I think this is a ferrying technique used to get a spare engine from the country of manufacture to the carriers maintenace base. It's basically just attached to the wing and of no operational use. This method was also used on 707's. I wasn't aware it was used on 747's until I saw that pic!

They're ferrying a broken / replacement engine.

EDIT: beaten to it by one second... LOL

thanks for the quick replys.

Can they do that with passengers/cargo onboard?? Doesn't the extra weight create problems with flight planning??

It is very unique!!

Yes, and not really.. They just have to figure for it in the weight and balance figures.. That's all..

The L-1011 and the DC-10 can also carry a spare podded engine.

The Air-India 747 that blew up over the Atlantic in 1985 was carrying a fifth engine. The bomb was meant to explode on the ground (another bomb killed a baggage handler in Tokyo at the same moment) but the speed restrictions when carrying a spare engine (M.78 instead of M.82) plus the extra time on the ground in Montreal fitting the engine meant the flight was still an hour out of Heathrow when the timer was triggered.

It actually does have an impact on the flight planning, i.e. longer flight time, more drag hence additional fuel, different trim, possible fuel stop on long haul flights, etc.

Who decides on which wing it is placed on?? Or is that decided by the type of aircraft used that is actually ferrying it?? The 747's all have it placed on the left wing but the Gulf air has it on the right wing??

I know that the B747 has a dedicated spot to mount the 5th pod, which is underneath the left wing. I don't know about the Tristar.

A little off the topic--how ugly does that 5th engine make the aircraft look???  Sad

This B-747 is not five but has 3 engines.

We often used 5th pods on our 747s and 4th pods on the L1011s in the good old days.
(Though once I remember BA using a Heavylift Shorts Belfast to ship an engine urgently once, that caused a stir, a big 4-prop cargo plane arriving at the base!)

I have heard of that adding an engine technique for ferrying, but I have never actually seen it. That is awesome.

Although there are no pictures available here on a.net about it, the DC-8 was also capable of a 5th pod engine under the inboard left-hand wing. The engine was fitted with a bullet fairing on front to reduce the aerodynamic drag caused by the 5th pod. Boeing tried this with the 747 5th pod but the engine being so large, the dome would collapse from the wind pressure. Hence, a 5th pod engine is installed with the fan blades removed (to reduce the gyro effect of the engine "freewheeling" in flight). On some DC-8's, when the nose bullet was not available, you could also use a cargo strap to tie the engine fan blades in place to keep them from rotating (similar to what is done when three-engine ferrying a DC-8 due to an engine failure).

Friends -

The 747s can have the wing mounts for carriage of a "5th pod" like we say in the business. It is an option offered to airline customers by Boeing, and it is located at the LH wing root, inboard of #2 engine.
xxx
Yes, airplanes with the 5th pod can also carry passengers at the same time. Carrying a spare engine imposes a reduction in cruise performance. The extra weight, installed is approximately 4,000 kg (8,500 lbs). At least that is the figure for a JT9D engine, CF-6 and RB-211 probably close to be the same.
xxx
Nowadays, airlines often have an "pool" agreement, i.e. if an engine needs to be replaced in Madrid, away from our Buenos Aires base, Iberia can loan us an engine, we ourselves would loan an engine to them if it happens to them in Buenos Aires. Changing an engine can be made in less than 8 hours... many free drinks for the passengers in the terminal, and... 1,000 times the question will be "is this airplane safe to fly...?"

B747Skipper,

thanks for the info. However i have a question in regards to the airline pool agreement--what happens if an airline like say PIA/Royal Jordanian have an engine failure in NY. At present no US carriers serve either Pakistan or Jordan--what would these airlines do in a scenario where an engine is needed?? They wouldn't hypothetically fit the pool theory--since they wouldn't ever have the chance to be able to reciprocate the favor. Would they end up using the ferry technique??

Regards

The VC-10 had a 5th pod, like the 747 on the wing, covered in a faired housing.
