Boeing Releases New 7E7 Pic

Mon May 05, 2003 9:12 pm

http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/2003/photorelease/q2/pr_030505h.html

It looks really different now, especially the nose, cockit windows and tail.
The raked wingtips seem to curve up a bit.
Boeing considers this design a concept.

Looks indeed quite different to the A330-ish graphic they first presented. The nose somehow reminds me of the Dash-8.

From the new 7E7 picture, the plane does have a nose very akin to the Bombardier (neé de Havilland Canada) Dash 8 turboprop airliner, but I think there is something more to this new design: the possibility that the plane may sport a higher cruise speed. 0.89 Mach economic cruise speed may actually be possible, which means the plane will offer most of the advantages of the Sonic Cruiser, but at much lower development costs.

Here's a picture of that new plane:

Hope they don't choose that nose for their final verson.

In mye eyes it looks like a big rj and not a big Boeing. Where are the family realtions?

Doesn't it look similar to the Embraer 170/190?

200-250 pax, so I guess it would be little big smaller than a 330 or the size of a 767 ...

Wow...that's quite a difference from what they had been previously showing.

Blended raked wingtips, why not?

What size aircraft is the 7E7 comparable to?

"200-250 passengers in three-class configuration
250-300 passengers in two-class configuration
300-350 passengers in single-class configuration"
http://www.boeing.com/commercial/7e7/background.html

In other words: Bigger than a 757, encroaching on the 767. A few years hence, the 737NG should still be very popular - internal competition would be the last thing that Boeing wants.

Setting aside the obvious changes (nose and wingtips) the tail and pylons have been tweaked too. Other than that, what else can you change on the tried-and-trusted tube-with-wings design?

To be honest, much of the impression of sleekness comes from the paint job; not so much an engineering achievement as photoshop. What did you expect from a promotional image?  Wink/being sarcastic

Hey I was thinking that, SwissGabe! Does look like the ERJ190, I think its pretty ugly too, hope if they do actually go onto produce the 7E7 (which is doubtful at this early stage) that they will change the nose..

I imagine they will ultimately use the 776/777 Section 41 since it's readily adaptable...and capable (and of course, already designed).

Looks very nice.

Another new livery for Boeing?

Also, don't those engines look big. Very out of proportion but I suppose they would do the job.

Sigh... Why do people keep bringing up the 757? It is no 757 replacement - deal with it!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Comparing those 1/2/3 class figures with Boeing's given data on the 767-2/3/400, it becomes clear that the 7E7 will be sized between the 767-300 and 767-400. And the cabin will be almost as wider than the 767 (and A330), almost as wide as the 777.

There is nothing 757 related with the 7E7, folks! It is a pure 767 replacement.

Don’t you think it has an Airbus look to it? It's not that much different from Boeing's other aircraft but it does look very smooth & flowing.

That Boeing livery looks sweet too!

Yes, from the second picture... it does.

That raises another point: will this aircraft have a "forehead" large enough for crew rest like its bigger sister?

I think Boeing is undoubtedly the world's leader when it comes to issuing new artistic impressions of future projects...... I wonder if this is their new business strategy: Stop actually BUILDING planes and switch to simply making drawings of them.... LOL

No seriously, it looks ugly, more like an ERJ 170/190 or so....

I think it looks tight.... Kinda reminds me more of a Dornier 728 though. If the plane becomes as efficient as Boeing says it will be, it will be the new 737 selling to all the airlines, maybe even US Airways will buy a couple.

It's a nice artist's concept. Sadly, I suspect an attempt to build something with quite the elegant proportions (expecially around the tail feathers) wouldn't work very well (control surfaces would be waaaay too small)

Why does the fuselage look so bulbuous?

I thought it was to be symmetrical and perfectly circular, like the 777.

Why does it seem to bulge out towarsd the forward section?

Here are some stats lifted from Air Transport World....

"The basic version will carry 200 pax in 3 class layout. A streched variant will have 250 seats. Both will cruise at Mach0.85."

"Extended range versions are planned for both, with ranges from 7,250 to 7800nm, as well as a short range model."

"The cross section will be virtually identical to the A330, but above it will widen out to allow for seating and aisles slightly wider than the 777."

