Which United Airlines Livery Is The Best?

Thu Jul 24, 2003 8:18 am

I think the 80s - 90s livery was a lot better than the current livery.

I like the old white one the best as well, but I don't blame them for changing it. It was looking dated, I think. I'm glad they kept the United "U" though; how long has that logo been an element of their livery?

Many older employees prefer the one with the shield. Once "Fast Eddy" Carlson and his band of Westin Hotel followers took over in the early 70's, they changed the logo in '74 (I think) to look like a "W" to resemble their dream for a Westin hotels empire.... That logo will never change, because at one point, the red "U" with the reflection in blue was the 3rd most recognized corporate logo in the world.

The current livery was selected by Stephen Wolf in 1995 I believe, right after the ESOP took hold, and the idea was to create a "world class" image for United. Problem was the planes were so dark it created headaches at night.

My favorite is the white planes, with red/orange/blue stripes, and the big logo on the tail. The midnight blue needs to go!
And the winner for best actress is....REESE WITHERSPOON for 'Walk the Line'!!!!!!!!

that was thier best! the current grey one is too dull and the older white looked nasty with the orange in it.  Big thumbs up

My first love (as far as a commercial aircraft) was the United DC-10 in the late 80's early 90's c/s. White fuselage with BIG 'United' titles; big tail logo; big orange, red and blue stripes and WHITE engine cowlings. Damn, I miss those birds...  Sad

I think the current one is the best. It's very fromal and makes the airline look professional IMO.

The newest livery is the best, IMO. I hate things that remind me of the 70's, and the previous looks definitely gave me that feel - not appealing at all. Their latest look is a professional, strong image and I don't understand all the negativity about it. It looks especially good on the 777 and 744 fleets.

I definitely prefer the livery with a bit of orange in it, although I prefer the smaller titles from before the mid-1980s. See the photo below to compare:

I just wish they'd change the typeface on the fuselage. It no longer matches the rest of the United corporate identity. There were a handful of United Shuttle aircraft with the new "U N I T E D" typeface; it was a substantial improvement.

Ideally they could use a brighter colorscheme, perhaps one less complex. The current scheme is intricate (read "expensive") and is too cold in my opinion.

The graphic elements of United's printed publications, web site, and airport displays are beautiful. (The display panels were even designed by Pentagram), they just need their aircraft to match the rest of the visual identity.

Your opinion is that of many other people who follow United.

It's even the same as mine.

Does this come close to matching the current branding? The original design is nearly two years old and I refined it last year.

I personally think that the current livery SUCKS and is very dull, stodgy and boring.

I like the 80s livery the best, it seemed a lot brighter.

The new one is a night taxiway hazard, you can't see the planes at night. I also associate the new one with Bankruptcy and 9-11. It needs to be changed!!!

Yeh, this idea that the color gray somehow looks good on and conveys a "business" or serious image is a bunch of @#$!. Look at Asiana, United and Northwest (now old) schemes how dull they look with all that gray!! I'M glad that NW went with the new painted silver metallic similar to Virgin. Its not perfect and the logos on the right side point thte wrong direction somewhat diluting the compass needle effect pointing to the N.W. but at least the gray is gone. THE GRAY MUST GO!!

I like the curent livery alot. But my absolute favorite is the livery of the 1930s and 40s. It was a classic streamlined look and I wish they would have taken my advice and painted up a retrojet in those colors.

I looked for a pic of a B247 in the database. i know One was refurbished and displayed next to a 777 once or twice. Finding a pic like that is a pain.

Isnt that B 247 in United livery at the Seattle Boeing Museum? And doesn't that plane occassionally fly the airshow circuit?

Northwest's last livery wasn't that bad, at least it had bright red on top and on the tail. Northwest should have switched their grey and blue

JUST LIKE TO SAY THANKS FOR ALL YOUR OPINIONS TO MY TOPIC............I THINK ITS TIME FOR A CHANGE FOR UNITED.........BY THE WAY UA744Flagship....I THINK THAT LIVERY WOULD SUIT UNITED A LOT BETTER. THE COLORS ARE JUST SO GLOOMY AND BORING RIGHT NOW....AT LEAST THAT LIVERY WOULD BRING BACK THE HUGE "U" LOGO ON THE TAIL THAT I MISS ON THE 80s-90s LIVERY!!!

I like the current livery the best, it looks professional, and isnt a boring all-white fuselage, as many airlines nowadays tend to have. But, that one person's conceptual livery is very nice....I would love to see UAL flying under those c/s!

Futureualpilot hit it right on the head. In my opinion UAL's planes look great in their current livery. I think both UAL and USAirways have proven that a dark color scheme can look very good if done right. Dark is too boring for some of you I suppose. The all-pervasive Euro-white is not boring? How creative/exciting is it paint a plane all white and write you name on the side?

I like UA744Flagship's design as well, reminiscent of Lan Chile, which is another great livery.

While I'm at it I think we could stand to lose the unpainted "natural metal" liveries. You know who you are AA. It would look fine assuming that the planes were actually made out of all metal. All the non-metallic parts (nose radome, wing fairings, engine cowlings, vertical, etc) stick out and make the plane look like it was put together using spare parts that don't match. But that's just me...

I really like the 1980's and early 1990's livery the best because it is very happy and bright.
