Lufthansa And PIA Considering Guangzhou

Thu Jul 24, 2003 3:15 am

Both are airlines are planning to add the city to their network's respectively, for PK it will be more of a return after a 30 odd year hiatus as they flew there in the 60's. LH will ply the service from Frankfurt it will be their fourth destination in China, while PIA may route their soon to be 're-launched' Shanghai service(they were there as well in the 60's) from Karachi via Guangzhou, the city is will also be PK's fourth destination in China along with Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, technically its their fifth, they also operated to Urumqi in the 60 and early 70's.

Just before the outbreak of SARS, AF was also considering launching direct flights to Guangzhou from its hub at CDG. The route was to be operated five times a week using initially A340's, but the plan was shelved after the aforementioned event.

It should not take anyone by surprise though if AF reconsiders this new route. Their presence in China is already strong with daily flights to BJS, PVG and HKG, frequencies to which never diminished, even at the height of the epidemic.

PIA's Hong Kong service has also gone nonstop, Islamabad-Hong Kong, eliminating the stop at Bangkok, A310's ply the route. Why dosent the flight originate at Karachi? is it because of Cathay Pacific's service on the route from there? CX operate via Bangkok using both the A340/330-300.

are you sure AF has shelved plans to operate flights to Guangzhou? as far as i know, the service will commence in september. however, it would make sense if they put it on ice again...

Amir, when Jürgen Weber travelled around Asia with Thierry Antinori, he mentioned it.

Hi Amir,

PIA's news is from a press report, business community are demanding revival of the service, LH's news is from justplanes.com Smile

Lufthansa are also upgrading Beijing from the A340-300 to a 7444 staring September.

I think that it just doesn't make sense provided that both LH and PK has been operating services to HKG which is very close to Guangzhou. I wonder if they would have enough loads to sustain those flights though.
