I've ridden on NW DC-10's a couple of times and i have to say they were all incredible. The first commercial flight i ever took was on a NW DC-10, MSP-LAX, the pilot let me into the cockpit and let me program the planes navigation system for the flight i believe, although i could be wrong on that one. I love the sound of those engines and can never get enough of em'! Long live NW DC-10's!

I have found every DC-10 I have flown on to be extremely comfortable, even those of Laker and Air Florida with their high-density interiors. It's a very quiet plane, too.

Of the Fed Ex DC-10s, my favorite is N304FE, Alison. She's a true survivor. She was built in 1978 as part of the ONA order (sistership of the ONA 'ten that crashed), but that airline folded before she was placed into service. She flew with Icelandair, at which time she acquired her distinctive blue stripe. She was leased to Air Florida; when that excellent airline went belly-up, whe was leased to Spantax to replace their DC-10 that crashed.