"Mach number is expected to center on 0.85 so that the 7E7 can fit seamlessly into 747/777 schedules. Gilette hints that there is a higher possibility of 0.89, but that is a tradeoff yet to be worked through."

NEW ENGINES.....

"The required thrust bracket has been confirmed at 66,000-69,000 lb and this is where some analysts see a bloodbath among GE, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls Royce. It is expected that Boeing will offer two engine choices for the 7E7 and all manufacturers view this selection as a must win."

WIDE RIDE....

"The fuselage section will be its widest-226 Inches- at shoulder level."

I thought I read somewhere that they were going to go 8 across on the 7E7 as well. So much more comfortable than the 777.

Economics are derived from predictions of 20% fuel burn savings. 8% from engines, 2% for engine/wing combinations. 3% from reduced weight. 3% from advanced aerodynamics. 4% from weight reduction from new systems architecture and less power consumed by the engines.

I like the new design. I'm glad they are leaving the 1950's era front end design that produced a lot of noise at high speeds.

This is a new family of airliner, much like the 757/767 family. Will the economics of buying a new, expensive jet with lower operating costs offset the plethora of aluminum sitting in the desert sun that can be had for a song? Airlines will need signs of a recovery in 2003 and beyond before Boeing starts to pencil in the order book.

Good looking aircraft. IMHO if Boeing builds this aircraft they will have quite a few customers for it. That's of course if Harry Stonecipher and John McDonald don't try and kill it first. God knows their approach to the commercial aircraft market does not work.

Sabenapinhead, Boeing is actually the last manufactuere between the two majors to introduce an all new airliner (the 777). And unlike Airbus or your airline, they did it with their own money, not by crying into their soup begging for mommy and daddy to spoon feed them.

Boeing also has an extensive interactive site dedicated for AOL users... a very, very expensive proposition.

It's one of the headline features on AOL for Broadband. Very snazzy looking.

It probably cost them over $100 million.

Edit: I looked at it, and its amazing. The plane at one point flies out of the interactive window across your entire screen... they spent a LOT of money to develop this.

Wingman, did you see the fourth rule when you made that post?
"No hostile language..."

Boeing is actually the last manufactuere between the two majors to introduce an all new airliner
On the other hand, what happened to the Sonic Cruiser? Or the major 747 revisions that Boeing toyed with? Sabenapilot does actually have a good point.

(the 777)
Now that you mention it, how many orders has Boeing taken for the 777 this year? http://active.boeing.com/commercial/orders/index.cfm?flash=y

And unlike Airbus or your airline, they did it with their own money, not by crying into their soup begging for mommy and daddy to spoon feed them

If you really feel the need to moan about how Airbus is subsidised (as if Boeing isn't, ho ho ho) there are some far more appropriate A versus B threads elsewhere.

Anyway, it'll be good to see the 7e7 on the market. Innovation is always welcome.  Smile

"It probably cost them over $100 million."

Are you kidding? I haven't seen it, but $100 million is so incredibly far off for a simple web presentation. Having an object moving around the screen looks cool, but every 15 year old with some knowledge about Flash can do it. Developing Boeing's whole website surely didn't cost a tenth of that. AOL advertising prices add quite a bit, but nowhere near that figure.

"Sigh... Why do people keep bringing up the 757? It is no 757 replacement - deal with it!"

Actually, I've read in a number of sources that the 7E7 was intended to replace BOTH the 757 and 767. The medium-range 210 pax variant would fill that niche nicely, despite being a twin aisle design. Boeing's tried to do this the other way around by considering the 757-300 a de facto replacement for the out of production original A market 767-200 (not too successfully, of course). It's not out of the question a wide-body could replace a narrow-body or vice versa, if gate-compatibility isn't a big problem at most airports.

Gigneil
"It is going to be a double bubble, not circular."

Initial reports said double-bubble but a recent Flight International article stated circular (which to me makes more sense). All this seemingly contradictory information means that the final configuration isn't established; I doubt it will be before the end of the year when Boeing must decide whether or not to offer it. Despite the poor current market climate, they'd better not shelve this one or their already shaky credibility in new product development will be practically out the window.
