Favorite Thing About The Retired 727?
I was just remebering about my last flight on a 727. It was a long time ago, on a United 727 from DEN to BOI. I was just wondering, what was your favorite thing about the almost completely retired 727? Mine was probably the power of the landings, and watching the flaps (as mentioned in an eariler thread).

Smokey takeoffs and watching their slow climbs and being able to see their smokey trails miles after takeoff

My last 727 flight was from JFK-STL on TWA. A TW 727 leaving from the old TWA terminal, those were the days!

The 727 will not be retired for many years into the future. Depending on where you live, there are many opportunities to still fly your favorite aircraft. Orlando's second airport, Sanford, has daily 727's from airlines like Pan AM, TMA, and others.
Seek them out, and happy flying!

Happy to hear that Fpdonald, thanks for correcting me. However, the problem is, I live in Boise, and if I wanted to go on a 727 flight from there, I would have to sneak aboard one of the FedEx planes

727 was an excellent aircraft. it was sturdy. good size. the third engine was expensive but nice to have. passengers loved it. crew loved it.
i hated to see them go. i remember how they smelled when a new one was delivered...like new cars. today's deliveries just smell clean. delta had one of the slowest retirement rates of the 727 fleet prior to 9/11. they were out of the fleet within a year.
i also think no plane has a nicer shape on final approach than the 727. to me it looks like some mighty bird swooping in.

I never got the chance to fly on one but i love the sleek profile of the 727. The 3 rear mounted engines and the T-Tail made for one sleek looking jet! Plus i loved the sound the engines made on takeoff- so loud from the outside, and the black smoke trails behind as she climbed away. Plus the 727 was a bit faster in the cruise than a 737/A320.

I remember the 727 as the first machine that pounded me in the chest and that I still felt miles away. It was the reason I owned hearing protection

Hehe... I remember the oil that was leaking from it's engines, usually directly on my jacket... I am talking about old PanAm's birds here in ZAG. I was sooooo sorry when they replaced them with A310.

My two favorite jets are the 727 and the 757. I recently found out the 757 was introduced to replace the 727. What a shame.

Being stuck in the last row in the back of the plane on a half-empty DAL flight. That and the fact that a 727 looks like the sports car of the airline industry!

As I recall my last flight was from TUL to DFW. I flew many thousands of miles on the 727, and I will always have many good memories of it.
I guess my favorite thing about the 727 was its looks. It just looked good. Other than a 747 taking off there is nothing I would rather see than a 727 gracefully departing the runway.

I always like to watch 727's flexible wings when the front flap slat went DEEP down with all oil streaks. I also find fasincating during right after take-off and prior landing approach, only two flap slats went down for couple of minutes then rest of the flap slats go down.
As we soon realized that retirement of 727 from US majors, we grab some seat reservations on NWA 727's (MSP-DNR), we also even took video from seat windows to grab all 727's unique wing's activity.

Sorry guys, but my favorite thing about the 727 is that it's leaving. Too loud and too smoky. I like the 757 and am glad that it evidently was created to replace the 727.

I flew on 727s more than any other plane, so it's hard to come up with just one thing. The sleek shape, the cool action on the wing, the fast climbs, etc. My first flight on this classic was in 1966 on a BWIA 727-100 from San Juan to Barbados with a stop at Antigua. I was only 10 but the flight sticks in my mind 'cause we got to get on and off by the rear airstairs! It was a thrill. My last flight on a 727 was a Mexicana 727-200 in February 2002. I flew MIA-Mexico City-Monterrey-Mexico City-MIA, all 4 segments on 727-200s. I had a feeling this was going to be the last of my 727 experiences, so I relished every moment of the 4 flights.

I think my last 727 was on UA DEN to ABQ 2 years ago? My recollection on that flight is how quiet is was up front with the engines in the back. My first time was SLC to LAX on Western back in 1975.
I will ditto the other posts - the favorite things about this plane were its sleek look with the engines in back, the steep climbs at take off, and the 100's had galleys in the middle of the plane. At airports without jetways, passengers would also board and deplane from the stair step door under the tail.

I always liked the soot trail when Delta's would curve to line up with ROC's rw 22. Also loved th roar they made @ takeoff. Sure miss pax 727's

My favorite thing about the 727? It's gone! This plane was a good 1970s model, but the airlines should have retired it in the mid-80s. Too loud, too slow, too noisy, too crowded, too expensive (with three pilots). Thank God they've gotten rid of them (I didn't think DL was EVER going to retire them)!

The 727 was what sparked my love of flying. My first flight ever was on a Delta 727 from MSY-ATL in 1980. I was a kid flying alone, and I distinctly remember the thrill of the powerful engine thrust on our take off roll, followed by a graceful ascent to the east. We passed right over downtown New Orleans and I could easily spot all the familiar landmarks: the Superdome, french quarter, and the muddy Mississippi. I was hooked!
My last 727 flight was on AA from DFW to BWI in 2001. Not as memorable, but still a pleasure.

I flew quite a few 727's but what I will always remember is from the outside:
I was spotting from the parking lot at FLL with t/o and landing on 27R.
Whenever a 727 took off, there were dozens of car alarms going off, due to the noise and tremor from those 3-holers.

The fact that it is and will remain one of the most elegant commercial jets ever (and the bestlooking Trijet).
From the passenger side I don´t remember much beside that the 727s felt old already back then in the 80s, most flights I had on them are that long ago (PanAm, United, Tunisair I can recall).
Just one story maybe, although that has nothing to do with the aircraft type itself: Around the time the Berlin Wall fell in 89 I had a girlfriend there I visited always via airplane, and Pan Am did a majority of flights at that time. One monday morning on an early flight back to Duesseldorf I was so early that we kept talking and talking until the gate closed suddenly - and I jumped over the counter to catch my flight (in 89 that was still possible without being hunted by special police...).

My first flight on the 727 was with a RG -100 CGH - GIG and the last one with AA , a -200 from Miami to Cancun.
One of the best spotting sights was to follow a 727 landing at CGH's 1400m long runway ! On a wet day much better yet !
I loved the extensive flap action during take-off and landing, the whining noise of the JTD series P & W engines and the ventral stairs before they were sealed. Cabin reminded a shorter 707 but some airlines like RG, LH, IB and VP kept a generous 34in pitch until retirement. I hope to have the opportunity to fly again in one of them

I still enjoy the sound of those old JT8 engines on freighters. They still make the ground shake on takeoff. Those engines are a derivative of some kind rocket engine.

Too loud and noisy? Well yeah, depend on the engine type. About the three pilots well... Certainly expensive, but believe me that great conversations take place in the cockpit especially on long flights

The 727 was anything but slow. Contrary to popular belief, the classic jetliners were faster than today's planes. Fuel consumtion meant less then and the common thought was that speed meant everything. Ironically, the fastest plane in the sky, the 747, was meant as a stopgap airliner until the SSTs were operational. Well, that never happened and the 747-400 is the faster airliner flying (except Concorde, of course). Just 2 weeks ago I flew from IAD-LAX at Mach .86 on a UA 744.
The 727 was fast, don't kid yourself. I would love to have a job on one, but I would need to use my head again!!! Our little Saab 2000 is far more "modern" with glass cockpit and FMS and fadec and all the other toys which keep us lazy.
